I will be comparing the corporate social responsibility (CSR) of Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s. Social responsibility means that a company invests in communities, protects the environment, pays their taxes, provides equal treatment, provides adequate health care, etc. CSR is an act of maturity, where companies feel obligated to give back to those who assisted them in their success. A company needs both the employees and customers to be satisfied. Hence, companies feel obligated to give back to their community; a practice of appreciation and sympathy. I will begin with talking about the background of each company, followed by the employees, investors, customers, and environment.

Whole Foods is a retailer that specializes in organic foods and it has done an excellent job of determining its target market and how to position itself. Instead of going head to head with large food retailers such as Wal-Mart, Whole Foods has found a niche market that works perfectly for itself. This social responsibility enhances the company’s image within the community, which increases both customer loyalty and satisfaction of employees. Some of the ways that businesses serve others is through philanthropy and backing environmental sustainability. Within his lecture on ethics and corporate responsibility, Dr. Kahlib Fischer (n.d.) encourages the importance of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in that it provides mutual benefit to both the organization and the community.

Tyson foods is a very large food company based out of Springdale Arkansas primarily known for its’ meat products. Donnie Smith the CEO of Tyson foods knows that those who dislike meat production and even meat-eating may never really like his company. Other consumers may wonder if Tyson Foods is just another profit-centered corporation that only cares about the bottom line. Modern companies need to be considered credible by their stakeholders. How can a company like Tyson foods demonstrate corporate social responsibility in a meaningful way that is not shallow, devoid of real significance? Tyson Foods decided to focus on ending childhood hunger.

Whole Foods grocery retailer maintains over 175 stores in North America and Europe and has been consistently nominated as “100 Best Companies to Work For” (Hill, 2006). Furthermore, this type of quality should be considered when reviewing a company because this involves much teamwork and ethical responsibilities.

Whole Foods builds both human and social capital. Human capital is built initially upon hire. The company sets out to hire good people and train them well so they are capable of becoming high performers (Kreitner and Kinicki, 1998, p. 30).Educating the new hire not only on the specific job description, but on the mission of the company will secure the “buy in” to the vision of the company.

Good CSR means to me that a company is investing time and efforts in having a small carbon impact. A company with a good philanthropy is also an example of good CSR because community programs benefit from resources many large companies have. A good example of a company that practices good form of CSR is Ben and Jerry’s who uses only fair traded ingredients in their ice creams. A company with bad CSR is Walmart who has been accused of discrimination, environmental crimes among others. Walmart has a theory called the “Walmart phenomenon” where a new Walmart can virtually wipe out most mom and pop stores in a city.

The policies of companies are relatively impacted by their corporate social responsibility. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is an organization's drives to survey and take control for the company's effect on environmental and social prosperity (Investopedia 2015). Primark is a clothing retailer Company founded by Arthur Ryan in June 1969. It is a subsidiary company of the ABF plc (Associated British Foods) group. The business evolved gradually and by 2000 there were over 100 Primark stores across Ireland and Britain, by 2012, Primark owned at least 238 outlets across Europe, Ireland and UK (Primark, 2015).

The corporate social responsibility has developed into a practice that is necessary for companies that desire to have and maintain a positive image, retain their employees and improve the brand (Moura-Leite & Padgett, 2011). McKesson is a pharmaceutical solutions provider that provides technology, products, and resources for healthcare facilities.

Ben & Jerry’s is a renowned Ice Cream company which becomes a social enterprise icon since it was founded in 1978 (Kazs, Page, 2013).And it is claimed that Ben & Jerry’s ice cream is the best in the world for its comfortable environment, equitable system, and being kind to its cows by Time Magazine in 1981(Dennis et al, 1998).
