Genetically Modified Organisms ( Gmo )

Another contributing factor to the controversial nature of GMOs is the fact that a majority of the world does not consider such food products safe, since “ in more than 60 countries around the world, including Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in the European Union, there are significant restrictions or outright bans on the production and sale of GMOs” (The Non-GMO). However, even though genetically engineered organisms are widely considered to be unsafe in many aspects, the U.S. government has little to no restrictions on the production and consumption of these products.

In todays society, people are more concerned about what they put into their body. They eat healthy and maintain a stable diet, but unknown to a number of these people is their food may have been tampered with in the form of Genetically Modified Organisms or, for short, GMO's. Genetically Modified Organisms are plants or animals whose DNA has been altered to favor a certain characteristic or trait which is already in the DNA. This includes enhancing the DNA in plants to make them bigger, invincible to pests, or invincible towards weeds. Although, the reason why GMO's are a controversial topic is because of lack of knowledge. Genetically Modified Organisms are risky and potentially to dangerous to be handling because of the unknown side effects

This lab was performed to explore and discover GMOs in food that were given to test. Our group used oats, a GMO positive food, and a test food. Our goal was to find out whether the test food was GMO positive or negative and to record data accordingly. I hypothesized that the test food will be GMO positive. To see if my hypothesis had been correct we performed the process of PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction), to find the presence of GMO positive or negative DNA in the foods. We first extracted the DNA from the foods, and then added primers to the DNA as well. I then inserted the DNA onto a gel using a micropipette. Using gel electrophoresis and a UV transilluminator we were able to view the staggering results.

As much as food is a cultural obsession nowadays in America, food, safety, and public health is something that has not always been a priority within the development as a nation. The Food and Drug Administration, which ensures that the food and drugs we ingest are “safe, wholesome, and sanitary” was only created in 1906 (FDA, 2014) as a byproduct of Upton Sinclair’s book (which was released the same year) “The Jungle”, which had exposed the meat packing industry for misconduct and unhygienic conditions for both workers and the meat being packaged and purchased by consumers. American science-fiction writer Ramez Naam once said, “I support GMOs. And we should label them. We should label them because that is the very best thing we can do for public acceptance of agricultural biotech. And we should label them because there 's absolutely nothing to hide”. I agree with Mr. Naam in that Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are not something the world should fear, but rather something the general public should embrace. Countries should not ban GMO products nor write legislation prohibiting the research or manufacture of GMO products as they provide vital benefits to the world. Among these benefits are producing high-yield, highly-nutritional crops and livestock for impoverished regions of the world, producing crops that can aid small/impoverished farmers, and producing vital medicinal products.

Throughout history, humankind has tried to make things easier for themselves by controlling what is around them. This has always been the case and then humans evolved into an agricultural based society. Breeding different strains of plants became something of a popular topic for scientists in hopes to getting the elite possible plants for food. Although time has passed, these practices have continued and technology has expanded and developed. Now rather than breeding two similar plants or animals, mankind has taken it a step further and can alter the genetic sequence of the DNA in species. This option to be able to alter plants and now particularly crops, has raised many moral and safety concerns.

In 1901, a small company named Monsanto made its mark in the chemical industry with the development of saccharine, the popular artificial sweetener. One hundred and thirteen years later, Monsanto is now the world leader in genetically modified organisms (GMOs). With over 1,767 seed and plant patents, they are one of the largest food and agriculture companies in the world (“U.S.”). Monsanto exemplifies the worst type of corporate conglomeration by producing toxic substances, creating questionably safe food products, and monopolizing the farming industry.

When people hear "GMO" not many people know what they are or what they do. GMO stands for is "genetically modified organism", which means that they 're living creature that made from different things inside laboratory for a certain purpose. It 's made from crossbreeding different DNA 's like plants, bacteria and animals with a little bit of chemicals to make what is needed in the world. What 's needed around the world is foods and seeds to produce them. However, these types of foods or seeds might look like the common ones we purchase at the store for daily or weekly bases on the outside, but they aren 't the same inside. The reason why GMOs aren 't same as the regular ones is because unlike the them, foods like corn or broccoli that have an expiration period before they rot or struggle to live before they reach the stores. GMO are able to survive a long time because the DNA that they 're crossbred with it, gives it the ability to survive and adapt to its surroundings so it can be later consumed by the one who purchased it or it 's grown. Although, GMOs can help end world hunger and give the world a larger supply of food, which is a wonderful idea that it can, but it can cause more harm than good. Genetically Modified Organisms also known as GMO’s are commonplace items today on the shelves of the local grocery store, or even the racks of the local department store. Technology today has allowed companies to modify the genetics of everything from corn and soybeans, to cotton and salmon. It hasn’t been known until now how many products really contain these genetically modified organisms. This paper will discuss the origins of GMO’s, the companies that produce these GMO’s, how GMO’s are created, the risks and benefits associated with GMO’s, and finally the ethical standpoint of GMO’s.

Genetically Modified Organisms are foods that have had their DNA altered scientifically to either produce bigger crops, resist diseases, and control insects as well as weeds and other crop related hazards. While the companies that manufacture GMO’s throughout the world state that these crops are safe for human consumption, many people disagree with the companies claim of safety. Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) is one of the most significantly growing issue around the world. GMOs are organisms in which the genetic material has been altered to select for certain genotype that is more favored like improving productivity, quality and building resistance to certain environmental disasters, such disasters are becoming increasingly frequent on a planet hit by climate change, where heat destroys crops, soil has been spoiled due to over-farming and famine, and bugs feasting on helpless floras. Genetically modified foods are foods organisms that are produced and have had drastic changes in their DNA. The argument that is most advanced and relevant at a period of concerns is about environmental pollution and global warming. The production of GMOS foods is contributing to the destroying of our environment. Research has been shown and proven that GMO foods have several effects that are being harmful to our environment and to human beings. GMO foods should be banned because of their unknown side effects on human health and because they are hazardous to the environment.
