In the year of 2015, there were approximately 23 college campus shootings (Sanburn). While walking to class, students should feel safe and secure at all times. Because of the current gun control laws, it is hard to feel that way. There have been too many college campus shootings that result in an uneasy feeling while walking through campus, and that is simply not okay. The violence that is being caused each day because of guns has become unbearable. There have been several different occurrences in the past year of mass shootings in different areas. Guns are making everywhere an unsafe and risky place to be. Gun control is an issue that needs to be addressed during this election because these weapons are adding too much violence to the world and are the reason for the end of …show more content…
There have been mall shootings, movie theatre shootings, nightclub shootings, and so many more examples. It is hard to feel safe while going through a daily routine when hearing about all of these attacks on the news. Each month, there is something new, and that should not be the case. There are so many deaths and injuries because of the careless use of these deadly weapons. I am not saying that guns should completely disappear, but it should not be as easy as it is to purchase a gun. There are people that are not in the right state of mind and should not have any access to any type of weapon. Also, if an adult legally owns a weapon, then they should be forced to lock the weapon and store it in an area that children do not know about. Children have been able to obtain weapons from adults in their home and that can lead to a lot of violence and death. It is too easy for people to obtain weapons and do whatever they want with them, and that is why gun laws need to be more strict and
Major events have crafted the United States and other nations into what they are today. Going from world wars in the 1940’s, to civil rights movements in the 1960’s, to extravagant national debt today, have all played a part in shaping our nation. Being from rural Mississippi, world news being made here is uncommon. We see all of our major news from televisions or newspapers, and this “news” is all happening elsewhere, far from here. Whether it is a good thing that we do not make the big news or not, the fear of uncertain events still lingers. From shootings in schools to bombings in cities, we are fortunate for being seemingly far from these dangers. Even though no physical effects pertain to me, mental pain and fear stays and leaves doubt
Forty-five nationwide shootings occurred in the year 2015 where numerous innocent children were killed by cold, hearted adults. Enough is enough with these unforgivable tragedies happening again and again. No matter what schools say about ways already enforced, it is obviously not working because since the well-known shooting of Sandy Hook there has been 142. School is a place to teach and give knowledge to students in a happy, healthy setting. When kids are going to school they are not happy to learn when schools have tendencies to be attacked by an insider or outsider. Children are dying, the future of America are being killed in a place where they are forced to go by law. Loving parents send these children in hopes to
When I was a kid, I did not think about gun violence. In fact, I grew up in a household that accepted guns. My dad, uncle, and grandfather all owned guns, and I never really gave much thought about it. When I was younger my dad bought me a little BB gun and taught me how to use it. We used to go outside in our backyard which was all fenced off. He taught me all the safety precautions, and set up the paper targets for me to shoot. I always believed that was normal, everyone owned guns. I didn't realize the importance in which they played, in our society, for protection, until July 20, 2012. I watched the frightening and horrific incident that took place in a no gun-zone theater in Aurora, Colorado. It was that day at my house that the importance of guns became very clear to me. As I watched the intense news, I saw how all those victims were in danger, and how they appeared so helpless. They were trapped, and left with nothing to do but call 911, and wait for the police to show up. In the last five years, I have come to realization the importance that guns play, whether or not it is in a gun-free zone or not. They are a base of protection, because attackers will always find away to obtain them.
An evolving and highly debated problem that continues to grow in our society, is the gun control epidemic. Gun violence in America is a national epidemic. Many people carelessly take advantage of Gun use and manipulate the tool without much thought to any repercussions. Many lives have been loss due to people legally or illegally obtaining guns and taking matters upon themselves to be executioners in holding other people's lives in their hands. Specifically, ongoing gun violence in schools have become a horrific catastrophe. It is putting student lives at risk, in a place that is supposed to facilitate a certain level of safety for the students. According to the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, there was 558 gun incidents in schools
Throughout its history, the United States has had a fascination with guns. Americans have used guns in times of war, for protection, and for hunting. Americans also use guns when they are intent on killing people. When violence happens in school shootings, drive-by shootings, assassination of public officials, or in the workplace and shopping malls, Americans demand something be done. This demand fuels the debate between gun rights and gun control activists. It fuels the debate over the interpretation of the Second Amendment. It fuels the debate on allowing citizens to carry concealed weapons in gun-free zones. This makes us ask the question: Should guns be banned from college
For example, in 1999 thirteen people, including a teacher, were murdered at Columbine High School. Nine years later tragedy struck again at Virginia Tech University where 32 people were gunned down including five staff members. Most recently, a gunman killed 20 innocent elementary students along with six teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut (Rostron 439-440). LSUA cannot be the next school to be added to this list. Schools are supposed to be a safe place for everyone and not a high risk danger zone. These school shootings have sparked debates whether or not teachers should be allowed to carry guns in schools to protect themselves, as well as students (Rostron 440). Although guns can do bad things, they can do good things like saving lives. National Rifle Association Vice President Wayne LaPierrce says “The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun” (Rostron 441-442). Politicians and the media want us to believe that more harm is done with guns than good and make us believe it’s the gun’s fault it killed someone, not the person who shot then gun (Rostron 454). My solution to fix LSUA’s small amount of security around campus and the
One of the nation’s most fatal shootings. The Columbine Massacre “ranked as one of the worst mass shootings in U.S history as well as one of the deadliest episodes of school violence (Library, par. 6).” Twelve students and one teacher were killed, and twenty-three others were incapacitated. It still remains a mystery as to why Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris went on a murderous rampage on that despicable day but the truth remains. The Columbine Massacre was and still is a day many will never forget.
