Kent State Shooting The Kent State shooting has sadly been one of the many fatal shootings throughout history in America. There are growing rates in mass shootings in America today as we know. They are becoming more common in our daily news sadly. We have many Anti-shooting, and many rallies to end war on certain topics. This just happened to be one for the Vietnam war. .
The shooting and the day before. “Four Kent State University students were killed and nine were injured on May 4, 1970, when members of the Ohio National Guard opened fire on a crowd gathered to protest the Vietnam War.” (Kent State Shooting, National Geographic). People believe this may have been the downfall to richard nixon but that is only opinionated. Considering the fact that the dates are so close, people believe it was because of Nixon. Indeed it was a protest rally for the Vietnam war to try to end violence, it ended in violence. It was immediate caos. The total number of deaths was four. The total number of non-fatal injuries was nine. This rally was supposed to be a peaceful protest but it ended with those numbers.

Multiple different guns to end poor lives. May 4th was the day of the actual shooting which happened to be the rally day. It was on campus grounds a the university. “The following night, antiwar elements rallied again, later turning their wrath—and fire bombs—on the rickety 24-year-old ROTC building on the Kent campus.” The bombing of the ROTC building also just happened the previous day prior to the kent state shooting. This is what led up the the shooting because the students were protesting and they banned protesting they should follow through with it despite what had already
It was 11:19 am when the first set of gunshots pierced through the walls of Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. In 49 short minutes, two high school seniors, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold murdered 12 students and 1 teacher, and then killed themselves. Months prior, the pair planned out the attacks in a series of journal entries and video diaries. The attack at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999 raised many questions; the biggest one being, why did they do it? While the common media misconception is that the Columbine shooting was a war against jocks and outcasts, the shooting was actually perpetuated by psychopathy and depression in the shooters.
The Boston Massacre and the killings that took place at Kent State University occured 200 year apart from each other, but there is a striking resemblance between the two events. It is evident that history repeats itself. Both of the events were brought on by tensions between the powers that be and the people, became so violent that officials were forced to take charge, and after tragedy occurred, no one suffered any consequences.
According to Jeff Hay, Nixon “like the protestors, he wanted to stop the war, end the draft, and stop the killing.” When Nixon changed his mind and realized we had to be involved many people around the country got very upset that he did something he said he was going to do the opposite of. When Nixon declared that the U.S. would be staying in Vietnam to fight in the War these students go very upset. This action caused a lot of protesting in Washington D.C., Kent State and many other places (Hay). The anger of the students led to protesting, which led to violence, which ultimately lead to the national guard firing on a group of about 1,000 young students (Kifner). In “The May 4 Shootings at Kent State University: The Search for Historical Accuracy” “The decision to bring the Ohio National Guard onto the Kent State University campus was directly related to decisions regarding American involvement in the Vietnam War” (Lewis). Without the announcement from President Nixon, of the involvement in the Vietnam war, the Shooting at Kent State would have not taken place. The shooting was not Nixon’s fault, but I think that it made students really mad that they had been told something different than what he was really going to do. It sparked a lot of fire in these people and led to a violent
The Kent State shootings was a tragic event that had a profound effect on the outcome of the Vietnam War and Richard Nixon's presidency. This tragic indecent provoked enormous display in campus protests. A national student strike shut down over 500 colleges and universities. The protests were overwhelmingly peaceful, though violent demonstrations, including the burning of Reserve Officer's Training Crops (ROTC) buildings, erupted on many campuses. Wells, 119.
Some of the guardsmen who had been on the campus during the shooting responded with, “It’s about time we show those bastards who’s in charge.”(“My God! They’re Killing Us.” 9) Towns people told reporters that they couldn’t help but think the students had been asking for it and finally got it. Some political observers dad said that they believed the events at the Kent State Massacre had tilted the public’s view of how the war was going. A result of the shooting led to four students being killed, nine wounded, and one permanently paralyzed from the chest down. The trial decided who had been killed had not been the victims of “wanton misconduct or negligence of the soldiers.” They ordered a retrial and finally after eight and a half years the students received $675,000 which was split throughout each
Born on November 9th, 1970, Lisa Vanderbeck grew up in a very close knit neighborhood, always doing things with her neighbors, whether they were thirty years older than her, or ten years younger. One person who she was extremely close to was a friend of her moms, Mrs. Louis, who lived five doors down from her. Lisa, her mom, and twin sister would go over to her house at least once a week for “Avon Lady Day”. They would drink coffee, and hang out with the other neighbors who attended.
