Nurse Manager Alicia Hubbard, RN, MSN, NE-BC, is the Nurse Manager at Texas Health Plano, Neurology/Telemetry unit. She started her nursing career in 2003 as a LPN. She achieved her BSN and MSN from Arkansas State University. She holds a nurse executive certification (NE-BC), which is designed for current BSN or higher degree, currently holds a mid-level or higher for at least 2 years in the last 5 years (ANCC: American Nurses Credentialing Center, n.d.). She has applied to the DNP program at University of Houston to further her education. Alicia has been has a manager for total of 11 years at several different hospitals with the last three and a half at Texas Health Plano.

On March 23, 2010 President Barack Obama introduced a new healthcare system because various Congress representatives and Obama believed our country needed a change. This new healthcare system was called the Affordable Care Act (ACA), better known as Obamacare. It is now 2016, and it is time for more changes. With a new president coming into office, Donald Trump, we can expect changes to Obamacare or an entirely new healthcare system altogether. Obamacare is costing Americans more than it was intended to (Galen Institute). This essay will explain why Obamacare needs to be improved and how to improve this healthcare system. Obamacare has two types of supporters. The first type of supporters believe there is nothing that can be done to make this healthcare system better, while the second type think there should be changes to reinforce this health care system. Opponents believe Obamacare needs to be changed or ended altogether because they claim it is not helping the American citizens. Going forward, Trump should make changes to Obamacare in order to make it stronger instead of scrapping it altogether.

Throughout the last six years, President Obama’s agenda was set towards passing a major healthcare reform bill: The Patient Protection and Affordable Healthcare Act (ACA), more commonly known as Obamacare. Passed on March 23, 2010 under considerable opposition, ACA is widely considered to be the landmark achievement of Obama’s presidency, and his hopeful legacy for historians long afterward. The Affordable Care Act issued by President Obama has been a law since March of 2010. The law has its pros and cons, and it has been endorsed or rejected by those who oppose or support it. Over the past six years, the longevity of this law, many more debates, arguments, and questions have ensued to improve such a law that has impacted so many citizens. With the new president on his way into office, it has prompted the following questions, What will happen to the Affordable Care Act, and what will happen to the future of healthcare? President-Elect Trump mentioned a draft for a new concept for healthcare and he stated that Obamacare will become a thing of the past, but the questions remain, “ How much of the Obamacare will prevail and how much will be changed or repealed entirely?”

In 1965, as part of his Great Society Legislation, President Johnson signed Medicare and Medicaid into law. With these two programs he concluded two decades of congressional debate of the future of health care. In the forty years to follow, the United States of America and its health care industry experienced dramatic changes. Population increased by over one hundred million people (Census Bureau), advances in medical technology supported a growing elderly population, diets and lifestyle habits changed, and health care costs outpaced both per capita GDP and wages. By 2010, America was long overdue for health care reform. That year, President Obama passed the Affordable Care Act (also the ACA or Obamacare), an ambitious plan of over 400 provisions for one of the nation’s most complex and powerful industries—an industry upon which millions of lives depend. The Affordable Care Act of 2010 fails to fully address the fundamental problems with American health care system, but serves a necessary and promising starting point for such comprehensive reform.

Although the Affordable Care Act (ACA) became law nearly five years ago, the rhetoric overt the law and its provisions continue in Congress and around every kitchen table in America. Although the final incarnation of the Affordable Care Act will develop over time, its premise of ending healthcare disparities and quality care for all citizens is long overdue.

Health care has become an integral component in the lives of modern Americans. In the wake of the 2016 presidential election, concerns have been raised regarding the Republicans’ desire to repeal the Affordable Care Act, informally referred to as Obamacare. The ACA was originally enacted into law in 2010 and has been annually provisioned to expand its ability to not only improve the nation’s access to health care, but also to reform the health care delivery system. Through the ACA, private and public insurance has become more available and affordable, new health care delivery models have improved quality of care, and several workforce policies have made primary care a more desirable profession for medical students.

For instance, in today's healthcare environment, the issues of nurse shortage and nurse turnover have the capacity to alter the healthcare field and many of its respective branches and organizations should these problems not be managed properly by the leaders in the field.
