As a trainer for a Health Trust it is my role to train all members of medical and non-medical employees how to use the clinical system. There has been a change in the clinical database by way of a new innovative system named Lorenzo which resulted in over 1000 employees being retrained on how to access the new clinical system to record their patient activity. The project began by requesting all members of staff to attend mandatory computer training as a requirement of their job specifications. As this was a vast process the training was divided in to clinical training and administrative training. In reflection to my own teaching I summarise that motivation is a considerable learning barrier which is overcome by having the individual’s needs met thus underlining the relationship between motivation and pedagogy. Having a craft of knowledge is how Florian (2013) describes pedagogy; Florian believes that the art of teaching is having the ability to maintain a diverse and complex classroom and to also view pedagogy as a process of inclusive practice. The ability consequently, is determined by the teacher’s individual expertise. The teacher must demonstrate all aspects of inclusive teaching whilst responding to all variances. By creating tailored E-learning packages to support outside the classroom demonstrate inclusive practice. Beetham & Sharpe (2013) have researched how pedagogy survives alongside technology and relates to pedagogy as guiding the learner through a process. Beetham & Sharpe state that a link exists between pedagogy and technology and the style of pedagogy should adapt to the change in the use of technology. As the digital age continues teacher must rethink their attitude to technology and ensure that technology is not an appendix alongside their traditional style of teaching but is incorporated in to the lesson plan. Focus is still on guiding the learner through the process; E-learning is a process and therefore needs the support of pedagogy. A learners’ reason for wanting to learn something new can affect their motivation. A learner who is self-funded and wants to learn for personal or job progression reasons is likely to be more highly motivated than some who been “told” to attend, sent against their will or who is not interested in the subject.
Motivation is the key to supporting and advancing the learning of children and young people within my class. Motivation affects the nature of an individuals behaviour, the strength of the behaviour, and the persistence of the behaviour. There are many approaches to motivation: physiological, behavioural, cognitive and social. It is the crucial element on setting and achieving goals.
A widely observed behavior in students is their decrease in motivation. Many will label students as being ‘lazy’ or ‘careless’ with their work when in reality multiple factors are influencing their motivation to do well in school. Two kinds of motivation, intrinsic and extrinsic, are the primary influences on how students behave in school. Intrinsic motivation is very important because it is what makes students want to learn more because the reward is self-satisfaction and enjoyment in the tasks they are doing. If a student is more motivated by extrinsic motives it means they are working by external pressures or constraints such as grades. These students will tend to show more signs of extrinsic motivation, which in turn decreases intrinsic motivation. This decrease in intrinsic motivation is what sets many students apart from their seemingly more successful peers. In a study done by Henderlong and Lepper in 2002, it was shown that too much focus on extrinsic values leads to an overall decrease to perform in school because the intrinsic motivation has decreased. This also shows that intrinsic motivation is in fact what leads to students being motivated in school and in the classroom. Overall, intrinsic motivation is crucial to student wellness in terms of behavior, academics, and emotional wellbeing.
