The Civil War was the war that divided the young American nation into two opposing sides. Most people argue that the argument, between the North and the South, over slavery was the main reason why the South left the Union. With the introduction of The Articles of Confederation. The Article of Confederations gave the power to the federal government. This weak federal government would soon be replaced when the Articles of Confederation would replace with the U. S. Constitution in 1789. This caused many issues among the states. Many of the states felt that they should be able to decide if they were going to consent to certain federal acts. This would bring about the idea of nullification, which would give the states the right to rule federal act unconstitutional. The new government would deny the idea of nullification pushing the states to move toward secession.

Slavery during the civil war was very important due to its popular demand in slaveholding states, particularly in the southern states. The main cause of the war was slavery because of the south fear of the union abolishing slavery which was very influential to their economy. The war would decide if the confederate states would be able to keep enforcing slavery or the union would abolish it. Abraham Lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation which was an executive order that declared “By January 1, 1863, that all slaves, in southern states would be freed in every territory in the United States.” Every state would be affected due to this executive order on how they feel about slaves being freed and coming to live in their area.

With obtaining new states let it be from buying them, negotiating for it, or full out taking over land from other countries, there was always the question of whether those states would be entered into the country as free states or slave states? The new land had been distributed equally between the free states and the slave states, but there was still fighting over the territories west of the Mississippi. Northern Mexico and California had been taken over by the United States kin 1848, and any states that were proslavery states wanted to expand their land and have more that were slaveholding states. The North did not want more slave holding states, they wanted to limit the increase of territory that was proslavery and to also limit the power proslavery states possessed.
