Teen Pregnancy : Teenage Pregnancy

Teen pregnancy is an issue in United States, it is one issue that should wait until teens are married and know what they are doing with their lives. This issue came about in the early in the 1950’s – 1960’s. Teen pregnancy is a teenage girl between the ages 13-19 (girls who haven’t reached adulthood) having unwanted or wanted babies. Janet Bode once stated in her book, “Emotions run everywhere, scared, sad, disappointment and preparation for what is about to happen” (Bode 51). If we do not act now, teen pregnancy will be out the roof. Teen pregnancy needs a stop put to it no matter what, teens are still children themselves and they are still learning how to take care of themselves:

Teen pregnancy is the result of many environmental factors. When I speak about environmental factors I’m referring to the people teens surround themselves with along with their socioeconomic mobility. The most significant environmental factor contributing to teenage pregnancy are related to poverty. Did you know that teenage girls in poverty chose to give birth because they had no realistic hope for moving up in life? Not only does social status effect teens who get pregnant in poverty situations their education is interrupted also. Most teens don’t go back to even get their GED, which results in more complications when trying to get a job etc. Another factor is the people teens surround themselves with. Teens are influenced by what they watch and hear other people do which is normal because even as teens their minds and self-being is still being developed. A baby is a great responsibility that requires a lot of care and attention. Also, the cost involved is high. For example, a study conducted in Europe shows that only 15 percent of adolescent pregnancies are planned. In addition, half of all teenage pregnancies occur six months after a teenager becomes sexually active (Miller 1997). Adolescent pregnancy is considered a risk to maternal and child health, as well as a factor that contributes to the excessive growth of the population, dropout, and the perpetuation of poverty, by limiting the possibilities for personal and family development. Its causes are attributed mainly to early sexuality and lack of information and access to contraceptive methods.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) the 2011 birth rate for teens was 31.3 births per 1000 women aged 15–19, a record low for the United States. However, there are many ways to reduce the amount of teenage pregnancies (Trudeau). The United States has a problem of teenage pregnancy occurring with the most occurring in the capital Washington D.C. where there are a diverse group of teenagers (Dawani). This shows that our nation has a problem of teenage pregnancy, but the most is in a well civilized area in our nation. Studies have shown that The highest rate of teenage pregnancy in a developed country occurs in the United States with the rate of teenagers being twice as likely to give birth compared to teens in Canada and ten times as likely as teens in Switzerland showing that a diverse population has an effect on social behaviors (Dawani). Our nation needs to find ways to decrease the alarming statistic. Studies have shown there has been a decrease in teenage pregnancies.A recent article has shown the teen pregnancy rate is down nearly 40 percent and the teen birth rate has been cut by one-third since the early 1990s, but the problem is still occurring today (Dawani). Teenage pregnancy in the United States is a problem with many causes such as lack of education from parents and the education system, media influences, and the cost of contraception used and many solutions to stop the epidemic.

Teen pregnancy……what comes in mind when you hear the words “Teen Pregnancy”? Well, teen pregnancy are young female girls that become pregnant under the age of 20. A female can become pregnant from having sexual intercourse and after she have started to ovulate. Young female girls will become pregnant without even thinking about the consequences and the type of environment the baby will be in. Not because the young mother is poor or rich, but because they’re not ready to take care of another human being. Not to mention, pregnant teens are young themselves, so their also growing. There are plenty of problems that are the cause of teen pregnancy, and many of those problems can be solved.

Teenage pregnancy is an issue for a plethora of reasons. For example, there are many health risks for the mother and the baby that come along with teenage pregnancy. Although most pregnancies are accidents, this one accident can cause a complete change in the father and mother’s lives.

Teen pregnancy is something that affects over one million young teens in the United States. For some, these pregnancies are planned but 85% of these teens the pregnancy is unplanned. This can cause a lot of endless problems in the life of the teen and the newborn child. There are a lot of things that can cause an unplanned teen pregnancy, such as teens experimenting with sexual encounters at a young age. Another major cause is the lack of guidance due to guardians that are blind or do not want to believe in such activities. These causes can have devastating effects on the teen and the newborn in the household. Some effects of early pregnancy will include an unexpected rise of responsibility for the teen and can cause many health concerns for both teen and newborn child.

As teenagers (in the United States), we are peer pressured or tempted to try new things. Some teens tend to try out drugs, and alcohol. However, some are having unprotected sex in which, is leads to having babies. This is called, teenage pregnancy. This has caused the United States to create records based off of the statistics and facts given from, researchers across the United States. In order to help prevent teenage pregnancy in the United States, teenagers must understand why, having a baby now isn’t such a smart move on their part.

Another reason that the teens get pregnant is that they lack the guidance from their parent especially, when it’s a single parent. Parent are either too busy or their teen feels like they can’t talk about sex and end up with little to no information. Some parents can put a lot of restrictions to their teenager, especially girls to protect them from harm. This can lead to increased frustration, curiosity, or even feeling of not being loved from overprotection. There are more motivators to have sex today than not for early teenagers.
