Question
Chapter 16.2, Problem 16.12QAP
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation: Select the compound in the pair with highest boiling point. Give suitable reasoning.
a) Propanone (acetone) or propanoic acid
b) propanoic acid or hexanoic acid
c) ethanol or ethanoic acid
Concept introduction:
a) The boiling point is the temperature when vapor pressure of a liquid becomes equal to the atmospheric pressure. Hence to boil a liquid needs to overcome the intermolecular forces.
b) Stronger the intermolecular forces difficult to boil the liquid or higher the boiling point.
c) Hydrogen bonds are formed between hydrogen, directly attached to highly electronegative element (F, O or N), and highly electronegative element viz. F, O or N.
