The Price Of The Pumpkin

Good Essays

The month of October is known to bring falling leaves, crisp autumn air, and of course, pumpkins. One might find themselves wandering around a pumpkin patch, perhaps seeking the best pumpkin to carve this Halloween. Take, for example, Farmer Fred - the proud owner of a pumpkin patch. He uses the method of selling his pumpkins based on their weight. Once a customer picks a pumpkin, they must weigh it and then pay for it. However, there have been many complaints stating that the customer has the right to know the price of the pumpkin before they pick it, that way if it’s too expensive they will not pick it. Since carrying around a scale proved to be a hassle, Fred decided that he needed a new method of determining the weight of a pumpkin. Using his TI-84 calculator and a tape measure, he settled on finding an equation that could give his customers an estimate on how much they would have to pay for a pumpkin. Fred decided he could do this by taking some measurements of the pumpkin, and then entering the measurements in the equation. While there are many methods of formulating an equation to calculate the weight of a pumpkin, the most practical way would be by using a regression equation. By definition, a regression equation is an equation used in statistics to find out what relationship, if any, exists between sets of data. This is most useful for predicting future data or estimating data that exists in between. To find a regression equation, a scatter plot must first be
