Music is the combination of organized audio frequencies in intricate patterns floating through the air and clashing in one’s ear. These patterns represent language, expression and unity. If you have never taken German before, you would have no way of knowing what “sprache” means. Sprache, in English, translates to the word “language.” Music, like English or German, is a language. For individuals who have never played an instrument or read music, a musical score or sheet music would just look like lines and dots on paper. Each item on a sheet of music means something different. The horizontal lines across the paper indicate the note or pitch that is played; while, the variety of circles and stems on the lines represent the length and placement of the pitch. In spoken languages, a sentence is a complete thought that ends with a different type of inflection from the rest of the sentence. In the language of music, this concept is represented by phrases and cadences. A phrase is a musical sentence or the grouping of notes to form a distinct idea within a musical passage. A cadence is the ending of a phrase, which depending on the chord progression can sound complete or incomplete. This concept of complete or incomplete is the same concept as either a declarative sentence or an interrogative sentence. Music is often referred to as the universal language.
