The morning of December 7th 1941 is a day that will never be forgotten. It is a day to remember and a day, which will live in infamy . The Japanese navy decided to launch a surprise attack to destroy the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, because Japan wanted to stop the US pacific fleet from interfering with Japanese military activities that Japan had planned in Southeastern Asia. The Japanese thought that doing such an exercise would scare the US away from the Asia pacific region, but all it did was make things worse because shortly after, the US made Japan a major enemy during the war, and became determined to Japan at all costs. The attack on Pearl Harbor is what ultimately led to Japan’s downfall and its destruction instead of …show more content…
The attack involved Japanese bomber planes and torpedo planes blowing up battleships in the harbor so that they couldn’t be used against the Japanese. The U.S.S Arizona was sunk and the U.S.S Oklahoma was capsized. “The attack beached a total of twelve ships and severely damaged nine others. 160 U.S aircraft were destroyed and 150 other U.S aircraft were damaged.” The base was not at all prepared to fight off an attack, so the naval servicemen were almost completely defenseless.
The attack was first focused on sinking as many navy ships as possible, so the U.S.S Arizona had very high casualties. Naval servicemen sleeping in their quarters or just waking up were awoken by sounds of explosions, aircraft flying overhead, and gunfire. Many of them would have quickly hurried to their battle stations, but all they could do was use the anti-aircraft guns and cannons to shoot down Japanese planes. This proved to be futile because the planes were moving too fast, and they were deliberately bombing the ship’s guns and cannons. Many unexploded bombs pierced the deck and exploded inside the ship killing navy servicemen in their quarters. Japanese planes were also commanded to destroy any US aircraft they saw, so all the airfields which had planes parked were also bombed and destroyed.
The U.S.S Oklahoma was engulfed in flames, and many crewmembers were killed from the smoke suffocating them. There were also hospitals
The book about the day that will live in infamy did get many things right, including the damage control on all of the ships. However, I do doubt that a fighter whose mission is to sink ships would peel away from his squadron to attack a lone person. But the battleship Arizona really was sunk, like all of the other ships in the harbor. Like I said at the beginning, this book brought to life some aspects I never looked at before. Not only that, it had all of these aspects correct. There were actually two waves of bombers and fighters that attacked the harbor, and there is a Hickam air force base in on the east side of Pearl
Introduction. I chose this battle because I had been hearing about the attack on Pearl Harbor, but I did not know much about it. This paper talks about the countries that fought in this battle, where the battle was fought, what the geography was like during the battle, what the weather was like, what happened during this battle, how many casualties occurred, other things I learned about the battle, who won the battle, and how the battle was important to WWII.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered his war speech and asserted December 7, 1941 as, “a date which will live in infamy.” The United States’ naval bases stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii were struck by Japanese planes intentionally and promptly. The news of this attack on the Pearl Harbor shocked the world. It was devastating to the nation that were still in the throes of depression. Witnesses of this event painted a portrait of a nation stunned, but determined to rise again. The United States’ government had not disclosed a Pearl Harbor story to the public--that the U.S. had failed to act on advance information about a planned Japanese attack. Japan 's move against the United States was audacious enough to be considered no more than a slight possibility, although the potential for an attack had been widely discussed.
Within Five minutes of the attack U.S. military officials had started attacking back at the Japanese. (Pearl Harbor Film) We were at a disadvantage because the Japanese had destroyed many of many of our battle ships. But we were not going to let that stop us. We were not going to give up, just fight until the end. After two hours of fighting long and hard the damaged was done and the Japanese retreated. In the end we were left with 2,042 casualties and 1,247 wounded (Wikipedia) and defeated.
December 7th, 1941, was the day 2,403 Americans lost their lives and 1,200 wounded during the Japanese air raid, on Pearl Harbor. On this day, the US Navy lost almost the entire Pacific Fleet in the harbor. After the attack, all the ships were either sunk or severally damaged minus the aircraft carriers. The aircraft carriers luckily were still at sea. The total number of military personnel killed was 2,335, including 2,008 navy personnel, 109 marines, and 218 army. Added to this were 68 civilians, making the total 2403 people dead. 1,177 men alone were from the USS Arizona.
