E-cigarettes were made to decrease smoking and nicotine addiction, but recently, surveys have shown that they do the exact opposite. Teenagers have begun taking advantage of e-cigarettes whether they have reached the legal age or not. The main problem with this is that before e-cigarettes were made, many of these teens had never even thought about smoking a cigarette. Many teens believe that since they are not actually inhaling tobacco smoke, there are no risks, but they are wrong. Most of the same risks are still at hand, and it is even easier to become addicted to nicotine while using e-cigarettes because they contain a much higher concentration of it. For this reason, e-cigarettes are causing more harm than good to our generation. …show more content…
According to a report done by The National Academies, e-cigarettes are safer than burning tobacco, but “there is conclusive evidence that … most e-cigarette products contain and emit numerous potentially toxic substances” (Board, The Editorial). Just as many people ignore the fact that smoking cigarettes can do harm, they are ignoring the fact that e-cigarettes have the potential to do the same, and applauding themselves for choosing to not smoke real cigarettes. The risks of smoking e-cigarettes need to be more prominently stated and that if they were, more teens would choose to not smoke them. The use of e-cigarettes is higher among high school students than adults (“Know the Risks”). If they were being used to help adults stop smoking, then this would not be the case. Teens brains are still developing until long into their twenties, and the dangerous amount of nicotine in e-cigarettes can harm brain development (“Smoking & Tobacco”). E-cigarettes are just as addictive, if not more addictive than smoking tobacco, therefore our generation needs to stop using them before it’s too late and we have to find out the hard way about the long-term
Another danger pose by unregulated use of e- cigarettes is that nicotine found in e-cigarettes changes the structure of the brain and lungs which affects the function and responses of the reflexes, increasing ones risk to hypoxia ( Hafstrom O.et.al 2005). Furthermore, in a society that Nursing resources are been stretched and one that depends on the youth for a vibrant tomorrow, it is pertinent that the use and marketing of e-cigarettes should be regulated because young ones are being attracted to smoke e-cigarettes which could further create more medical problems for them. No wonder, health agencies are worried that "nicotine may have a negative impact on adolescent brain development and increase the risk for nicotine addiction that could lead to use of tobacco product" (Schranfnagel
E-cigarettes were originally known as electronic nicotine delivery system. They are now known as vapes, e-hookah, and e-cigs. E-cigarettes work by heating nicotine and other chemicals to make vape. E-cigarettes are new to this society. In the article What We Know about E-Cigarettes,” Most people try and use to stop smoking cigarettes” (paragraph 5). In the same article, it says, “the FDA is working hard to regulate e-cigarettes” (paragraph 3). E-cigarettes are becoming so popular teens are starting to smoke e-cigarettes. A lot teens are introduced to teen by peer pressure. Teenagers should be banned from e-cigarettes because it’s addictive, and it ruins your health, and it’s against the law.
Everyone always wants to be with the latest trend, and as many celebrities and magazine ads have pictures of vaping, electronic cigarettes have become a "trend”. People are largely unaware of the emergency risks of vaping. According to a study by Mitch Zeller he states, “I can say definitely, that nicotine is harmful to a developing teenage brain. And no teenager, no young person. should be using any tobacco or nicotine-containing products”. Unlike true cigarettes, electronic cigarettes do not have
The e-cigarette format, however, does not eliminate concerns regarding public and individual health risks. The World Health Organization has called for e-cigarette usage to be monitored in the same way as more conventional tobacco products,(23) the US FDA is advocating for more research,(24) and there has been a dramatic increase in analyses of the chemical, physiological, psychological and socio-cultural aspects of e-cigarettes.(2-7,9-12,14-21,24-52)
Electronic cigarettes have become very popular in the last few years, which has led both young children and teens to begin using them. There have been various instances in which children, as young as toddlers, have gotten their hands on their parent's electronic cigarettes or e-juice, leading to an increase in calls to the emergency room. The increase was so great that, "over half of the 2,405 calls to poison centers between September 2010 and February 2014 concerned children 5 and under who have come into contact with e-cigarettes" (Are E-cigarettes Safer Than Regular Cigarettes?). The effects of electronic cigarettes so far have not been proven to show any significant damage on the health of adults; however, the effects on children and teens may be more dangerous than one would
A major issues we face today is how un-informed people are on the vaping world also known as e-cigarettes. For that I have chosen an article called America’s vaping revolution: How suspicious should we really be of the e-cigarette craze by Noah Charney posted on Sunday, Dec 7th, 2014. This article is about what e-cigarettes are, where they came from and their uses and effects that they can cause. I’m choosing this article because vaping (smoking E-cigarettes) is something that not a lot of people understand. Some people believe it is bad for you and that it won’t help stop smoking and that it can still cause health issues. Other things include the cost; some say it cost less than cigarettes and should e-cigs not be allowed in certain places. Most people are not informed about vaping on if it’s truly harmful or not they just assume it’s the same as smoking a cigarettes and that’s all it is but over the years it has changed a lot.
