Sleep Dealer provides a visual example of how dark our future is shaping up to be based on current events happening in our society. We are in a period of transition, we are moving away from outdate techniques throughout various sectors in the United States, but with this transition we are also forgetting that what we do not only has an impact on us, but it has an impact on many others throughout this world. When we chose to take control of assets, when companies think it could be beneficial for them to upgrade their practices and privatizing and militarizing the countries security. The text is a waking call for us to see that we are reaching a point of no return, and that many lives on both sides of the border will be heavily impacted. We are living in an era in which war is becoming more socially acceptable, countries around the globe are waging wars and threatening to start wars over small conflicts. It almost seems like countries prefer to resolve problems using force than the use of peaceful conversations. In the text, we are told that there is a water crisis in the south west. Because of this crisis both the United States and Mexico started to lose control of their …show more content…
In the text Nericco explained “drone-pilot Rudy Ramirez, is remote-piloting a next-generation drone to Memo’s home” (Nericco, 50). These drones are not only protecting cities in the United States, these drones were used to guard the nation’s border as well as the public water being stole from Mexico. According to Riviera, these drones were used for security reasons, they can take out any targets that are trying to cross into the United States, or deemed dangerous or can be a potential threat for the American resources. We see this when a drone pilot was given the order of destroying the house where Memo lived, the reason for this action was because Memo and his family were considered as
However in order to secure their supply they must engage in peaceful negotiations as violence would only jeapordise their share of the supply. Thus the potential for water conflict is there as tensions continue to increase between upstream and downstream nations, and perhaps overtime as the downstream nations share of the supply is further squeezed, these tensions are likely to result in conflict.
The awakening of the soul is not comparable to that of the body as one is a natural phenomenon and the other is a choice one must make each day. In the film Awakenings, directed by Penny Marshall, it is suggested through the use of Dr. Sayers fear of social interaction, his orderly life (shown by the mise-en-scene created by Penny Marshall), his first exposure to friendship, and his eventual spiritual awakening that the most profound awakening of the film is not the physical one of Leonard Lowe and the other patients of Bainbridge Hospital, but the spiritual awakening of Dr. Malcolm Sayer, who learns the importance of living life, rather than merely existing.
The factory in which Memo finds himself in is no ordinary place, it is known as a ‘Sleep Dealer’. Both the name and title of the film refer to these factories where a type of ‘virtual labor’ is performed by Mexican workers and then transmitted virtually across the militarized Mexican border to the United States. The ‘sleep’ in the title references the sleep inducing effect which the long shifts have on the factories workers as they perform various forms of virtual labor in countries they are not
Menacing spy craft... unmanned aerial vehicles... and missile laden predators. These are the images that come to mind when the word "drone" is spoken. Taken to new heights during the Global War on Terror, military drones have struck fear into the hearts of America's enemies. Now the U.S. government is starting to look inward toward its next target: the American people. Already starting along the US/Mexico border, big brother is indiscriminately watching whole neighborhoods via high tech zoom and heat imaging technology. There is even a debate in congress as to whether it is lawful for an American citizen to be killed by a missile firing drone. These actions and debates have caused legitimate concerns for the American people in regards to
The Grim Sleeper is a film documentary directing attention towards serial killer rapist. During the filming, Lonnie Franklin, a supposed serial killer with apparently over 25 known victims is still in the trial phase while a cameraman and Nick Broomfield, a “reporter” scrutinize and expose more secrets about the killings, the motivation behind the killings, and the people involved. The investigation requires the interrogation and assistance of locals to obtain the pieces of the seemingly impossible puzzle. Despite the case having plenty of information to put Lonnie away with many life sentences, he remains in multiple trials over a period of four years. The evidence against Lonnie clearly has not piled up enough, and given how long he has remained
No other film was as controlled in its production as The Big Sleep. Every aspect of the film is so precise, that the filmmakers left nothing to chance. Every set was built inside, with the exception of a few exterior shots. The Big Sleep is a very visually interesting film that uses quick and precise cutting, harsh lighting, and wonderfully framed shots.
The world is filled with injustices. The unheard are being mistreated and apparently no one wants to fight for their rights. Luckily, there are still good Samaritans who have committed their lives to help those without a voice. We have the example of Black Fish. This documentary was made to raise awareness about what is going on at Sea World and how are they mistreating the poor killing wales. Like this documentary there are several others. Another example is the documentary called “The Overnighters”. This documentary aims to raise awareness of the poor conditions in which some Americans live under. This is a great documentary and it effectively targets is audience and delivers its message across the film.