The Virginia Tech shooting was one of the biggest shooting. Seung-Hui Cho was the mass murderer of the Virginia Tech shooting. Cho killed 33 people and injured 18 more. I am going to explain a little of who Cho is and some information about the Virginia Tech shooting. I will also explain the motives behind the why he did the shooting and how officers responded to the crime. Finally, I will explain how Virginia Tech and campuses across the nations have changed there active shooter situations.
In a students’ perspective, the Kent State Shootings were for a horrible reason and the protest was not wild at all. The students believed that their protest was for a good cause and that they should not have to break it up. An article says, "They were informed that a ban on student gatherings had been called. They were then ordered to disperse by the National Guard and police. When they failed to do so, tear gas was launched, and the guardsmen moved in. Several students were beaten and even bayoneted as the guardsmen dispersed the crowd"(“The Kent State Shootings: May 4, 1970"). They believed the protest was under control, so they continued. However, this resulted in the National Guard taking matters to the extreme by beating and using weapons on the students. When the National Guard was called in to calm the protest, they were very aggressive and angry. They also came in looking for violence and one article says, "Sunday, May 3rd was a day filled with contrasts. Nearly 1000 Ohio National Guardsmen occupied the campus, making it appear like a military war zone"(“The May 4 Shootings at Kent State University: The search”). The National Guard came into the protest looking to break it up using violence. Their violence resulted in the deaths of four students and the injuring of many. The students view the Kent State Shootings as
In the year of 2015, there were approximately 23 college campus shootings (Sanburn). While walking to class, students should feel safe and secure at all times. Because of the current gun control laws, it is hard to feel that way. There have been too many college campus shootings that result in an uneasy feeling while walking through campus, and that is simply not okay. The violence that is being caused each day because of guns has become unbearable. There have been several different occurrences in the past year of mass shootings in different areas. Guns are making everywhere an unsafe and risky place to be. Gun control is an issue that needs to be addressed during this election because these weapons are adding too much violence to the world and are the reason for the end of
The media coverage of mass shooting on college campuses over the last decade has created a major debate over the permitting of guns on campus. Coverage of these events depicts walking on a college campus to that of walking in Fallujah. These news stories lead one to believe that it is not safe to be on a college campus. Your life is in danger if you want to get a higher education.
About eighteen years ago on Tuesday April 20th, 1999 the Columbine High School Massacre took place. High school seniors Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris committed an atrocious act. On that day both seniors went on a massacre, murdering thirteen students and a teacher according to police reports. They also wounded twenty-four students while they tried to escape before ending their own lives. I am pretty sure our entire country has been affected by this horrific act and grieved at the loss of many students and faculty members with this kind of violence. This may have not been the deadliest school shooting in the U.S., but their devastating killing spree is considered one of the most infamous attacks in history.
The crime was the worst school shooting in U.S. history (until 33 people, including the gunman, were killed in the Virginia Tech shooting on April 16, 2007)and prompted a national debate on gun control and school safety, as well as a major investigation to determine what motivated the teen gunmen. In the days quickly following the shootings, it was predicted that Klebold and Harris purposely chose jocks, minorities and Christians as their victims. At
This article tells the story of a white police officer shooting a black man in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Terence Crutcher, the man who was shot, fathered four children and according to his family was a “devoted Christian.” Crutcher was described by police as a “big bad dude” seconds before being shot.
Another significant reason why the guard is to blame is because of the guard’s actions at Kent State during that dramatic weekend. The guard handled the situation very unprofessionally and unfairly at Kent State. For starters, the guard should have never been so forceful with students over a peaceful assembly. The guard used tear gas and force to disperse a crowd of young college students (“The Kent State Shootings: May 4, 1970”). Despite all of the accusations made by the officers, there are still not any justified reasons for the shootings: All of the officers claims have been disproved. For example, the guards thought the protests were illegal, but the ban on assemblies was signed into effect until May 5, making the assembly, in the students’ eyes, legal (“Four Students Killed”).
The Virginia Tech shooting was also one of the worst historical events in history that made me see things differently. On April 16, 2007, a shooting was occurred that not only changed the lives of the students, but also changed the way I see life. The reason was because one student had a mental problem which lead him to killing and hurting a lot of students. Mourning the losses of teachers, friends, and students, Virginia Tech is now forever changed, says one veterinary school spokesperson (Schultz, par. 2). It saddens me that a person would do this just to be famous or to cause physical and mental pain on innocent people.
