Climate Change “There’s one issue that will define the contours of this century more dramatically than any other, and that is the urgent threat of a changing climate.” - Barack Obama. Climate change has been a popular topic of discussion for years now, because of the threat to our environment. The world will forever be changed if climate change isn’t taken into serious consideration and not in a good way. Climate change has had many negative effects, for example, damage to coral reefs, the increase of wildfires, and most importantly rising sea levels. Climate change is happening now and action should be taken now to stop it. The damage to our earth cannot always be undone as well as making some places disappear forever. Rising sea levels are caused by the melting of ice correspondingly with the rising temperature in the atmosphere. When the ocean water rises land begins to vanish, which puts not only the risk of land not being there, but the risk of the people living there. In the article “Global Warming Impacts” written by a group called, union of concerned scientist writes “Global warming is now accelerating the rate of sea level rise, increasing flooding risks to low-lying communities…”. The people that this will be affected are low-lying communities and one of those communities is the Marshall Islands. The Marshall Islands are located near the equator in the pacific ocean and close to being sea level. Since the temperature has warmed up steadily, some parts of this dilapidated island are being engulfed by the ocean. Furthermore, residents of the Marshall Islands are concerned. Numerous locals aren’t just concerned with their island potential evanesce, but with their island their culture. New York Times interviewed Linber Anej, who has lived on Marshall Islands his whole life, attended a conference in Paris representing his island's concern of the potential of evacuating their homes in the near future saying, “It does not make sense for us to go to Paris and come back with something that says, ‘In a few years’ time, your country is going to be underwater. We see the damage occurring now. We’re trying to beat back the sea.”. What ordinarily is being told is that instead of trying to bring awareness to
I really appreciate all of the work you're doing spreading awareness about climate change while doing your own part to combat it. In this day and age, our work to change the course of our currently unsustainable civilization is more important than ever. That's why we must be very careful when discussing the changing climate and the repercussions that spring from it. Most conversations about climate change focus on the major problems that are going to occur in the future as a result of current human practices. Yet, it is evident that these changes are wreaking havoc in the present world that we all inhabit. That is why the narrative on climate change must change. Not only is climate change real, but it is impacting the earth in devastating ways at this very moment. Climate change should be treated as the atrocity of today, not the possible problem of the future.
addressing climate change. Global climate change means it is a global problem, so one nation or
As Earths average temperature increases every year, the discussion of climate change has become a significant topic in the scientific community. Human activities such as powering factories, running automobiles or something as simple as burning wood for heat, emit dangerous greenhouse gases. What makes these greenhouse gases so detrimental is that they absorb the heat radiating off of Earth and keep it in the lower atmosphere creating a “blanket” of warmth around the Earth’s surface. This causes a drastic increase in the Earths average temperature. Due to the rise in temperature, the polar caps have been melting faster than ever, this is dangerous not only because of the risk of floods and sea level increase but ocean water will become less saline and ecosystems will be destroyed, impacting humans just as much as marine life. In the article, Understand faulty thinking to tackle climate change by George Marshall, Marshall states that most people in our world today do not care about climate change because it will not affect them, “Which points to the real problem: climate change is exceptionally amorphous, … no deadlines, no geographic location, no single cause or solution.” (Marshall 2014). Because the author makes it clear that climate change is indeed a great plight, and fails to be acknowledged by people, it is a significant matter that should be discussed
Did you know that the United States is the second largest contributor of CO2, and the less concerned about it? Climate change has been a problem for decades, but just recently we start to see how big of a problem climate change is, and can be. Climate change is one of the biggest problems that we are facing right now, even if keep trying to act like is nothing. Everybody, the people, the government, and big companies are a big contributor of this phenomenon. The more we keep denying its effects, the more we are going to regret it later, and going to wish that we could go back and try to fix the issue. You going to know one day, and its going to be late. Climate change should be the U.S government main focus this decade and the ones to come. Climate change can affect a country in every way economically, destroyed …., cause a lot of deaths.
A new heat wave record! That is a title that is used every year at some point in the year. Either in the summertime or even in the winter time. The world continues to get warmer and hotter, due to climate change and the ever-changing world we are creating. Though it seems like everyone is not noticing or paying attention to the world as it happens. People ignore it and move on with their day while climate change grows bigger. The general public sometimes feels as if it is not important to worry about at all. Just as if it doesn’t exist and is not a problem. If climate change is not taken seriously, it could and will devastate our planet to no end. It is not something to take for granted, as it will ravage the planet till there is nothing left. Yet humanity has known about this problem for a long time.
Climate change is a big issue in today’s world, which is claiming the homes of many different species. Just by looking at the polar bears we know how catastrophic climate change can be. With the world constantly getting hotter and hotter some species cannot handle the heat. Sometimes climate change doesn’t directly affect the animal, but instead, its food source cannot grow in a warm environment. As for the giant panda, they are affect directly and indirectly by climate change.
Over the past several weeks mother nature has made the headlines quite a bit of times. First, it was a Hurricane Harvey dumping a record of rainfall. Then Hurricane Irma, maintaining a record 185 mph max winds for 37 hours and then whipping out islands in the Caribbean, destroying Cuba, and forcing a third of Florida’s population to pack up leave their home to watch Irma’s fury pass by. And now, Hurricane paving her name in the history books by destroying what’s left of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the Caribbean.
