How Slavery led to Mass Incarceration and the “#BlackLivesMatter” Movement
When slavery was created because some people felt that blacks were less than human and not worthy of rights that were given to indentured European citizens it started a way of thinking that some still feel today. This way of thinking has been taught to both sides of this ongoing battle even showing up in the Presidential election with the words of Donald Trump on February 22 in Las Vegas, NV. "Oh, I love the old days, you know? You know what I hate? There 's a guy, totally disruptive, throwing punches, we 're not allowed to punch back anymore. I love the old days. You know what they used to do to guys like that when they were in a place like this? They 'd be carried out on a stretcher, folks (Deaton, Chris).” These words made me think of a time before the Civil rights movement to treatment that blacks had to go through in the past, showing that people think the ways of the good old days are the right way to do things.
In 1619 when the Dutch ship the ‘White Lion’ landed in Jamestown Virginia carrying ten African slaves there was a change in the world that is still felt today. The beginning of slavery wasn’t what they had planned those first slaves thought that they were to receive the same rights as indentured slaves until the productivity of the farming industry in the new world.
