Question
Chapter 7, Problem 7.40P
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
Which of the carbocation rearrangements from Problem 7.36 will produce a significantly more stable carbocation than the reactant is to be determined.
Concept introduction:
The stability of carbocations depends on the number of alkyl groups attached to the carbon bearing the charge. The stability of different types of carbocations increases in the order
Apart from the nature of the carbon bearing the charge, the stability is also affected by resonance. The larger the number of atoms over which the charge is delocalized, the higher the stability.

3. Will the following carbocations rearrang e? If so, draw the rearrangement using a curved arrow and the new
carbocation. You may have to draw in the H-atom and its bond to properly illustrate the hydride shift. Two will not
rearrange.
5. Draw the mechanism that produces the major product for the following reactions. Do not draw minor
products. Include resonance structures of the intermediates. Make sure you add all arrows! For both
the reagents reacting together and resonance structures. Lone pairs must be shown on atoms that have
charges. This includes the nitro group when drawn out. Arrows either start at electrons and end on at
atom or start in the middle of a bond and end on the atom.
