Astronomers use a term called the goldilocks zone to determine if an exoplanet can form liquid water on its surface. A goldilocks zone is simply a distance that an exoplanet must be to form liquid water, and the goldilocks zone is different depending on the size and temperature of the star that an exoplanet is orbiting. If an exoplanet is orbiting too close around its host star, the temperature on the exoplanet will be too hot to form liquid water ion its surface as the star will cause any liquid water that is on the exoplanets surface to boil into steam. If an exoplanet is too orbiting too far from its host star, it will receive very little starlight and the surface of the exoplanet will be too cold to melt ice into liquid water, so instead the water is frozen to form ice. Astronomers use the transit method to determine how close an exoplanet is orbiting around its host star, and have determined that an exoplanet that orbits once a week will be too close to its host star, and temperatures on the surface will be too hot. The new planet is known as HD 219134b and it followed NASA's discovery of the planet Kepler-452b, discovered by the Kepler telescope. The Kepler-452b apparently resembles Earth much more than the HD 219134b exoplanet. It maintains a 385 orbit and its host star is only 20 percent brighter than the Earth's sun. However, HD 219134b is much closer to Earth than the Kepler-452b, and for that reason, scientists have high expectations from it.

An article from CNN says that NASA has discovered seven new earth-like planets revolving around a dwarf sun and said that if there was another place in the universe for life to continue, “it may be in the TRAPPIST-1 system [the newly discovered solar system]” (Strickland, 1). This can inspire scientists to begin thinking of ways we can travel to the TRAPPIST-1 system in the event that Earth is no longer habitable. Money going into space program funds will be necessary because new ideas will come from research and will benefit the human race. People might say that the chances of Earth being unsuitable for life are slim, and therefore, money shouldn’t be put in for research. However, without any knowledge, there will be no chance of survival, and it is better to be safe.

The main searches for exoplanets are being done by space missions. The Kepler space mission is finding the most exoplanets, however there are many other space missions like Gaia, MOST, CoRoT, and SWEEPS, that are finding exoplanets in habitable zones. There are also ground missions including the Anglo Australian Planet Search and HARPS which is done in Geneva. Cornell University is now making models of the habitable zone which some Trappist planets are in. What is it? Trappist is an ultra cool dwarf star that has seven planets orbiting it “while there is much to learn about these distant, potentially habitable worlds.”( Nick Lavars) This ultra cool door star is 40 light away. When it took place? NASA announced Trappist one on February 22nd. Most of Trappist planets are the size of earth. Trappist was named after the beer made by the Trappist monks. Trappist is about 229 trillion miles away. Many scientist have been studing the habitable zone now that Trappist was discovered.

According to the article, scientist found first earth sized planets outside of our solar system. Nasa astronauts found two new planets. The two planets are far away from our solar system. One of the planets dubbed Kepler-20e is around the same size as earth, but it measures 0.87 times the radius of earth. The other planet Kepler-20f measures around 1.03 times the earth radius, which is a bit larger than the earth.
