Well that time is now, because in the early 2016 Oral Roberts University made it a requirement for all freshmen’s to wear Fitbit to help maintain health fitness and personal information. The university concludes it’s a physical education course that will notify what kind of activity the students will be doing in and out of the campus. By doing so, most undergrads are tracked by how much they eat, sleep, and walk over 10,000 steps. Thanks to this technology, more and more people are participating in this program to exercise right and being well fit. Oral Roberts University thought that student would benefit them in many ways by wearing a fitbit, but that is not entirely true. One of the unfair benefit is the cost of it, this electronic wrist cost about 150$ and that expensive. Instead of the college paying for it, they are requiring all students to pay for it. It already shows that it impossible because they are already paying for textbooks and classes. Now they are requiring spending more for a mere tool to keep watch of their weight and activity. Unfortunately, the accuracy of the data displayed by the wearable is highly expected. It becomes evident either by comparing the data presented by different devices for the same activity, or by comparing some smart trackers with regular pedometers. Smart Fitness Bracelets are not accurate enough to keep unintentional movements, excessive gestures, or arms in their pockets.
“Being aware of the common exercise barriers among college-age students is critical to the understanding of the underlying reasons why some individuals are sedentary.” A college environment comes with its own unique challenges to maintaining a consistent exercise regime. There are multiple aspects of life that students are required to make time for, such as school, work, friends and family. The increasing pressure to excel academically can push students to neglect their physical fitness.
It can be assumed from these literature that these interventions are significantly effective. There is limited availability of research involving the use of smartphones and Fitbits in conjunction with the self-monitoring, goal setting, and feedback. More research on this subject is needed - specifically, including a larger participant pool with a wider age range would strengthen findings of the results. A beneficial effect of Fitbit is that it tracks any activity that is done, which lets the user know about their health and progress, if any, that is made (2). The odds of a Fitbit user caring about their general health are fairly high. With fitbit, the user knows what their heart rate is which can be helpful if a user has a heart condition in which they can not overexert themselves during an activity. Fitbit also lets the user know how well they sleep and how many hours that were slept (7). This useful information has an effect on society in which the user will have knowledge of their overall health and will know if they are unhealthy and/or have a possible abnormal heartbeat or rest period. With this information they will be able to talk to a doctor and get medical help if necessary. A harmful effect of Fitbit is that it could be inaccurate in providing the user with correct data. When someone buys any type of fitness tracker, accuracy is probably one of the top things on a list of musts this device must have. A study was conducted in which the Fitbit heart rate monitor was inaccurate by 20 beats per minute (5). The significance of Garmin Vivofit 3 is the combination of waterproof and disposable coin battery. Since users can wear the Vivofit 3 even in the shower and don’t need to take it off to charge, they can wear it all the time in one year, which means users will not miss out any activities (such as steps) or lose the band when they take it off. The reason why I think it’s significant is that I had a Fitbit band. It’s not waterproof, so I need to take it off every day before shower. Also, I need to take if off and recharge it every few days. The problem was, the Fitbit band is really difficult to snap on. I only used it for three months because it was so inconvenient. Although the majority of individuals find these tools beneficial, there are some who are concerned the use of these fitness tools can lead to obsessive and potentially harmful behavior. In a recent blog, Andria Martin discussed how the use of a Fitbit Flex triggered a relapse in her eating disorder. Andria concludedd the Fitbit Flex was ultimately detrimental to her health. Although the Fitbit Flex could lead to obsessive unhealthy behaviors, if used in moderation these fitness tools could be very beneficial for individuals who need motivation to stay on task in their health goals.

The model that would be required for the class would be a Fitbit Flex or higher. A Fitbit Flex monitors steps, distance, calories burned, and active minutes. This information then can be synced and shared to any computer or mobile device. The cost of a Fitbit Flex, as quoted by the official Fitbit website is $99.95. The cost of the Fitbit will replace the cost of a textbook used in other typical courses. Tyler KingKade, had commented that an average college student spends about $655 each year on textbooks. This can translate to $327.50 a semester and about $82 a class for a student that is enrolled in 12 credits. This being said, the cost of $100 being spent one a single class is not too expenses; it is almost average. Also, this Fitbit can be reused throughout the additional physical education courses that the student enrolls in, and the student is able to keep it for life. Fitbits are a great way to stay on track and monitor fitness progress beyond the psychical education course.
