College Campus Safety 1 . Running head: COLLEGE CAMPUS SAFETY & SHOOTINGS College Campuses Safety and Shootings, Are We Secure While Learning Nadia Clark Troy University College Campus Safety 2 Date rapes, hate crimes and theft have become an apparent concern on college campuses. The most disturbing crime on a college campus is a school shooting. Being a victim of any crime is the last thing any student or parent thinks of when choosing a college or university. The possibilities of danger on a college campus have been increasing over the years due to the reported crimes ranging from theft to murder. Because of the recent years of college campus reported shootings, both student and parent have become alarmingly concerned about …show more content…
It is my opinion that the lack of security and warning signs overlooked by administration is the chief problem as to how these crimes take place on campuses. Did campus security and school the administrations do enough to keep the students safe? Did fellow classmates and faculty members ignore warning signs of both Whitman and Seung-Hui? And what security changes have been implemented in the event of another unforeseen shooting? Since the Virginia Tech shootings, school campuses across America have repeatedly discussed campus safety ideas such as emergency responses and communications. Many colleges and universities have increased their security officers on campuses while also trying high tech security options (Saavedra). One of the high tech security measures many colleges are interested in using to alert their students is the mass text-message alerts in case of an emergency. This is a notification system that sends text message to students on their cell phones during a shooting, earthquake, bomb scare, or any other emergencies (Saavedra). Although this sounds like a very good security idea, most colleges don’t have the money or resources to make this idea happen which means they are having to resort to just adding security officers to ride around campus on bicycles with loud speakers to spread the message during emergencies (Saavedra). Even though schools have
Way too often are sexual assaults happening on colleges campuses. Because of these sexual assaults, females students have a hard time being safe on campus, or even staying on campuses. Statistics state, “1 in 4 college women will be the victim of sexual assault during her academic career… Every 21 hours there is a rape on an American college campus… College women are most vulnerable to rape during the first few weeks of their freshman and sophomore years”(Sexual Violence on College Campuses). Everyone says that your college days are the best days. Well they are, until a sexual assault or a murder has occurred on your campus. Now students are afraid to walk on their campus and feel safe and secure. They are afraid to enjoy their college experiences, thus not making their college experience the best years of their life. Do you think that Campus Security is doing enough to help prevent these crimes from happening? Do you think that the college crimes are only happening to certain students? Is college really as safe for students as it is made out to be? To understand the dangers of college campuses, it is important to analyze the statistics of college crimes, the people committing these crimes, the data from high profile cases, and the steps to make campuses safer. I feel like if the students on campus know that they have a safe environment then they will enjoy life more, maybe even become more
On October 1, 2015, Christopher Harper-Mercer walked into Umpqua Community College and shot eighteen people. A week later shootings occurred at universities in Arizona and Texas leaving two dead. According to a study in 2013, the FBI identified thirty-nine active shooting cases in educational settings, and these cases accounted for the highest number of casualties(_). With the threat of active shootings in educational settings, many universities are trying to increase security on college campuses in order to protect students and staff members. The need for heightened security allows universities to constantly monitor the activities of students in order to create a safe environment. Many universities, such as Loyola University Chicago, implement guidelines that aid in controlling students and creating docile individuals. At Loyola University Chicago, it utilizes surveillance cameras and identification cards to protect students. Moreover, the need for control transcends surveillance for security reasons and is utilized in academics through the grading
As a current student at Delgado Community College, I perceived that there are barely any campus police patrolling the perimeter, despite having a building within campus. This causes for concern due to recent school tragedies that have occurred just this year. Among the college related shootings in 2018, there were more than 10 high school shootings (Ahmed). The high school I attended in 2008, had a student count of less than 500 girls, and no security if any emergency were to transpire. It was a small campus consisted of two, old buildings that were easily accessed during school hours. If there was an active shooter, there would be nothing we could have done except to hide and pray no one gets hurt. If campuses have few security officers, or none, we expect our faculty and teachers to protect us. But, for them to protect students and other faculty, they need the proper equipment to do so. As Timothy Wheeler describes the words of Massad Ayoob, “The only solution is a prepared and brave defender with a proper lifesaving tool – a gun.” Teachers and faculty need to have access to a
Though most college campuses are statistically safer than the surrounding communities as a whole, college campuses do occasionally host to every type of violent crime found in the rest of society, from murder to assault to rape. Although social education is the best way to deal with a problem like this, under the threatening situations of campus violence, armed police campus should be done as prevention.
Most college campuses are “open”, meaning that practically anyone can walk on to them and many buildings do not have metal detectors or security guards (Renneker 1). She cites the Virginia Tech shooting tragedy where the shooter was not even a student at the college, he simply walked on campus undetected and shot and killed 33 people before killing himself (Renneker 4). It is not difficult for one to enter a college campus and cause harm with a firearm if they intend to do so, anyone who has been on a public American college or university campus has seen non-students passing through at some point. She also cites the Department of Homeland Security’s study of response time for school shootings, “The average duration of an active shooter situation at a school is 12.5 minutes; while average police response time is 10 minutes“ (Renneker 4). Renneker makes a valid point in demonstrating that school shootings are very hard to prevent, and that the average police response time is not fast enough to effectively stop them.
