STEEPLE and Balance Scorecard Kevin Jackson MKT 598 April 27, 2014 Anthony Bretti, Instructor When a firm uses an external consultant to solve a problem or evaluate an opportunity the consultant can use STEEPLE (social, technological, economic, environmental, legal, and ethical), which is a preliminary analysis technique to answer why the business organization or systems exist (Wickham, & Wickham, 2008, p. 128). This analysis the consultant preforms helps to determine how the firm business fits in its external environment. The consultant can also use the balances scorecard to measure the financial and non-financial performance of the firm. The consultant will use the STEEPLE and Balance …show more content…
The technological factor, Phillip-Morris has does not have the knowledge of producing e-cigarettes. The firm will have to rely on a third party to produce the product. With the company not having the technology or the technical know how to produce e-cigarettes the price of the product can be very expensive. This has a negative affect on the economical factor, because many consumers may not be able to afford the product. In addition, by the firm using a third party to produce the product the firm does not assume the risk of borrowing the necessary funds. The firm will not have any negative environmental factors of producing the product, because the third party will assume the risk. However, Phillip-Morris does impact the environment with its current production of making cigarettes. In the political and legal issues the firm can face is very limited. Phillip-Morris will have to comply with federal, state, and local laws governing the legal age requirement for purchasing the product. The firm will have ethical issues if the packaging, design, and marketing is promoting the alternative way of smoking as “cool.” This can entice young society members to purchase and use the product. However, if its marketing, packaging, and design is to provide adults an alternative and health way of smoking. This will show society that the firm cares about the health of its customers and those who are affected by second
Those who request these services would be less concerned about the process, caring only about the outcome. The assumption based on this initiative is that “the wisdom of crowds” will come up with optimised ideas for the challenges. Furthermore, clients who are considered as conservative will have a tendency to solve the business problems with internationally well-recognised business consulting companies as they can work collaboratively. They provide more systematic ways of solving problems and can work interactively with the companies as their group of employees will work for the company with well-trained and qualified human labours while it costs more. This may result a high level of client satisfaction rate. Furthermore, there is the likelihood that large sized
“The balanced scorecard should translate a business unit’s mission and strategy into tangible objectives and measures. The measures represent a balance between external measures for shareholders and customers and internal measures of critical business processes, innovation and learning and growth. The measures are balance between outcome measures, the results of past efforts, and the measures that drive future performance. And the scorecard is balanced between objective, easily quantified outcome measures and subjective, somewhat judgmental, performance…”
We now live in a digital world where everything we use must be battery operated. Our paper and pencils have taken a back seat for Microsoft word. As must everything evolve, cigarettes have taken the next leap of evolution and gone digital. Electronic cigarettes have begun to flood the market with statics of 2 million users and 2.5 billion dollars in profits. Right now a lot is unknown about these devices and there are no safety regulations. Those who oppose and support electronic cigarettes have different views, negatives and positives, of their use. Electronic cigarettes is a controversial issue due to not being safe, a healthier alternative to traditional cigarettes, marketing toward teens, and an aid in helping smokers quit.
The 460 brands of e-cigarettes come in over 7,000 flavors. Critics say it is an attempt to get children to start smoking. The children of today will be the creators of the future. Unfortunately, studies prove that cigarettes, as well as e-cigarettes, shorten lives. Who would be in charge of our economy if children decided to start smoking now and risk their lives? Basically, if every child decided to smoke e-cigarettes there may not be a future. Due to the fact that e-cigarettes do not have restrictions on their sales, children and adolescents are allowed to purchase these devices without a drivers license or state ID.
Cigarette Companies in Capitalism Tobacco is one of the largest industries contributing to the economy of US. As reported by The Tobacco Atlas, the revenue of global tobacco industry is about a half trillion US dollars annually. In 2010, the combined profit of Coca-Cola, Microsoft, and McDonaldswas 35.1 billion US dollars, equal to the combined profit of six leading tobacco companies.(Alday)Tobacco industry is now harmful than ever. Although people realize that tobacco is harmful to one's health through tobacco taxes, smoke-free public places, advertisement bans, mass media, and health warnings, many still smoke with the influence of propaganda that cigarette companies have made. These companiespromote young smokers through the use of
According to FDA, conclusive tests carried out on samples from two popular brands revealed that there were significant amounts of nicotine and toxic chemicals that might pose a threat to the health of passionate consumers. In fact one of the substances discovered in the test was a carcinogen (cancer causing agent). Following these epic revelations, the FDA issued a statement warning consumers about the likelihood of experiencing health risks after using the product. Therefore in light of this, many pundits in the health fraternity have raised the red flag on the use of e-cigarettes to counter smoking. Here, it is important to note that FDA only regulates e-cigarettes that are sold for therapeutic purposes
Although e-cig has no clear health advantages over normal cigarette, it does have a clear financial advantage over all other tobacco products. In Australia, an average smoker spends around $2000 to $3500 dollars a year whereas an average e-cig smoker spends around $500 to $1500 a year which is almost half the price. From a purely economic standpoint, e-cig is the better choice compared to normal cigarette.
