Immigration has been a difficult and rigorous process beginning in the early 1500’s when Europeans began to settle in the United States. After this, German and Irish immigrants came to America during the first wave. Most Germans moved Midwest and settled in areas like St. Louis and Cincinnati because they owned enough money to do so but Irish immigrants tended to stay on the east coast because they were poor. Later, the Homestead Act was created allowing anyone who came to the United States free land if they lived in the country for a minimum time of five years. Building the Transcontinental Railroad also influenced many immigrants to come to the United States. The third wave brought in immigrants from Latin America and East Asia as well as many others. Today, many immigrants from a variety of countries enter the United States legally but currently there are eleven million illegal immigrants in America. This is why there are many debates on the future road of immigration. One option would be for the United States to open themselves to the world and let immigrants enter freely bringing in skilled workers and earning America respect from other countries. Also, restricting immigration by not allowing immigrants into the United States will allow the country to spend money elsewhere such as education and health care along with it will decrease the drug flow and crime rates in America. A third option for the future of immigration is allowing skilled worked to immigrate into the country. This will let jobs be filled inexpensively and will help America’s economy. Lastly, America could make emigration unnecessary by giving money to help other countries rebuild and
