Is E-Learning Effective?

As a trainer for a Health Trust it is my role to train all members of medical and non-medical employees how to use the clinical system. There has been a change in the clinical database by way of a new innovative system named Lorenzo which resulted in over 1000 employees being retrained on how to access the new clinical system to record their patient activity. The project began by requesting all members of staff to attend mandatory computer training as a requirement of their job specifications. As this was a vast process the training was divided in to clinical training and administrative training. In reflection to my own teaching I summarise that motivation is a considerable learning barrier which is overcome by having the individual’s needs met thus underlining the relationship between motivation and pedagogy. Having a craft of knowledge is how Florian (2013) describes pedagogy; Florian believes that the art of teaching is having the ability to maintain a diverse and complex classroom and to also view pedagogy as a process of inclusive practice. The ability consequently, is determined by the teacher’s individual expertise. The teacher must demonstrate all aspects of inclusive teaching whilst responding to all variances. By creating tailored E-learning packages to support outside the classroom demonstrate inclusive practice. Beetham & Sharpe (2013) have researched how pedagogy survives alongside technology and relates to pedagogy as guiding the learner through a process. Beetham & Sharpe state that a link exists between pedagogy and technology and the style of pedagogy should adapt to the change in the use of technology. As the digital age continues teacher must rethink their attitude to technology and ensure that technology is not an appendix alongside their traditional style of teaching but is incorporated in to the lesson plan. Focus is still on guiding the learner through the process; E-learning is a process and therefore needs the support of pedagogy.
