Numerous studies have been conducted to determine if teachers should be in possession of a firearm while on school properties and if this will decrease the number and magnitude of school shootings. Many scholars believe equipping teachers with firearms will be costly and end up unnecessarily endangering more students, but many scholars claim that a teacher should be the last line of defense against a school shooter. The question this paper hopes to answer is how can equipping teachers who teach grades K-12 help to prevent school shootings in the United States. This paper will attempt to answer that question by examining the perspectives of school administration and law enforcement, the impact on student’s safety and education, the …show more content…
There have been many pieces of legislation on the state level and on the congressional level regarding guns on school property. A very polarized piece of legislation was introduced in the Nevada Senate. Nevada Senate Bill 286 was created in response to several violent acts involving school shootings (Taylor, 2008). The bill would have given teachers the right to possess and carry guns on school property regardless if the school is a gun-free zone as long as the teacher possessed proper permits the bill specifically required the teacher to possess a concealed weapon permit along with a proof of completion of a specific firearm training program (“SB286,” n.d.). The bill did not pass in the Nevada Senate, but the bill did help to start the much-needed conversation about the ineffectiveness methods of the prevention of school shootings.
There are two main opinions on equipping teachers with firearms. The problem is not with the polarization of these views, but the lack of willingness to compromise. Polarization of two ideas creates an inability to solve the problem. The National Rifle Association’s National School Shield is an uncompromising policy requiring a teacher to carry or possess a firearm (Pérez, 2017). The other side though is
Some are afraid that by placing guns in school zones, more deaths and homicides will occur. That by giving administrators guns the chance of a shooting will increase tremendously, but the truth is by not placing guns on school property, we are increasing the chance of having our children and loved ones being shot. By allowing our administrators to carry guns in schools, we decrease the chance of someone walking into that school and possibly injuring or killing our students and teachers. The Superintendent David Hopkins of the Arkansas district stated “ The plan we’ve been given in the past is ‘Well, lock your doors, turn off your lights and hope for the best’ That’s not a plan”(“Guns in School” #2). Locking the doors and hoping for the best is not the best way to protect the students and teachers. Arming a number of administrators and allowing them to protect themselves and students is the best way to be
During the past few years, the number of school shootings has increased markedly. In 2013, there were 19 school shootings that occurred, taking so many innocent lives. Some may remember the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on December 14th, 2013. It was the second deadliest massacre shooting in United States history, behind the 2007 Virginia Tech Massacre. Adam Lanza shot twenty children, six staff, his mother, and himself that day. School shootings are tragic. Violence continues to increase with these shootings, as well as with violence within the schools among the students. The big question is, how do we protect ourselves from these horrible occurrences? How do teachers protect the innocent lives of their students? One common suggestion is for the teachers and administration to be armed. The premise is that if the school staff has possession of firearms this would discourage shooters, thereby making the schools much safer. However, it is my belief that teachers should not be able to have access to weapons. There should never be any type firearm on a school property, excluding trained security personnel, such as police officers and security guards.
Thirteen people were killed at Columbine High School in 1999, thirty-three died during the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007, and twenty-seven people, twenty of whom were children no older than seven, were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012 (Kirk). These name only a few of the larger and most well-known school shooting incidences. In total, 297 people have lost their lives due to school-based shootings since 1980 (Kirk). Although this number may be small in comparison to death by guns overall, these instances are completely unwarranted and it is likely that they could have been avoided or at the very least reduced. These people, college and high school students, teachers, and even children, might still be alive today if our
Since 2013, there have been over 200 school shootings in America- an average of one a week (EverytownResearch.org). Some state Legislators are considering letting individual districts and college campus to have autonomy over the type school security that is available for the students and staff. There is a state law in Texas, called The Protection of Texas Children Act, the law essentially deputizes school officials to serve as “School Marshals” who, after obtaining proper weapons license, undergoing training and passing a mental health exam, and receive training in crisis management and hostile situation, then they can have a gun in schools (Chen). In the rural area of Harrold, Texas, in the Harrold Independent School District, in 2007, they have already made ground breaking changes, they were the first school to allow teachers and staff after following the strict set of prerequisites to carry a weapon on school property. The students in the high school say they feel much safer knowing that in a small town where there is no police station that the teachers are going to protect them if the situation should arrive (Chen). Since this first school many others across the country have also made changes to allow their staff to be armed.
Due to the high number of recent school shootings and gun related discharges, 56% of Americans have come to expect these terrible incidents according to a poll conducted by CBS news. A debate has grown in the United States, whether to arm and train the public school teachers using federal funds. Under the right circumstances it has the potential to be a good idea but there are many issues with the situation. Such as the cost and accuracy of arming teachers, the abuse that could go on due to intimidation as well as the fact there is a better solution that would benefit the students of Texas better than just their teachers toting around a gun.
