Chapter 3, Problem 3.28P
Interpretation Introduction

(a)

Interpretation:

The arrangement of the given compounds in order of their increasing Brønsted acidity is to be stated.

Concept introduction:

The species which accepts proton from another species are termed as Brønsted base. On the other hand, the species which donates proton to another species are known as Brønsted acid. The strong conjugate acid has always a weak base.

Interpretation Introduction

(b)

Interpretation:

The arrangement of the compounds in order of their increasing basicity is to be stated.

Concept introduction:

Basicity is the availability of an electron pair. The electron pairs which are available can be donated easily that means basicity of that compound also increases. On moving left to right in a period, the basicity decreases as the tendency of atoms to gain electron increases. Basicity is also affected by the s character, that is, hybridization. The more the s character, the less is the basicity.

Arrange in increasing acidity. Then explain the answer in terms of their partial charge and inductive effects
Arrange the numbered protons in decreasing order of acidity, explain the reasoning based upon the conjugate bases.
Explain using examples how electronic factors (resonance and inductive effects) can be used to determine acidity and basicity of organic compounds. Use electronic and stability factors to account for the acidity of each highlighted hydrogen in the molecule below. Identify the most acidic proton. (a) HO. (b) HO. (c) H.