The attack on Pearl Harbor occurred on December 7, 1941 and started at 0755. A total of four bombs hit the U.S.S. Arizona. “Another plane dropped a 1,700 pound bomb on the U.S.S. Arizona. The bomb crashed through the ship’s deck and into its magazine”(Santella 27). The bomb ignited over one thousand pounds of black powder. The entire ship’s band died in the attack along with twenty-three sets of brothers. The U.S.S. Arizona was the site of almost half of the casualties at Pearl
On December 7, 1941 -- the day that will always be commemorated as “the date which will live in infamy” by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt -- the Japanese unexpectedly attacked the United States’ naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. This crippling attack caused many American casualties, and American citizens quickly became filled with fury and abhorrence; the detestation that swallowed the hearts of the American citizens was shown through President Roosevelt’s expeditious appeal to Congress to declare war against Japan. The attack on Pearl Harbor was an unforgettable day in history and directly affected the United States involvement in World War Two and the patriotism of the United States’ citizens.
Four US fighters took off but were promptly shot down. By 8:00 there were no more enemy planes in the air, and the Japaneses fighters strafed the airfields. When it was time for the level-bombing group to attack the battleships moored to the cast of Ford Island, the US antiaircraft began to fire at Japan causing dark clouds to form (most of them came from ships’ batteries). A cloud came between the bombsight and the target and caused the lead plane to miss the shot. Source L states that there was a dark red smoke that rose to 1000 meters that showed to explosion of the Battelship Arizona, over 1000 men got trapped inside as the ship sank. Commander Fuchida observed the damage and the second wave attack to see the ‘success.’ By the time the attack was over Pearl Harbour and its air bases were wrecked badly by the fierce strafing and
The Japanese lost twenty nine aircraft, sixty four men, mostly aircrew, and five miniature submarines. Another point of the Japanese strategy was to destroy the Pacific Fleet, which was a Pacific Ocean theater level component command of the United States Navy that provides naval forces to the United States Pacific Command. It carried aircrafts and was able to command from its base. “By 1900 the U.S. Navy had grown from twelfth to third largest in the world... In 1908 it began building a naval base at Pearl Harbor (Heineman 9)”
The attack on Pearl Harbor was devastating and almost everyone knows how the US responded and how many people were killed but I want to tell you about the event from the Japanese point of view in this essay. First they needed a reason to attack, some type of motive for destroying one of America’s great naval bases. For the Japanese the Pacific was an easy and tactical target due to the lack of resistance in many of the islands giving access to the U.S. and gaining territory at the same time. The only problem was Pearl Harbor, the American naval base in the pacific, so the solution was to eliminate the base before it became a factor. To many taking down Pearl Harbor is an almost impossible task especially for the Japanese; as they had to travel across the Pacific and once they got to Pearl Harbor they would be confronted by 100 ships, a few hundred planes and artillery such as AA units. But in the mind of the Japanese it was an easy attack, as they thought they had the best navy and air force in the world and
They flew and fired until they ran out of fuel, and landed in either China, Japan or the Soviet Union. The attack was symbolic and pay back for the attack on Pearl Harbor, and this hugely improved the morale and confidence around our country, due to success being publicly shown to all Americans. Several courageous soldiers are Japanese and Soviet Union Prisoners of War or died, and we thank and pray for these valiant soldiers, who died for the United States of America. I think that this attack was clever and necessary, as it showed Japan that we are strong, and we are able to fight back, and it gave hope and confidence to our
The USS Arizona was part of the Pennsylvania-class battleships, which were some of the most powerful warships. The USS Arizona had 1,177 crew members on it. The Japanese bombers dropped four bombs before the USS Arizona had sunk. The whole crew
There were 3 different waves that were going to be attacking. First wave was to attack the harbor, second wave was to attack the airfields, and the third wave was supposed to hit anything left behind but never launched. Americans had a radar system that was brand new and they were trying to understand how to use it. Therefore when a blip popped up on the radar they thought it was a malfunction because the mountains in Hawaii usually messed with the radio waves or outright blocked said wave. So the japanese used that to their advantage and sent the bombers through the mountains.
The attack by the Japanese on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii was during the time of World War II. The Japanese attack was a surprise to the U. S. because many Americans had been killed and injured. The Japan’s military hoped to cripple the United States Pacific Fleet in order to
The American naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii was attacked by the Japanese navy and air force because of the economic sanctions and embargos placed on Japan by the United States government. The tension between the United States and Japan were very high. Japan had forcefully expanded into China
