Discovering My Leadership Style Finding a leadership style is like finding the dress or suit that fits just right. It may take several attempts, but once you find the one that fits, it is usually the one you will keep. For this class, we were asked to take a 50 question survey from Kent University to help us figure out what type of leadership style fits us best. From the results provided from the test, my leadership style was typed as participative. When reading more about participative leadership, I saw a quote I was able to resonate with completely, “The leader makes the final decision, but the team to contribute to the decision-making process” (How to find, n.d.). This quote made me realized that this type of leadership fit me down to the T. In terms of effective communication, I always make an effort to make sure the listener absolutely understands what I am conveying. By asking questions or bringing up any concerns they might have, I am able to make sure that everyone is on the same page. My job presents several opportunities to help teach and train new operators. By having a participant leadership style, I must ensure new operators know how to work within their position proficiently. As a trainer, I deal with trainees who at times feel overwhelmed with the plethora of information given to them. I find it important to give encouragement and facilitate training when need be. Being a participant leader requires a great of humility: “The leader can 't know everything”
After taking the Leadership quiz I discovered that my leadership style is Participative. Participative leaders often ask the opinion of group members and solving problems but ultimately make the final decision. I agree with my findings and I often apply this leadership style at work. I find myself asking other coworkers their opinion on how to troubleshoot a problem. In the nursing occupation it is very important to have teamwork. Being a participative leader exemplifies teamwork. This displays that I value the opinions of my coworkers and feel that everyone should be able to make recommendations and suggestions and as a leader I can take those ideas and make a final decision. On my unit I was a charge nurse and as a charge nurse I always tried to include the recommendations of my coworkers.
Leadership is a vital part of the business environment because it entails of giving direction to member in order to accomplish a common goal. Leadership styles are important aspects of an organization because certain techniques are more effective in different situations. When leadership is effective, then the outcomes are positive and desired goals are attained. This paper will explore the different leadership styles with reference to my own personal leadership style. It will give reasons why a participative style works best in the healthcare profession.
Urban Meyer is the head coach for The Ohio State Buckeyes football team. He is 49 years old and was born in Toledo Ohio. He attended University of Cincinnati where he played football. Coach Meyer is married and has three children. Prior to coaching Ohio State he retired from coaching was working as a sports analyst for ESPN. Before retiring and working for ESPN, Coach Meyer was the head coach for the University of Florida. Leadership has many definitions, is multifaceted, and involves numerous aspects, such as identifying goals, providing support, inspiring and motivating people to act, and promoting the values of a group or organization (Giltinane, 2013). Some of the characteristics an effective leader possesses are honesty, creativity, emotional stability, energy, flexibility, conceptual skills, perseverance, and knowledge (Huber, 2014). Based on the Leadership Style Survey, my leadership style is determined to be participative, also referred to as democratic. This approach places emphasis on people, relationships, and teamwork. The leadership styles that resonated the most with me were servant leadership and shared governance. I identify with the servant leadership style the most strongly because of the 12 principles that mirror my personal work ethic and values. I believe a good leader is one that is able to listen to others and work to motive and provide an environment that nurtures growth and continued learning. One example, of a time that I have demonstrated servant leadership was when I acted as a preceptor to a new nurse tech in the ED. I started our first encounter by asking her what she had covered on her first day of orientation that she had with a different nurse tech. I listened to her and learned what things we
I prefer to use a participatory style of leadership. It encourages cooperation, consensus, and group success. Final responsibility for the overall operation belongs to the leader, but he/she cannot do it all. Good leaders surround themselves with capable people and use their expertise to meet the organizational goals.
According to J. Seyfarth, there are four types of leadership styles: directive, supportive, participative, and achievement-oriented leadership (Seyfarth, 1996). These styles vary from one another, but all may be visible within a school environment. During a recent interview with an elementary school principal, Amy Zilbar, she described her dominate leadership style as supportive (personal communication, April 25, 2013).

The Participative Leadership style seeks the diversity in others idea to create the a multilevel perspective dynamic community amongst the team. As a leaders I drive for the unity and boundless efforts of communication, interpretations and goal setting among my team members. A transparent leadership style, such as Participative Leadership promotes an unwavering organizational culture.
Leadership and motivation styles vary from person to person, that is why it is essential for managers to know and understand their leadership style and how their particular leadership affects their workplace. Leadership is influenced by many things that is why it is so important to know how and why your leadership style is what it is. I sometime find it hard to approach teammates because every teammate is not the same and I have to use the right choice of words to explain situations. It is important for teammates to understand that I’m here to help them grow and develop to the next position. Secondly, I feel like I give teammates to many answers to questions rather than letting them figure it out for themselves. For me it is easy to answer questions or do things base off my experience, but it hinders teammates from learning. Thirdly, I over work myself to the point I am overwhelmed and become burnout. Sometimes I need to slow down and observe situations and my surroundings. Because it can become very stressful. Participative leadership works when you have other teammates involve and working together, but this leadership style has area for opportunity too. A deliberate process is usually a slow process and you may run into a situation where you needed a quick decision within that moment. This can be a problem is participative style is normally slow. Diluted expertise can play a major role in weakness of participative leader if you have someone that has less experience then someone that has more experience. It can bring down the quality of the company. Participative leadership- With this leadership leaders, focus on participation. They tend to consider the followers ideas, before making decisions. This style of leadership works best when followers want to give their inputs when situations are complex, or when a task is challenging.
