Susan Cain Ted Talk Analysis

Susan Cain, a well known and appreciated writer from America in the field of psychology, recently held a speech on one of the famous TED talks and entirely captured me by trying to give the audience an understanding of introversion.

In her article Shyness: Evolutionary Tactic? author Susan Cain addresses many of the preconceived notions society has against introverted people. Cain argues that society tends to favor the outgoing and extroverted and shames those who prefer to be alone rather than socialize. The author utilizes certain writing strategies as a way to change her audience’s original views surrounding introversion. Cain’s use of comparing and contrasting, specific examples, and strong transitions that bridge various ideas to each other make her argument, that introverts are essential to society, much more persuasive.

You are requiring me write about this ted talk because there was alcohol in my room. Having alcohol in my room was a mistake that will not happen again and hopefully this video will help me improve as a person and see where I went wrong. Alcohol is a huge problems and college and maybe this ted talk will express those problems even more.

Susan Cain’s “Power of Introverts” talk was all about the importance of people who are considered introvertly inclined in our society. In her talk, she described first how her family influenced her in being an introvert. Reading is her family’s social activity and that one can roam around through his or her own imagination. She also discussed about her memorable summer camp story where she has discovered the way extrovert people live and tried to shift in this kind of life. With all these changes in her life she never left her introverted life and espoused the ideas that when it comes to creativity and leadership, the society needs introverts and the things where they excel most. She explained that introversion is how one responds to stimulation including social stimulation which is different from a person being shy – the fear of social judgment.

This Ted Talk about how the criminal condemnation of most young adults are based on unfair circumstances. These circumstances being based upon race and background. Alice Goffman throughout the Ted Talk tells stories that persuade the audience through pathos to be tentative of injustices based on race. Goffman wants the audience to understand how these injustices are created and at then end gives some solutions. This Ted Talk will be helpful in showing some injustices and also showing some logos of criminal cases based on race. Throughout my teenage years, I was the embodiment of the average introvert. The pressure to succeed and become a first generation college student in my family was overwhelming, and the constant battle of not being good enough defeated me. My parents only spoke Spanish, and were unable to help me with my school assignments. As I struggled with my academics silently, my self-consciousness and insecurities grew. The fear of speaking out in public was a lingering shadow that developed more, as I grew older. Being that English was my second language, I had always felt inferior to those who spoke English as their primary language.

In Vernā Myers’ TED Talk “How to overcome our biases? Walk boldly towards them,” originally presented at TEDxBeaconStreet, diversity advocate Myers argues that peoples’ subconscious attitudes are affecting the prospering of black people in society. She also proposes three ideas on how to overcome our biases, which will open a world of possibilities where everyone no matters his or her ethnicity or race has equal opportunities to succeed in this constantly changing environment. According to Myers, the first step to overcome our prejudices is to acknowledge the biases that subconsciously influence our attitudes towards black people. Interesting. She started off by showing a picture of a baby, and asking what would most people say is going on in the babies’ head. She said thirty years ago that most people would say not very much but after many years of research developmental psychologist have learned that babies are capable of thinking very complexly and can even think like some of the most brilliant scientist in the world. The first sort of experiment they did was with fifteen-month-old babies and they would give them broccoli or gold fish crackers. They would say yum about the broccoli and then ask the baby to hand them whichever one they wanted and they would hand the one the person said they liked. They did the same test when they are three months older and the babies would hand them the crackers, because everyone likes crackers more than vegetables. The fact that they could learn so much in a short period of time begs the question how can they learn so much?

When reading this chapter she creates the feeling of unity because she is standing up for the introverts along with being on their side. By creating this feeling along with documenting her authority she did a great job at establishing ethos. Being an introvert gives her the authority to write this book for the audience of introverts in addition to extroverts. When people hear the word introvert, they usually think of someone who is quiet, shy and keeps to themselves. The word introvert generally has a negative connotation associated with it, but Susan Cain argues in a Ted talk called “The power of introverts” that being an introvert is actually a good thing. In her argument, Cain uses ethos, logos, and pathos to appeal to her audience and this essay will analyze how she does so.

In Susan Cain’s book Quiet, The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking, she writes about extroverts and introverts and their roles in our society. She gives real world stories of how introverted and extroverted individuals become successful. In Chapter one, “How Extroversion Became the Cultural Ideal”, Cain states how being an extrovert increased throughout the 20th century. For example, extroversion started showing up in schools, such as extracurricular activities, which favor kids who are extroverts. In her Ted Talk, The Power of Introverts, Susan Cain speaks at a TedX convention to highlight the extraordinary talents that introverts can bring to a society. She also speaks on how the United States as a whole has shifted from valuing introverts to valuing them less than extroverts, claiming that this should not be the case. Cain claims that introverts should be encouraged and celebrated for the power that they can bring to a society instead of having to force themselves into the extrovert mold that American society promotes.

(E) In this last page of the book, Cain addresses one of the main themes once more. “Looks can be deceiving.” The author, throughout the book, emphasizes that appearances are not reality. An introvert acting like an extrovert burdens themselves in self-confidence, reliability, and physical and mental health. Although this is the case in most people, other individuals seem self-reserved and quiet, but their inner mind is full with overflowing thoughts and drama. In the excerpt, Cain highlights the tendency for introverts to have a deeper creativity in their mind. Bill Gates, J.K. Kate Simonds’ Ted Talk speaks out the truth of inequity towards young people, especially on teens in regards of voicing and expressing their thoughts and ideas without being neglected. It discusses the challenges of teens’ voice being heard due to the societal perception towards the insignificance of young people’s voice as they are labeled as “naive and ignorant”. Kate Simonds’ stated on her Ted talk that “the only qualification to being a TED speaker is to have an idea. An idea you think is worth spreading” which she stated to be a problem due to her age of 17 which will lead to her idea being accounted to be worthless. To further emphasize her point of unfairness, She added humor on her speech saying “you’re only respecting me because I’m on this stage. Maybe it’s because you like my extremely high heels” which somewhat makes her acceptable to the society to be heard of as she wears “high heels” which can represent maturity because it is most common and norms for an adult to wear heels. Her introduction was well executed as she was able to outline and introduce the problem, thus, leading her to state her opinion on her thesis that “any idea should be respected no matter the age of who it comes from.” Furthermore, she discusses how unfairness towards teens are present in many different situations where adults neglect and don't respect her voice and it was stated that “according to a Life Science article from 2008, that because [she’s] a teenager, [she] can’t experience empathy which is defined as the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.” Also, argues that students are being looked down upon and she talks about the expectations from students such as following the system education and how they are not expected to oblige. Overall, this discusses how young people are often told “You don’t get it, you’re 17. You don’t deserve to have the control over what you learn” this statement is contributing factors to why many voices are often unheard because others are ignorant.

According to many psychologists and other social experts, there exist two major social behaviors that are widely adopted globally by a person as they mature into young adulthood: extraversion or introversion. Extroverts are expressive individuals who appear to be energized and enjoy seeking activities that involve socialization with others where as a reserved individual (introvert) prefers solitary pursuits where he or she often partakes in a favorite pastime.
