Han Dynasty and Roman Empire have many cultural aspects including religious, geographical, and political similarities that can be compared, though many differences are also widespread during this era. Though Roman and Han political structures, both emphasized bureaucracies, they came to them quite differently. When comparing Han China and Classical Rome, many political, geographical, and religious similarities can be found, though many differences are also prevalent. Though Roman and Han political structures both emphasized bureaucracies, they came to them quite differently. Through copious amounts of expansion, both societies spread culture and earned money, though expansion was eventually their downfalls. Their religions differed immensely, with Rome emphasizing polytheism and Han China focusing on Confucianism. The differences and similarities between these two civilizations are to be discussed in this essay.

The third social similarity that both civilizations cherished was that the emperor was given a religious meaning. In the Roman Empire the emperor was has worshipped like a god, and in China the emperor was said to have been chosen from heaven in a concept known as the Mandate of Heaven. In the world of economics both classical giants shared similarities. For instance, both empires heavily relied on the mastering of agriculture to supply the empire with income and food. Secondly, both empires avoided isolationism and did practice trading with other factions. For both Rome and China the epicenter for their trade routes was in the Middle East. Both empires created complex trade routes in the Middle East and beyond and even trading with one another through the Middle East during the prime of the Silk Road trading. As similarities did exist, there were also major differences in politics, social life, and economic foundation for both empires. Empires on their outside may seem very different and unique. However, when you get down to their fundamentals, you begin to truly realize how similar they are. Just as the imposing pine tree and humble tomato plant may seem vastly different, their start from a lowly seed and craving for water and sunlight to survive unifies them. On the other hand, the Roman Empire controlled the western Mediterranean and they had various advancements in technology and science. Compare and Contrast Essay While the Han Empire and Roman Empire were at complete opposites of the world and at completely different times, they share some of the same causes of their declines and collapses. Each empire had internal and external troubles that led to their falls. Each one had begun to have troubles with taxes and they both experienced decentralization. Along with their similarities, they had their differences like the Han Empire had epidemics break out and the Roman Empire had religious issues that caused problems.

Throughout both empires, slaves were used to make technological advances and keep political control over the people. Slaves were used for such things as mining, housework, and farming. Rome believed in slave labor where slaves would do all of the excruciating work such as mining. This would help Rome to advance ahead with technology and make life easier which allowed political control to remain strong. However, in Han China, they relied on peasants. These peasants would be responsible for housework and fending for themselves; they were also typically lower class people. The Roman and Han Empires were among the greatest empires in history. The Han prospered in 202 BCE - 220 C.E and the Roman Empire in 27 BCE- 476 C.E. By the early second century CE, Rome controlled the entire Mediterranean coastline and had to use military force to set up borders against their adversaries, the Huns. During the Han, colonies were established in Korea and military campaigns were mounted in order to control their neighbors, the Xiongnu. Both of these empires had similar rises by using strong military power and expansion, which helped them both strive in economic trade. These two empires differ because Rome allowed plague to end their empire while the Han kept ruling.

When enemies were conquered some of the people were made slaves, but they were just as likely to have been buried alive. The number of slaves in China did not exceed 1% of the population. The feudal system of farming, common in China, could be considered a form of slavery. These were Chinese citizens whose circumstances left them as indentured servants. A significant difference to slavery in Rome, is that China never adopted the idea of large-scale slavery of conquered people. Slaves in China were just as likely to have been of Chinese descent as that of a conquered territory. In China, the government often dictated what tasks slaves would perform. For instance, the government was afraid of replacing Chinese workers in agriculture, so the Chinese people never enjoyed the freedom from manual agricultural labor the way Roman’s did. China could be viewed as a “society with slaves” vs. the Roman “slave society”. As a result, slavery never became the liberator of women in China the way it did in Rome.