Although the E Cigs may have noble use, officials believe that companies are using marketing ploys to target youth. A certain brand of electronic cigarettes “Blue Ecigs” spent approximately 50 million dollars in 2013 on marketing. Some companies are also using celebrities to make smoking e cigs look cool. Experts also wonder if manufactures of e cigs are targeting youth because of the flavors such as bubble gum, chocolate, or vanilla. Some Officials are worried that this trend could undo 40 years of efforts to de-glamorise smoking. Because they contain carcinogens the FDA
During a time of increasing awareness of smoking cigarettes in public, a Chinese pharmacist Hon Lik developed the first electronic cigarette in 2003.(Arnold,A247) Electronic cigarettes were introduced into the United States in 2007 and have become a popular alternative to smoking regular cigarettes.(McAuley,850) Though the market for E-cigarettes is small compared to traditional cigarettes, it has grown quickly over the past 3-5 years.(Lorrillard,9) E- cigarette use has gone up from barely 3% in 2010 to 11% in 2013(Silcox,19).
The dilemma comes in when the market scheme in the main/ home country decreases drastically (Cataldo et al.,2015). Electric cigarettes are an untaxed product which jeopardizes the tobacco industry built up so powerfully by the government. At the moment there are no laws what so ever preventing the use, distribution, and consumption of e-cigs but the general assumption is that the more powerful governments will begin to “crack down” shortly and tighten the laws in order to get the cigarette industry rolling again so they can collect their tax
The state of Pennsylvania already leads the nation in the collection of “sin taxes’, collecting over $2.6 billion every year. The proposed tax of 40% on e-cigarettes would raise the cost of a product, which is often a substitute for traditional cigarettes. In addition, to this tax
This enables tobacco companies to raise their price on their products. Advertising is one of the ways they get people to use their products. Luckily, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) were given authority to control the regulation of tobacco products. Smoking may also pose serious risks to your body that will eventually continue of you do not stop the deadly habit. One of the many ways tobacco companies target people is through women. They target woman through slim, attractive, and athletic models. Another way tobacco companies get people to but their product is through and taste. May teens fall victim to this advertising technique and start abusing the drug illegally early on. The cost of smoking is a big issue. The economic costs of smoking are huge. Smoking-related illness in the United States costs more than $300 billion each year. Surprisingly, nearly $170 billion for direct medical care for adults and more than $156 billion in lost of productivity, including $5.6 billion in lost productivity due to secondhand smoke exposure. Tobacco advertising really works during 2014; nearly 264 billion cigarettes were sold in the United States. Smoking causes addiction so people need to satisfy their crave people will pay for several packs a day. The costs of a cigarette pack can range from $4.84 from West Virginia to $12.50 from New York. Not only are the
The use of tobacco is a very controversial topic here in the United States. The harmful side effects of tobacco are well known and consequently, many believe that it should be outlawed. Though this has not yet occurred, constant regulations on the industry and
The Balanced Scorecard Institute reports that in the 1950’s General Electric was the first to use the Balanced Scorecard approach, but it was not until the 1990’s when Dr. Robert Kaplan a Harvard Business School professor and Dr. David Norton officially titled it the Balanced Scorecard. Once used as only a measurement tool for organizations, it is now a complete strategic planning and management system (Balanced Scorecard Institute, n.d.). Originally, businesses looked at the financial reports to distinguish whether it was a quality company or not. Kaplan and Norton however believed the financial reports only showed past history and an organization must also track how it is performing currently and look at ways to constantly improve future performance. Kaplan and Norton established there are four business segments or perspectives to measure and make improvements on. The four segments
Cigarettes is produced to satisfy the growing population of smokers. Smokers are hooked to a substance called nicotine that is in a cigarette along with other harmful substances. Cigarette is a great product to be selling for the firm. As the customers(smokers) are addicted to nicotine , these firms can rely on them for continuous demand and they can easily increase supply. Therefore, the firms can easily monopoly the market and fix their own price.
