Answer to Problem 1P

The magnitude of the impedance as a function of σ and jω is sketched as shown in Figure 2 and Figure 3.

Explanation of Solution

Given data:

The admittance is,

Z(s)=2+5s

Calculation:

The admittance is given by,

Z(s)=2+5s

Substitute σ+jω for s in the above equation as follows,

Z(s)=2+5(σ+jω)

Z(s)=2+5σ+5jω        (1)

Finding the magnitude of the above function,

|Z(s)|=|2+5σ+5jω|=(2+5σ)2+ω2

Matlab code for the Impedance model:

sigma = linspace(-10,10,21);

omega = linspace(-10,10,21);

[X, Y] = meshgrid(sigma,omega);

Z = abs(2 + 5*X + j*5*Y);

colormap(hsv);

s = [-5 3 8];

surfl(X,Y,Z,s);

view (-20,5)

Matlab output:

The plot for the magnitude of given impedance is shown in Figure 1.

Sketch for jω:

Consider the admittance,

Z(s)=2+5s

Replace s=jω in the above equation,

Z(jω)=2+5(jω)

Taking magnitude,

|Z|=22+(5ω)2

|Z|=4+25ω2

For various values of ω in the above equation, the sketch will be as follows,

Sketch for σ:

Consider the admittance,

Z(s)=2+5s

Replace s=σ in the above equation,

Z(σ)=2+5σ

For various values of σ in the above equation, the sketch will be as follows,
