In the novel Lord of the Flies, the author, William Golding, portrays a story about children that are stranded on an island with no adults to take charge and leadership; therefore, the children have to create their own system of government so they can survive. Throughout the story, there is a development of characters and each character represents various personalities and specific aspects of philosophies. Jack, Simon, and Ralph are the main focus throughout the book and their way of thinking is quite different from one another resulting in constant arguments.
Ralph is the main protagonist in the story and he is the leader of the children on the island. Since Ralph was voted leader, he has the characteristics of leadership and he brings civilization and order to the story. Unlike the other boys, Jack and Simon, Ralph’s main focus is to get off the island instead of having fun. For example, Ralph tried constructing huts with Simon; meanwhile, the boys are playing and running off having fun. In the beginning of the story, Ralph’s power with the children was secure; however, towards the end, that power is being transferred to Jack. Ralph represents the …show more content…

This is shown when the children were voting for chief and Ralph was voted for chief instead of him. “Even the choir applauded, and the freckles on jack’s face disappeared under a blush of mortification.”(Golding 23). After this occurred, the Jack and Ralph always have tension between them. Because Jack is the opposite of Ralph, they always get into constant arguments about how to lead. When Jack started to gain power, the children's savagery starts to lose control and get out of hand.