With the growing fear of nuclear war with North Korea, the threat of terrorism in the Middle East, or the threat of domestic terrorism in the United States, people tend to forget the threat that climate change has on the world. Many people believe in climate change, but some people do not know the significance it may have on the world. The dangers are unclear, but there is a consensus in the science world that the earth and its inhabitants need to take climate change a lot more seriously. While there are necessary measures being taken like the Paris Agreement, it is imperative that people also take into account their carbon footprint and try to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere to ensure a better future for the upcoming generations and generations that develop after that. We do not want to live on a planet that may become too hot to live on, in some places. By examining the effects of climate change and other factors, people should be open to change and be determined, not in denial of the facts not only proved by scientists, but observed as well.
Along with high poverty levels, lack of education, and issues with food and water security. Climate change is one of the many, yet most serious trials facing our world today. The world’s climate has changed drastically over the years. To be specific, one example would be the intense warming pattern that began in the middle nineteen-twenties and continued into the millennium and even into today. While, there is new knowledge regarding the topic of climate change and scientific technology, such as Earth-orbiting satellites that can help with climate change vital action is still required by the individuals of the world. In order to, prevent the danger it poses to the future of Earth and its people, wildlife species, and weather and sea temperatures and patterns (Weems, C. C., 2017).
In recent years, Earth’s climate has rapidly risen due to human activities which is beginning to significantly affect ecosystems all over the world. Today however, many Americans still believe that this phenomenon is just a hoax in contrast to what multiple studies have proven and evident temperature records which have soared since 2001. According to Pew Research Center, 20% of those surveyed still claim that there are no solid evidence of climate change which is disastrous to our current home, Earth. The majority of those who don’t believe in this phenomenon are usually uneducated conservatives, or people who are simply receiving information from the wrong sources. Studies show that media messages or tabloids have a strong impact on voters whether the source is credible or not, therefore easily swaying people’s opinion. The disbelief of this reality has already shown its consequences as many animals have lost their homes, sea levels are rising due to the melting of ice caps, and natural disasters are occurring one after another. In general, climate change is not just an environmental issue but also a social issue because some people choose to ignore it because of psychological reasons or it is more beneficial for the corporations who are making money from producing fossil fuel. As much as scientists have tried to warn people, they have chosen to turn a blind eye toward the potential destruction of humanity, and as patriotic Americans, there must be some way to persuade
Our earth is slowly dying and perhaps maybe we as humans should do something about it don’t you think? Obvious question, but yet some still seem to believe that the abnormal changes we have been experiencing in the few recent years are all natural. For whatever reason this way of thinking has gone into people's heads and really shows how easily people are fed with information and how little research and education they have. If we look at the facts there is no denying that climate change is happening. But now comes the real argument; shall we or shall we not start regulating the causes of climate change.
Environmental issues cause controversy among citizens, especially in the United States, because the skepticism within the American psyche results in denial and anti-science mindsets. The debate about whether or not climate change is real has been on-going; it is possible that climate change occurs because of all natural causes, solely because of human activity, or a combination of natural causes augmented by human activity. The uncertainty of trusting scientific conclusions derives from social issues, such as economic status, generational debt, or simply not caring. Certain demographics of people either deny science or do not care because they can only believe what they see. Even today, some people do not believe in the moon landing, evolution, or the shape of the Earth. Climate change is one of the greater evils in the world because it affects the population of the world as a whole, but people do not recognize how big of an issue it actually is. On the other hand, people are irrational and refuse to accept scientific facts and proof based on unreasonable beliefs. Especially for the EPA, it is important to understand why people resist, so they can address their doubts to help them see the dangers of climate change and how we can improve our current situation for future generations. It is also important for scientists to continue research and prove climate change, so they can explain the situation to every group of people. The American psyche consists of disagreement and
I know I'm not the person who's supposed to do your peer-review, however, I wrote this yesterday in case. I did the work, so I decided to post it. Plus, I really enjoy reading your letter, really stood out to me, because you wrote your letter to the whole board, not just an editor. It gave your letter an overwhelming sense of urgency. Very Nice. Immediately it calls for action and it reminds the newspaper of its responsibility to get the fact out to the community and elected officials, so they can make better decisions. By your choice of word you used, "I believe if 'we as a people' come together and fight this decision we could possibly help save our Earth and our future generations". Bring straight to the front of facts, that our representatives are not supposed to make decisions based on their personal opinion, but for the people. They are sworn to it through, The United States Constitution is the supreme law of the United States. That was actually highly intelligent move, to get your message across because newspapers love to write about violations of the Constitution. You point out, that many are not pleased with Donald Trump, "vowed to withdraw from the Paris Agreement to combat global warming". "Global temperatures have increased by 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit over the last 115 years, with this increase numerous climate changes have occurred including, more drought and heat waves; this effect can, in turn, create the perfect kindling for disasters fires
Climate change also known as global warming, is the rise in the Earth's surface temperatures. Even though the rise in the Earth's surface temperature may be slight it can still have a wide range of effects on ecosystems, rising sea levels, severe weather events, and droughts. A staggering amount of scientist believe that climate change is caused mainly due to the human use of fossil fuels. When fossil fuels are used, carbon dioxide is released along with other greenhouse gases into the air. Those gases trap the heat within the atmosphere. Some examples of ways humans use fossil fuels are oil, coal, and natural gas. Humans depend on theses fossil fuels to function everyday life. For example we use these fuels to heat our homes, run our vehicles, and are used in the power industry to produce electricity.