Murders often involve incident characteristics. Most of the murders are committed by someone the victim is familiar with, and most offenders use a firearm as their choice of weapon. “An examination of victim and offender race indicates that murder is primarily interracial” (Renninson & Dodge,2018, p.55). In the recent years violence amongst college students has become a topic of interest. “Research is clear in general, off campus areas prove to be more dangerous than those off campus” (Renninson & Dodge,2018,
The tragic events at Virginia Tech in April of 2007 and Northern Illinois University in February of 2008 have policymakers, campus officials and citizens looking for solutions to prevent future attacks (Dickerson). Violent shootings that have occurred on a few college campuses in recent years have provoked a debate over
"Campus Violence is defined as any action or behavior that may threaten the safety of a member of the campus community, impact his or her physical and/or psychological well-being, or cause damage to campus property" (http://www.sacredheart.edu/officesservices/publicsafety/silentwitnessprogram/flashpointoncampuspowerpointtrainingslides). Many individuals think that violence on college and university campuses is rare and view their campus to be a home away from home. However, "Nationwide, 17 percent of college students indicated they had experienced some form of violence or harassment in the previous year" (http://counseling.uoregon.edu/dnn/ParentsFamilies/PreventingViolenceonCollegeCampuses/tabid/164/Default.aspx). The various types of violence that occur on campus include harassment, stalking, vandalism, physical assault, sexual assault, and other forms of interpersonal violence and suicide. Sexual assault occurs more frequently on college campuses and is estimated that a third of women experience an unwanted sexual experience. The majority of the time, sexual assault on college campuses are committed by someone known to the victim. Central Texas College (CTC) is currently among the top of two year colleges with numerous awards and acknowledgements. For 50 years it has served students, employees, and community members alike with its exceptional educational programs and events. With CTC’s rapid expansion, it has achieved a monumental student population of nearly 81,000 worldwide. Roughly 16,400 of these students attend the central Killeen campus. With such a large student body and accompanying staff, CTC certainly has a full workload in terms of providing service. Part of its service requirement is providing safety and security to the CTC community. While CTC provides outstanding service in many departments, there is room for improvement in the safety and security of the
College campuses today are recognized as places with high crime rates, with crimes ranging from sexual assault to theft to cheating. While many students may say they feel safe on campus, some report that there is still a sense of fear; some even say they don’t trust their fellow students when it comes to their belongings. It is true that most perpetrators are fellow students, and they are only successful because they know the routines of their fellow colleagues and know the best periods to attack.
Because the seriousness of this crime goes unnoticed, there will be a continuous need for studies to be conducted to continue to make colleges and universities of Florida become more aware of the situation at hand. The importance of this study was that society does not look over the college victims of campus assaults. The researcher plans to examine campus assaults and its impact on current college students within the state of Florida. This study is significant because the numbers of campus assaults will continue to rise; some may even go unreported if no action is
Truth be told: the American people are suffering from self-inflicted limitations and mediocracy. Between college safezones and recurring oversensitivity, society has limited what can and cannot be said in acquirement to recently emerging offence. The Berkeley protests were the first series of inciting incidents that led to national implications and constituted the onset of the counterculture era. It was these students in California who birthed a new era on college campuses, one in which students would demand to be included, to be treated like adults, and to have a very public say on such hotbed issues as civil rights and the Vietnam War. Despite the American root of “being heard,” the american people have entirely switched from megaphones to
College can be a stressful place and experience. Wouldn't it be nice to have a place to relax during your day? As stressful as life or college can be it's nice to have a safe comfortable environment to study get help or just meet new people. Anyone can go to a safe zone there is no discrimination. No threats or hate just stress relieving which is good for everyone. Not everyone agrees with safe zones. There are many ways to go about setting up these safe zones.
Lately Brevard College was named one of the safest colleges in America, but the real question is are we really safe at Brevard College? For a school that has a tuition of $38,000 and at least 800 students and the campus size of 120 acres of land, there is only a couple campus security guards strolling around this campus and strolling an off campus resident. Two years ago, there was a problem with some females getting stalked and almost assaulted on campus. Until this day, we have yet to find the suspects because the suspects have gotten away because of only a one security guard being on duty and that’s not the only reason the suspects got away, it’s because our security guards are not capable enough to catch the suspects. Even though this is a small college, me and my partners believe that Brevard College should invest in a campus police. I believe every college should have at least campus policies regardless of the size of the campus. Every since 2007 at the University of Virginia Tech, I think that’s when college campuses should have been heavy on security or campus police. The students on campus should be able to walk around knowing they are safe whether it’s in the daylight or nightfall. As a student of Brevard College who stays on campus, I wonder about my safety every day. One of the most important aspect parents look for when they send their child off to college is “Will my child be safe when l leave?” Me and my fellow colleagues believe Brevard College should plan
With the school’s recent budget drop, the limitation of campus security employment had struck a high. Only one security officer is hired at a time, with the substantial perk of being unarmed at all times at the Umpqua campus. This factor contributes to the numerous cracks in God’s gift of education within our beloved country. Studies have shown that at least sixty-three percent of small town colleges are more likely of experiencing a massive on-campus shooting. Take Farmingdale University, for example: their prestige rating in safety is excellent compared to the recently endangered Delta State University. A school population peaking five thousand versus a school that exceeds eight thousand. Which campus would you attempt to wreak havoc on?
