According to the World Health Organization, tobacco kills almost six million people each year. As a result, many new products have been brought forward to serve as healthy alternatives; the highest in demand being the electronic cigarette or e-cigarette. E-cigarettes are battery-powered devices that create a vapor mist from a heated liquid solution when the user inhales on a mouthpiece (Wagaman). As of their creation in 2006, a growing number of people are taking up “vaping” instead of smoking, resulting in an industry worth $2.7 billion worldwide (Senthilingam). Although the product is healthier than the traditional tobacco cigarette, there are many defects that keep it from being the healthiest alternative. Due to its negative health …show more content…
In another sample tested by the FDA, diethylene glycol was present. This substance is a toxic chemical commonly found in antifreeze (Torrejon). In addition, the amount of formaldehyde contained in about ten inhalations of an e-cigarette surpassed the concentration of formaldehyde in a tobacco cigarette at one hundred micrograms to seventy-six micrograms (Yoneyama). Also detected were glyoxal and acrolein. These toxins are feared to cause inflamed bronchial tubes, coughing, irritated mucus membranes in organs, and even lead to reduction in lung functioning (Yoneyama). Lastly, A California Department of Public Health report written last year states that cancer-causing toxins can be emitted from an electronic cigarette and can hook users on nicotine (Cornwell). “Some people say they are safer than combustible cigarettes, but safer doesn’t always mean safe,” stated Dr. Otis Brawley, chief medical officer for the American Cancer Society. He and other health experts worry about the new alternative and believe that much more research is needed. Due to the staggeringly large amount of health risks tied to each device, regulations need to be heavily increased. Many are unaware of the burden the electronic cigarette bears, and restricting purchases of the product can lead to a greater improvement in the lives of countless citizens.
Not only does the product
Everyone always wants to be with the latest trend, and as many celebrities and magazine ads have pictures of vaping, electronic cigarettes have become a "trend”. People are largely unaware of the emergency risks of vaping. According to a study by Mitch Zeller he states, “I can say definitely, that nicotine is harmful to a developing teenage brain. And no teenager, no young person. should be using any tobacco or nicotine-containing products”. Unlike true cigarettes, electronic cigarettes do not have
Electronic cigarettes have been around for about a decade. No one is sure of what havoc they can cause yet because of how new they are in existence. Throughout the past years more and more issues have been arising from this product that was originally assumed to be harmless. Now we are faced with the question are they really as safe as we thought or should increase investigation to see what they are really capable of. So far researchers have discovered many issues with the electronic cigarettes and every month more and more issues begin the surface the air. From explosion to toxic material. These issues will not only affect their
The e-cigarette format, however, does not eliminate concerns regarding public and individual health risks. The World Health Organization has called for e-cigarette usage to be monitored in the same way as more conventional tobacco products,(23) the US FDA is advocating for more research,(24) and there has been a dramatic increase in analyses of the chemical, physiological, psychological and socio-cultural aspects of e-cigarettes.(2-7,9-12,14-21,24-52)
The popularity of e-cigarettes and vapes has grown exponentially within the last couple of years. These two alternatives offer a “safe” way to consume nicotine or just a substitute to regular cigarette smoking. These products omit water vapor instead of tobacco smoke, constructing it as less of a health risk. Nicotine can be added to the mixture to help quit smoking or offer a healthier option to those with nicotine dependence. There has not been widespread research on conventional e-cigarettes, in addition to data on vapes been relatively premature. These smoking devices have not be regulated by the FDA yet, but the FDA has looked into e-cigarettes and its contents (FDA, 2015). Many e-cigarettes that are thought to be free of nicotine, have
There is a new trend hitting the market known as e-cigarettes, or “vaping.” Many people believe that e-cigarettes are better than traditional cigarettes, but research shows just how unhealthy and harmful e-cigarettes are for everyone. The FDA has not yet decided if e-cigarettes should be regulated like tobacco products. E-cigarettes are marketed to help people quit smoking and live a healthier nonsmoking life. E-cigarettes are meant to help break the habit of smoking, but why are there so many “toxic chemicals” (Gilger) in the vapor? Is this new invention to help people quit smoking or just another way for tobacco companies to get richer?
Smoking is an addiction that can risk one’s health, which in turn can lead to death. As time advances, both smokers and non-smokers are beginning to understand the harm in this deadly habit because not only does it harm smokers, it can impact anyone who encounters the smoke second-hand. Since the public has become aware of the health risks induced by smoking, cessation tools such as nicotine replacement therapy are being invented to help terminate the desire to smoke. As technology improves, smoking devices like the electronic cigarette are invented and can be considered an effective cessation tool. Electronic cigarettes can deliver low doses of nicotine to ease withdrawal symptoms. Furthermore, as electronic cigarettes increase in
The addiction to tobacco, nicotine, and smoking is something the humans have embraced and battled since the early 1800’s. With more and more people falling into the habit and becoming addicted, many detrimental health effects on the body caused people to question what was going on and what was causing these negative reactions in the body. Soon enough, the healthy and “cool” cigarettes that everyone was smoking became the face of lung cancer, cardiovascular disease, birth defects, and many other deadly bodily reactions. In the early 2000’s electronic cigarettes (ECs) were developed by a Chinese pharmacist that hoped to allow smokers to maintain their nicotine addiction, but limit or end the harmful and detrimental effects of tobacco on the body, due to his father’s death of tobacco-attributable lung cancer.1 A typical EC consists of a rechargeable lithium battery, a heating tool called an atomizer, which vaporizes a humectant (typically propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, and/or polyethylene glycol 400). The humectant contains liquid nicotine. When the smoker inhales, the heating tool is activated by an airflow sensor, and the nicotine is vaporized.1 2
In the United States, manufacturers of e-cigarettes are under no law to inform people what they are actually inhaling. The unclear is one of the many traits of e-cigarettes that the American Lung Association does not like. In 2009, a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) test on a small number of e-cigarette samples found "detectable levels of known carcinogens and toxic chemicals to which users could potentially be exposed" (Jen Christensen, sec. 3). They found diethylene glycol in one cartridge at a 1% level, this being an ingredient used in antifreeze which can be toxic to humans in large quantities. After the study, the FDA banned the sale of e-cigarettes, warning e-cigarette smokers that they were inhaling toxic and harmful chemicals. However, in 2010, a court ruled that the FDA had cited no evidence to show that electronic cigarettes harmed anyone, and stores could go on selling them, becoming increasingly popular each day.