The Kent State shooting has sadly been one of the many fatal shootings throughout history in America. There are growing rates in mass shootings in America today as we know. They are becoming more common in our daily news sadly. We have many Anti-shooting, and many rallies to end war on certain topics. This just happened to be one for the Vietnam war. .
Born on November 9th, 1970, Lisa Vanderbeck grew up in a very close knit neighborhood, always doing things with her neighbors, whether they were thirty years older than her, or ten years younger. One person who she was extremely close to was a friend of her moms, Mrs. Louis, who lived five doors down from her. Lisa, her mom, and twin sister would go over to her house at least once a week for “Avon Lady Day”. They would drink coffee, and hang out with the other neighbors who attended.
The media coverage of mass shooting on college campuses over the last decade has created a major debate over the permitting of guns on campus. Coverage of these events depicts walking on a college campus to that of walking in Fallujah. These news stories lead one to believe that it is not safe to be on a college campus. Your life is in danger if you want to get a higher education.
With the recent history of gun violence on college campuses, questions have been raised on how incidents like these can best be prevented. One proposed solution is allowing firearms to be carried on campuses. With many states passing the open carry law, the topic of guns on campus has become a major issue; however, there are many reasons to why allowing guns to be carried on campus would not help prevent situations like these. A college campus is a place where individuals of different maturity levels come to learn and develop. Research has shown that college students are not fully developed in regards to impulse and judgment, so allowing a student to be able to carry a gun would not be a logical choice. In addition, allowing guns on campus could lead to an increase in reckless shooting incidents, an increase in gun related crimes, and add to the difficulty to law enforcement personnel. A college campus needs to be a safe place for all. To ensure the safest environment for college students, guns should not be able to be carried on campus with the exception to law enforcement.
Another significant reason why the guard is to blame is because of the guard’s actions at Kent State during that dramatic weekend. The guard handled the situation very unprofessionally and unfairly at Kent State. For starters, the guard should have never been so forceful with students over a peaceful assembly. The guard used tear gas and force to disperse a crowd of young college students (“The Kent State Shootings: May 4, 1970”). Despite all of the accusations made by the officers, there are still not any justified reasons for the shootings: All of the officers claims have been disproved. For example, the guards thought the protests were illegal, but the ban on assemblies was signed into effect until May 5, making the assembly, in the students’ eyes, legal (“Four Students Killed”).
A shooting Monotory High School scares us all. With a sad 3 dead and 12 wounded students Monotory High is under investigation on why the shooter did what he did. The families of the high schoolers that were shot and killed have been notified and are not taking it well. Two of the three parents are concerned for the students that were at the high school with them because they don't want the other parents to go through what they had. The three high schoolers that were shot dead are Rose White, Joanne Green, and Eddie Davidson. Rose and Joanne have been 15 years old and only a sophomore. Eddie was 16 and a Junior. "Eddie, Rose and Joanne were best friends since 5th grade" we were told by the parents of the three. They said that they were all very
Bruce Willis once stated, “If you take guns away from legal gun owners, then the only people who would have guns would be the bad guys”. This introduces the controversy of whether guns should be allowed on college campuses throughout the United States or not. There have been multiple public shootings on campuses throughout America, but there is no definite solution to stopping these catastrophes from occurring. Many politicians and citizens are asking themselves the same question: Will guns make students safer or endanger them? This statement can be disputed both ways because many believe that college students are not mature enough to handle guns while others argue that they are adults and have the right to
In a research done by Cybelle Fox and David J. Harding at Harvard University, they took a look at rampage school shootings as a form of organizational deviance. Organizational deviance is simply described as deviance by organizations or individuals within the organization. For this research it is stating that the students are the individuals that are inside the organization which would be the schools, and are creating deviant behavior which are the rampage school shootings. The reason school shootings are considered deviant behavior is because they are creating acts of violence in which do not conform or meet the expectations and goals of the school.
