Social Media, and its Impacts on Communication and Interaction in our Society
Introduction
The introduction and the spread of the Internet have revolutionized the way individuals communicate and interact with each other. According to Van and Thomas, propagation of this medium of interaction or communication makes it unimaginable to recall that only a few decades back when people had to wait for days, weeks or even months before receiving letters from their friends, relatives, or various agencies (3). The latest innovation or by-product from the web is social media. There are various social media platforms, which individuals find new friends, keep contact with their old friends or families, and acquire or share information with the rest of the world. However, it is impractical to ignore the effects that the social media has to the people and the society as a whole; both positive and adverse. Therefore, the paper defines what is social media, discusses the effects of social media on communication and interaction to the people within the society based on personal understanding, analysis, and conception, and finally outlines the conclusion of the argument.

Social media refer to the applications or websites that enable the users to participate in social networking globally and share relevant contents with individuals despite their geographical locations. There are various social platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Telegram, and others.
Communication has been permanently changed by social media. A wide conceptual definition of social media, as cited in Ressler & Glazer (2010), is “The online and mobile accessible services that enable individuals to connect, collaborate, and share with others in real time.” Social media has an obvious influence on informal communication style and represents both possibility and liability for healthcare institutions. As cited in Bernhardt, Alber, & Gold (2014), “Social media provide healthcare professionals with tools to share information, to debate health care policy and practice issues, to promote health behaviors, to engage with the public, and to educate and interact with patients, caregivers, students, and colleagues.” It also presents challenges, including risks to information accuracy, organizational reputation, and individual privacy. Social media can be a very helpful in communicating among nurses and other healthcare providers while creating professional connections, and sharing experiences, but guidelines for appropriate use by healthcare providers are essential. Whether or not certain healthcare organization decides to use social media as a communications tool - social media policy still need to be implemented. Policies help establish an organization 's rules and expectations around social media.

Social media is group of online commutation tools made available to the general publics and based on community interaction and sharing of content such as videos, tweets conversations likes, pictures etc. etc. According to Mintel (Mintel 2016) most prominent brands are starting to incorporate the latest going in the social media community such as trends, memes and latest news in the social media to try and connect the younger crowd and allow them to visit their social media platform.
With the proliferation of technologies, especially the Internet, social networking has become ubiquitous in the modern world. Social networking tools like Facebook, Twitter, etc. are the impetus that is ever facilitating rapid creation and exchange of ideas to promote and aid communication. Humans interact by being social, therefore sociology analyses the changes in the social trend. Understanding the sociological perspective on the effects of social media, we find that the social aspect has changed. Comparing the past and present status of our society, it is obvious that there has been a transformation which all points towards the evolution of social media. Social media has changed our culture and has impacted on the way people meet, interact and share ideas; it has changed the perception of how people should communicate with the society. Social interactions have been defined to be an exchange among individuals with the aim of strengthening the society. Social interaction is building block in every society when people meet and interact; they define rules, systems, and institutions in which they will live by. On the other hand, social media is known as a platform that allows people to network and socialize through applications and websites that have been innovated.