Over the past several years the topic of gun control has been very relevant. With the increase in crime and the school shootings, everybody felt the need to have a concealed weapons permit. They wanted to be able to protect themselves and their children. No where is safe in this day in age everybody is fighting and angry. The one place you wouldn't think to worry about, the one place you trust your children to go to being "school" is now a dangerous place. Why would someone want to target a school with innocent children you may ask? Because these people are sick. This reason being why the teachers need to be allowed to have their concealed weapons permits and be able to carry a weapon on school grounds so that they can protect our children
Over the past several years gun violence in schools has been led into many news stories. From the 1999 Columbine Shooting in Colorado to the Sandy Hook Massacre in Massachusetts, the death of students by armed intruders has ignited a debate among many Americans. At the root of this argument is the question: Should teachers and school staff be armed? Some argue schools would be safer if this occurs. The fact of the matter is; it would make schools a more dangerous place to be. Placing untrained individuals into a stressful school environment where their decisions have life or death consequences is a horrible idea.
“Are gun free zones worth having in American schools?” Through the recent struggles in policy related to mass school shootings in gun free zones, I believe that we should evaluate current policies and if need be, propose new policies, to limit or eliminate mass shootings in schools, which can and should be prevented. A common misconception when talking about ‘gun free zones’ is that Gun free zones can easily be misunderstood as meaning zero guns, but rather (usually) means that an unauthorized person cannot carry in that area (which may vary from state to state). But the issue isn’t with the misconception, but more so with the lack of safety that schools have or so we think.
According to TIME magazine, since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on December 14, 2012, there have been over 290 school shootings all around the United States. Teachers, with proper training and determination to save lives, should be able to carry a concealed handgun in schools. Teachers should be able to carry for many reasons, including protecting students until police can arrive, eliminating the amount of school shootings, and helping the students feel more safe in the school if this were to happen.
Idaho Senator Jim Guthrie is discussing the pros and cons of allowing teachers and administrators to carry guns at school. A school district in north-central Idaho decided that some of the teachers and administrators should be trained and carry a gun. “I think we should give districts the maximum flexibility to make those decisions”(Journal Staff & Wire Reports). The National rifle association's believe all action to help keep children's safety should be considered. “ When a threat occurs, a quick and timely response by law enforcement professionals is what everyone hopes for, but in these when time is clearly of the essence we strongly believe that trained school personnel can also serve a vital role”( Journal Staff & Wire Reports).
Teaching at a typical small town school in rural America one day, shots ring out. Active shooter drills come to mind, but what do we do, where do we go, how many students are present? Panic sets in. Thoughts of hiding, running, calling out for help and screaming all flash across the forefront of the mind when a person can be seen walking down the hall with a large gun in hand. No one ever thinks it could happen in a town, school, or church like ours but when the act is committed everyone feels the betrayal. Although schools from elementary to universities have adopted drills for active shooters and have routes with plans drawn up we never know how we will truly react until the time comes. Armed guards stand at the ready at most entryway doors but they are only one person and can not be everywhere always. In a recent study of active shooters for the Federal Bureau of Investigations, J.Pete Blair and Katherine W. Schweit have said, “The second most common incident locations were in educational environments…and the study results established that …these incidents involved some of the highest casualty numbers” (20). Crime is always a threat to education and defending our students nationwide should be a priority. The trouble begins with the fact that the school shootings are becoming more regular. Allowing teachers to be armed gives administration, faculty and students a more successful chance at survival against an active shooter in our education systems.
Topic: Should teachers be allowed to carry guns at school? Thesis Statement: Teachers should be allowed to carry guns on campus because it gives them the ability to defend and protect their students, it is also likely that allowing teachers to carry guns will deter school shootings. Annotated Bibliography Payne, Daniel.
In the December 25, 2012 article published in USA Today, “Editorial: Gun Lobby, Don’t Change the Subject,” author Julio Cortez talks about armed teachers and security guards as solutions to protect our children in school. He states that the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre “makes it sound so simple; hire armed guards for every school in America.” Cortez says the NRA’s attempt to introduce more weapons is a tactic to distract from the serious debate about firearms. America has just as much mental illness as other countries and the same amount of violence in the media. More guns are what make this country dangerous, but the Supreme Court has ruled twice, that the Second Amendment gives individuals the right to own a firearm. The court, however; has allowed bans on assault weapons and firearms with large magazines. That being said, since this nation isn’t about to relinquish their right to bear arms anytime soon, armed forces posted at schools seems like a good idea. Although gun-packing teacher sounds a little ludicrous. Cortez
On December 14, 2012, 26 people died from being shot by a gunman that broke into the school. Six of the people that died where teachers, and the 20 others were students. If the teachers had firearms, they could have prevented this. In a survey of 20,335 people 75% of them voted that teachers should be able to carry firearms on campus, and the other 25% voted that teachers shouldn’t be able to carry firearms on campus.
The U.S. continues to have issues with students bringing weapons to school and using those weapons against their classmates and teachers. In my opinion, I believe that teachers should be allowed to carry a weapon to protect themselves, as well as their students, from students who bring gun violence to the schools. Some school districts have limited funding and are not able to employee a law enforcement officer; therefore, teachers having the right to carry a weapon, would allow the teachers the possibility to protect and defend their school. Teachers having the right to carry a weapon would allow them the opportunity to be able to asses the violent situation more swiftly, and could allow the circumstances to have a better outcome. If teachers
