Belonging, Being and Becoming are the main elements that guide our pedagogical practice and having a strong sense of identity is an essential outcome of gaining a strong sense of belonging, being and becoming. For a child to gain a strong sense of identity it is important for educators to gain a strong understanding and respect for the individual child’s culture and by gaining this knowledge we can effectively include their culture in our daily practices, programmes and centre policies and philosophy. Including the child’s values, traditions and practices in all areas of the services allows the child to feel valued and respected for who they are and where they come from and gives them the confidence to be active participants in all aspects
Ambition For Understanding One source once stated, “Children begin to develop a sense of identity as individuals and as members of groups from their earliest interactions with others” (Trumbull and Pacheco 9). This quote displays the importance of developing a strong sense of cultural identity, structure, and association from a very young age. Being a part of something bigger than one’s self gives meaning to life, conceives a favorable lifestyle, and influences significant life decisions. Understanding nourishes belonging while a lack of understanding can prevent people from belonging. Whether it is a community, youth group or even religion, belonging is an everyday occurrence of like that many of us do not even realise. I believe that our culture helps to shape our identity and therefore I believe that early childhood education should reflect the culture of the children attending the program, while teaching other cultures to promote diversity and inclusion. Aboriginal Head Start programs are contributing back to the communities through culturally responsive education, which reinforces Aboriginal identity. Nguyen (2011) argues that Aboriginal early childhood education needs to provide children with a “sense of who they are and where the come from, which will impact community self-government and self-determination” (p.231). When delivering school curriculum, educators must meet the needs and strengths of all students. The Australian Curriculum allows educators to personalize their teaching and learning programs by selecting content that is stimulating, challenging and meets the individual needs and strengths of all students in a classroom (Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority [ACARA], 2015). The Early Years Learning Framework (2010) explains how a student’s culture is central to who they are as a human being and gives them a sense of belonging (pp. 21-22). Identity is a socially and historically constructed concept. An individual learns about their own identity through interactions with family, peers, organizations, media, and educational institutions. Education and identity are two closely related topics. On average, most Americans will spend a fourth of their life in educational institutions. During this time period students are growing and maturing, but most importantly they are discovering themselves. Students realize their qualities, determine their morals, and establish their beliefs during this time of instruction. Undoubtedly, education forms and challenges a person’s identity throughout the years.
Our perception of our identity is constantly changing, the groups we belong to, the people we talk to and the way we connect with others help to form our identity. There is one thing we all have in common despite our individual identities, is the need to belong. There’s no obligation to belong to only one group, you can belong to many. An individual can belong to many groups, which will then create multiple identities; hence our understanding of identity is never constant. Belonging to a loving family, group of caring friends that help us to develop our own sense of self. However, belonging can have a negative side. For example our families might have an expectation of us to do something that might alter our ambitions and interfere with

Classrooms full of students and teachers with different backgrounds can be beneficial for students and teachers themselves.
