She hated the people at home when white people talked about their peculiarities; but she always hated herself more because she still thought about them, because she knew their pain at what she was doing with her life. The feelings of shame, at her own people and at the white people, grew inside her, side by side like monstrous twins that would have to be left in the hills. She was young and small and he was older and tall. The women might have been afraid of him and we do not know for sure what the women was thinking. This gives the audience a chance to think and a chance to use our imagination of what she may be feeling. Emotional diction was the final stylistic feature in the text. “As a boy, I saw countless tough guys locked away, i have since buried several too.” The author's choice of words gave off an emotional appeal to the audience because he is saying that as a kid he was witness people being thrown into prison because of race. For a young child to see something like such is a sad thing. With this text, Brent accomplished giving the audience an idea of what goes down in the racist era.

Jobs are the essence of survival, and starting one’s own business is all the rage. Entrepreneurship provides more income for the economy, and it provides a multitude of jobs for Americans. People in America are drawn to the idea of beginning their own business, so they can build up their wealth with their own two hands such as Carnegie and Rockefeller. In addition, in the novel Cold Sassy Tree Will Tweedy’s grandpa E. Rucker Blakeslee starts his own business at a young age and grows to be quite wealthy. For example, in the book, Will recalls, “So when Grandpa built his brick store in 1892…” (pg. 22). Grandpa Blakeslee accomplishes a part of the American Dream as he establishes a life for himself in the town by building his own general store, the first and only in the town of Cold Sassy. Moreover, people are always in need for a job, and some are even desperate because having a job is on the road to a better life and one step closer to accomplishing the American Dream. For instance, in the book, a mill boy Hosie Roach who has no prospects of having a fulfilling life is offered a job at the general store. Will, the main character, remembers thinking, “…Hosie would of course quit school if he got the job” (pg. 344). Initially introduced as a rugged prospector, he becomes a tender-hearted caregiver. Upon his first encounter with baby Luck, Kentuck develops a dislike for the child. However, his attitude changes incrementally when he and Luck begin to bond. Beginning when the baby grabs his finger, the “little cuss” has an instant connection with Kentuck, one that will develop into a loving relationship. Kentuck then begins following the new rules of cleanliness in order to hold his little friend. This small act of selflessness demonstrates the slow but positive change in his disposition. After this, Kentuck begins to appreciate things like nature and is altogether a more positive person. Finally, when disaster strikes, Kentuck makes the ultimate sacrifice to try and save baby Luck by risking his own life in the process. This extreme act of love proves his total transformation of self and comes to show that he was not fazed by the threat of death, but instead empowered by it to put everything on the line, even though it resulted in terminal

The simple statement “he is black and I am white” shows the classification that human beings create in a negative way. Segregation and discrimination is a major part of this story in a way that even an innocent little girl is set to thing that she is better than someone else due to the simple fact that she was born in to white

In the novel, a rape case took place between a white woman and black man. Even with mountains of evidence that should have changed the course of the case, Tom Robinson, the accused, was found guilty. Race is clearly shown in the quote, “ In our courts, when it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s, the white man always wins,” (220). Despite evidence pointing to his innocence, race won in the trial. When race is taken into account, it can blind people of the truth. A following example of how race was used to discriminate is when two main white characters were taken to a mostly black church by their black housekeeper. In this situation, the two white children were judged and not wanted by some of the people attending the church because of their race. The narrator is the person who recorded the statements. The narrator seems to be distant from the story, but it seems like he cares. The narrator was a white man who would have been looked upon better than the black men involved. The narrator never comes out and takes the spotlight, he leaves it to the people that were interviewed to do that themselves. By going out and supporting African Americans, I am sure the narrator was frowned upon.

I have had a bad shopping experience at Neiman Marcus in Scottsdale, Arizona. I went specifically to Neiman Marcus to purchase a pair of earrings that are only sold in that store. The product was a high-end pair of earrings; the earrings are high end because they are made by an artist. The reason I wanted to purchase the earrings was because I had lost a pair that were made by that artist. I made the purchase in-store at Neiman Marcus because I wanted to see the earrings in person before buying a new pair.
