The Civil War was a conflict that helped shape America to become the country it is today. Though its foundation and origination are debated, historians agree that it was deadlier for Americans than the American Revolution, World War I, World War II, and Vietnam War. The North and South differed in many aspects, slavery being the most controversial. The South’s persistency and “free-labor” ideology, contrasted with the North’s attempts to stop its spread into their own region. Such mass destruction and casualties derived from conflicting issues that only grew as time went on, and with no room for compromises, war was irrepressible. An ongoing sense of sectionalism between the growing North and traditional South was created due to the drastically different economies. At this time, the North became a manufacturing and commercializing empire due to it’s technological advancements and abundance of resources. There were many attempts to stop its spread through the voices of bold, brave, abolitionists, who successfully spread their ideas. Harriet Beecher Stowe’s, Uncle Tom’s Cabin brought the message of abolition to new audience and served as constant reminder of how deeply the institution of slavery was dividing America. The ruling of the Dred Scott case was another instance in where differing opinions caused turmoil, in addition, the to the declaration of laws under the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional. This upset many Northerners as a growing resentment to those in power began. The country became so divided that no single persons, law, or compromise could mend the damage made.