The profitable business of electronic cigarettes has raised over $3 Billion dollars annually, vastly spread across over 466 brands which have joined the ordeal. Above all, known as a “gateway drug”, electronic cigarettes have claimed the once-ordinary lives of people, specifically to those who have turned from tobacco cigarettes. What is more, scientists have determined that not enough research has been executed to automatically assume the healthiness of e-cigarettes. Despite this, many have claimed that e-cigarettes, are, and will be the new “healthy” drug, so to speak. Provided that e-cigarettes do not release harmful smoke, they are still not safe for one’s health given that not enough research has been performed on them.
“ The true face of smoking is disease, death and horror – not the glamour and sophistication the pushers in the tobacco industry try to portray ”. – David Byrne. Smoking has been an habit in teenagers and adults for a very long time and it is well known that it is harmful for them as well for the environment. Technology has advanced, and now there are electronic cigarettes, called E-cigarette, which are devices with battery that carry nicotine heated aersosol in a fashion that imitates common cigarettes, while carrying lower levels of toxins than a conventional lit cigarette. They can be used indoors, which allows smokers to get their fix wherever and whenever they want. A study from NBC News (Leshae) shows that electronic cigarettes are a technique for smokers to try quitting their addictions. Manufacturers consider that e-cigarattes are healthier than normal tobacco cigarattes, since smokers are inhaling vaporized nicotine rather of carcinogen-filled smoke. However, according to a Thomas Jefferson University Alumni article, some reseachers have found harmful ingredients in certain e-cigarettes, such as ethylene glycol poisoning, a primary ingredient in brake fluid and antifreeze. E-cigarettes mey seem like a healthier alternative to traditional cigarettes, nevertheless there is some research that proves the contrary and we still don’t know its long term effect.
In conclusion, more Americans need to be aware of the dangers of e-cigs including their addictive levels of nicotine, and harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde. Thedailybeast addressed the dangerous of e-cigs to not only the user, but other in this statement ,”Outside the risk of exposure to cancer-causing agents, e-cigarettes have been shown to prove dangerous to kids.” This shows that the dangers caused by e-cigs can indirectly harm others, and is posing as a threat to the user's health and can act as a bad influence toward the youth. This is why americans need to relook at how safe e-cigarettes
In the past decade e-cigarettes industry has been growing quite rapidly. E-cigarettes were first created as a better alternative to the conventional tobacco cigarettes, pipes, and cigars. However, in todays society they have become a very popular commodity. Likewise, they are mostly used for mere pleasure and not what its original purpose was. Originally the sole purpose of e-cigarettes was to help wean their users off of the unhealthy drugs we all know as the conventional tobacco cigarettes (Dockrell, 1). But are they really the healthier alternative? Absolutely not. E-cigarettes are extremely unhealthy, used as a gate-way substitute, and also affect others who aren’t even directly using it!
Even after “hitting” or inhaling the vapor of an electronic vaping device once, the nicotine “increases heart rate” which “constricts blood vessels” and may lead to a “heart attack or stroke” (Radcliff). Although these devices may be less dangerous than the traditional cigarette, the chemicals and nicotine within the vaporizing device can have deadly effects on the human body because the formaldehyde within the vaporizing device is highly toxic and can lead to suffocation of the lungs. If these apparatus’ were legalized for minors, young teens would easily be able to get their hands on these devices and face heart failure and cancer from damaged cells early on in their lives. As many Americans know, there is a direct correlation between cigarettes and lung cancer, so a myriad of health professionals and researchers fear e-cigarettes will “renormalize smoking” (“Time for E-Cigarette”). The nicotine and formaldehyde within these machines is highly addictive and it may lead to long term effects, or it may be a feeder into harder drugs. Legalization for minors could lead to a large percentage of Generation Z children struggling with cancer and heart disease in their
Each month, the scientific literature surrounding e-cigarettes grows and shows that the e-cigarette causes less harm than smoking. We have seen more than 150 published scientific studies associated with
Many people smoke e-cigarettes instead of regular cigarettes because they think they are a safe alternative. There is less smoke and they taste good! So they must be ok, right? Well that’s not so true. The chemical diacetyl is found in 75% of e-cigarettes. This chemical is linked to respiratory disease. It’s also the chemical that is used to flavor the smoke from your e-cigarettes taste good. In some States teens as young as sixteen are able to buy e-cigs from gas station in my opinion i think it's illegal to let teens buy e-cigarettes they can get lung disease known as popcorn lung
E-Cigarettes have become the latest talk in replacing traditional cigarette smoking, especially internationally. Doctors and individuals now are being persuaded into thinking e-cigarettes are a better substitute for smoking, and some doctors are even suggesting e- cigarettes to their patients. Yet, a growing amount of research is suggesting that e-cigarettes have not been proven to be safe, and have been
While more research on electronic cigarettes is necessary, there’s significant evidence that e-cigarettes are helping many people. Further, there’s no evidence that non-smokers, such as children, are choosing to use e-cigarettes as a gateway to regular cigarettes. To compare e-cigarettes to tobacco just as a precaution is incorrect, harmful and immoral when millions of people have the chance to move away from the known and severe harms of smoking
