But He that hath the steerage of my course Direct my sail. (Romeo and Juliet, Act I: iv, 106-113) Romeo is telling Mercutio that he has a dream. The dream is that if Romeo goes to the Capulet party he will die. Yet, he decides to go to the party anyway. The above quote is important to the theme of fate and choice, because most plays about fate and choice usually show the main character trying to change their fate but having their fate come true anyway. Romeo, however, chooses to go to the party despite of his ominous dream. The quote shows what happens to Romeo happens because he chooses to go to the party. The third quote is ?O, I am fortunes fool!? (Romeo and Juliet, Act III: I, 135). Romeo has just married Juliet and he goes into the town square where Tybalt is waiting there to fight him. Romeo refuses to fight Tybalt because Romeo has a love for Tybalt but Romeo cannot tell Tybalt how he loves Tybalt. Mercutio gets disgusted by this and fights Tybalt. Romeo tries to break up the fight, in spite of this Tybalt?s sword stabs Mercutio. Romeo gets enraged by this and goes after Tybalt. Romeo, not thinking that Tybalt will be put to death because he broke the king?s law, goes after Tybalt and kills Tybalt. Romeo chooses his fate and kills Tybalt. Since Romeo, kills Tybalt Romeo can be sentenced to death and never see Juliet again. This quote is important to the theme of fate and choice in the play because Romeo blames Tybalt?s death on fortune.
