Congratulations to the students in 7th and 8th grade who spent a whole weekend at UMKC for the UMKC Honor Band and Orchestra. These students were nominated by their peers and teachers and selected by the UMKC staff. The nominees had to perform a solo piece to audition for seating. There were more than 25 other local middle schools participating in this festival, and Prairie Star did quite well with a whopping 13 students accepted to the festival.

I've always been exposed to music because my mom went to school for musical theatre. I've been singing since I was less than two, and I started singing in a church choir in first grade. The first time I ever truly performed was in second grade, when I sang "Tomorrow" from Annie for my entire school in a competition called "North Street Idol." I have no clue what possessed me to do it, because I was just about as quiet, shy, and anxious as they come. My teeth were literally chattering after I finished, and I went into a state of shock when I found out that I won. That was a major stepping stone towards the eventual realization of my purpose, because although I was scared beyond belief, I also sort of enjoyed it.

Growing up, music has always been a passion of mine. I listened to everything and anything. I would go to jazz concerts, operas, orchestra performances, or to a rock and roll music festival. But that passion bloomed into something more as I grew older. It blossomed into wanting to learn an instrument. I got to seize that opportunity when it came time to attend middle school.

We have CDs and cassette tapes filled with memorabilia, back when the music was "good," as the parents may recall. It doesn't matter if you can sing an Italian opera, hum in the shower, or attempt to play the recorder without sounding like a fool.