The movie Awakenings is directed by Penny Marshall in the year 1990. Given the title Awakenings, the movie was about the dream of a doctor named Dr. Malcolm Sayer portrayed by Robin Willliams, whose goal is to cure the survivors of the outbreak of Encephalitis Lethargica and was paralyzed by Parkinson’s disease for decades. Dr. Sayer treated them by a miracle drug: Levo-dopa that was able to revive them again. After these awakenings, the true problems unveil, between the benefits and the counter side effects of the drug and the patients that weren’t able to accept the reality in time they have missed. This is some of the different factors of the movie that contributed to inspire works Dr. Sayer throughout the movie, which is the purpose of this paper.
Sleep Dealer analysis Typical science fiction films are known to stray into a world that is difficult to associate with reality and its evolution. Sleep dealer, however, is an unconventional science fiction film because it incites the audience to think about issues such as immigration and labor populations. The movie depicts a dystopian future in which the US-Mexico will halt immigration militarily and technologically through the building of a wall. The film not only shows a vital relationship between Mexico and the US, it also shows how the US relates with the labor population it attains from such countries. In the end, it is notable that an exploitative character is retained between the US and the labor population.
In The Big Sleep, Chandler portrays Marlowe as the knight in shining armor. This establishes a motif of the stained glass window in General Stern wood’s home in the first chapter of the novel and is an appropriate motif in dictating Marlowe’s knightly role in the novel. The stained glass that is reflected in the novel places Marlowe in the position of the knight as it shows a knight who strives to reach a woman to set her free. The fact that he stares at the glass makes him develop the need to offer assistance. This motif is suitable because it sets the stage for what is to take place in the aftermath when Marlowe rescues Carmen. Secondly, Chandler tries to connect Marlowe with the knightly personality from the beginning of the novel that he intended to name his detective the modern knight and a brave man fighting for General Sternwood. He takes the role of the servant to Sternwood’s lord and therefore, in the knightly terms, it is sufficient to say that Marlowe is striving to find justice. Moreover, he is dedicated to rendering his services in the line of duty with much loyalty and honor despite the sexual and financial temptations that come his way. Like the ancient knights, Marlowe has deeply invested in his personal code of chivalry that contain among others, the need to overcome the sexual temptation of whatever magnitude that comes his way. Lastly, as a representation of the modern-day knight, Marlowe comes out in the novel as a tough detective and a brave individual
The article, A Dream Undone: Inside the 50-Year Campaign to Roll Back the Voting Rights Act, is similar and different from the movie, Selma, in both historical or current events. Some differences are the events that came after the establishment of the Voting Right Act in 1965 to current America and how both produce a different emotion and effect. A similar is that black and colored people have the right to vote with any discrimination.
Reasons and origins of the conflict for water are dating back in the late 40s and the Arab-Israeli conflict. More precisely, the countries involved that represent potential conflict are Israel and Syria, as well as Israel and Palestine. For example, what can be mentioned here are Israeli aspirations to keep tight control over the economically important areas. This is directly linked to the water issues and diverting the water from one to another region. Other Arab countries are strongly opposing such shift as this will increase Israel’s industrial and agricultural capacities and, consequently, will encourage further Jewish immigration to the country. There have been plans to prevent such discourse, but Israeli`s military strikes have

It was reported in the San Antonio Express News that “Border-Patrolling Drones Would Call Texas Base Home.” Lynn Brezosky reported that “U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Alan Bersin cut the ribbon for the launch of the nation’s fourth base for operating border surveillance drones.” This is important in securing the U.S.-Mexico border, which the U.S. has an approximate 1,933 mile long border with Mexico (Beaver). Brezosky also reported that “the Homeland Security budget called for two drones for Texas.” The new drones in Texas are another step towards securing the U.S. border with Mexico. On the other hand, the so called “border fence” is producing less than favorable results.
One interesting lack of correlation is also found in Mandel 's study -- that between the number of disputants and intensity of conflict. He suggests that this challenges the common notion that the more limited, in terms of number of parties involved, river disputes are easier to resolve. Another surprising lack of correlation that we seem to be finding is, somewhat counter-intuitively, that climate seems not to be a major variable in water disputes. This fact may be because water has multiple uses, but these uses vary in critical importance, depending on climatic conditions. The hydropower or transportation offered by a river in a humid climate is no less important to its riparians than is the irrigation water provided by a river in an arid zone. An important aspect of international water conflicts is how water is controlled within each of the countries involved. Whether control of the resource is vested at the national level, as in the Middle East, the state level, as in India, or at the sub-state level, as in the United States, informs the complication of international dialog. Also, where control is vested institutionally is important. In Israel, for example, the Water Commissioner for years was under the authority of the Ministry of Agriculture, whereas Jordanian control is at the ministerial level, with the Ministry of Water. These respective institutional settings can make internal