In the United States, the usage of cigarettes is slowly declining, making way for alternative forms of tobacco and nicotine sources to become popular. In the past decade, one of these cigarette alternatives has become very popular, even widely among teens, and it’s referred to as “vaping”. Vaping is the use of electronic cigarettes that replace burning paper and tobacco with flavored steam, which usually has nicotine in it (Kriegel). Since vaping hasn’t been around very long and hasn’t become popular until recently, not much is known about the effects or how harmful it could be long term. One source says, “There's also a widespread belief that e-cigarettes are safe, or at least safer than conventional tobacco products. But several studies have suggested this may not be the case,” (Fox). Although there is a very strong debate on whether e-cigarettes are a safe alternative for cigarettes, there are too many risk factors involved due to conflicting information and studies, for vaping to be deemed safe.
In conclusion, more Americans need to be aware of the dangers of e-cigs including their addictive levels of nicotine, and harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde. Thedailybeast addressed the dangerous of e-cigs to not only the user, but other in this statement ,”Outside the risk of exposure to cancer-causing agents, e-cigarettes have been shown to prove dangerous to kids.” This shows that the dangers caused by e-cigs can indirectly harm others, and is posing as a threat to the user's health and can act as a bad influence toward the youth. This is why americans need to relook at how safe e-cigarettes
“How bad is vaping compared to smoking? Should it be banned entirely? Is it more dangerous, is it better?” Are a few major questions one thinks about vaping. The mentality of nicotine addiction and toxic chemicals that lead to cancer are what concerns the public. With vaping on the high rise of popularity, the vaping industry is collectively growing bigger with more than 3500’s shops in counting and worth billions. Vaping history goes far back but just because it has a history doesn’t make it all good. Vaping dates back to the 5th century B.C. of Egypt, where they heated up herbs on hot stones to vape on. Shisha’s or heard by the name of Hookahs came 1500 years ago in India and have spread in popularity everywhere and many places in the United States just like the e-cigarette. The idea of the e-cigarettes was made 2000’s but was not heard of until the Chinese company Hon Lik introduced them in the 2000’s, becoming a big hit in the US in 2007. Even though the creator from Hon Lik Co. had good intentions for the making of e-cigarette due to his father dying of lung cancer from smoking, vaping is still a possible force of destruction. “Despite making great strides to reduce smoking, tobacco is still our biggest killer. Our region has always kept an open mind towards using electronic cigarettes as we can see the massive potential health benefits from switching” states Lisa Surtees, acting director at Fresh Smoke Free North East. If at all compared to smoking, vaping is the safer
Imagine you are laying in a hospital bed. You wake up, the first thing you see is your doctor and you hear him say, “I’m sorry, you have lung cancer.” This is a situation that far too many people have had to go through; especially those who smoke. According to the World Health Organization, tobacco kills around 6 million people a year. This is alarming and certainly unacceptable, especially when there is an effective, safer alternative. This alternative is called ‘vaping’.
This article is about the new health risk concerning vaping. When a toxicologist went to a school to tell students about the damage vaping can do; many students said that they had mouth and throat bleeding that took a long time to heal due to vaping. This made the toxicologist named, Irfan Rahman, very concerned so him and his team decided to investigate what the vapors inhaled from electronic cigarettes might be doing to mouth cells. The October of 2016, him and his team showed that vaping makes the mouth cells flare up which can lead to severe gum disease and tooth loss. After continuing the investigation they also found that the liquid in the vapors can have a cancer leading chemical, this sparked concern because most vapors are being smoked
With technological innovations happening everyday, many products are being created promoting health. Among these products is what is known as a e-cigarette. With no tobacco, tar, or even smoke, it has to be safe. Or is it? E-cigarettes were first introduced in 2006 as an alternative to smoking tobacco products. These e-cigarettes use vapor as opposed to smoke. The user still can receive their fill of nicotine with an added bonus of a flavor choice. With there first launch they weren 't seen as a breakthrough to many people and quickly was pushed aside. However, with growing technological advancements they have become a trending alternative to the normal cigarette. Many are quick to assume that the lack of actual tobacco results in a less dangerous product. But is it actually what it seems?
E-cigarettes appear as an innocent alternative to the real thing but the Food and Drug Administration issued an advisory identifying the “volatile” substances in the device and its emitted smoke may not be that harmless after all (“FDA: Second-Hand Smoke From E-Cigarettes May Be Harmful To Your Health”, 2013). Electronic cigarettes contain organic substances including propylene glycol, flavors, and nicotine which are emitted as a mist into the air in enclosed areas. FDA studies show that these microscopic liquid particles have the possibility of penetrating deep into our lungs. Also cited by the FDA in a German publication on electronic cigarettes shows
