In William Shakespeare’s play “Romeo and Juliet”, Shakespeare presents characters in difficult situations in Romeo and Juliet through various language techniques and structure. Romeo and Juliet were star-crossed lovers. Both Romeo and Juliet were from feuding families that would not approve of their marriage. In the play they are presented with many difficult circumstances. The play was set in the Elizabethan era; there was a significant change in religion, family and politics. Attitudes and key scenes highlight the theme of love in difficult circumstances and prepare the audience for Romeo and Juliet’s suicides at the end of the play. In this essay I will be exploring the ways Shakespeare presents characters in difficult situations. In Act 1 Scene 1 Shakespeare presents Romeo as a depressed teenager that faces a difficult situation when Rosaline rejects Romeo’s love for her. This is because Rosaline is determined to a virgin until she dies; we find this out when Benvolio (Romeo’s cousin) asks Romeo “Then she hath sworn that she will still live chaste?” The word “still” implies that the decision to live chastely was in existence before Romeo tried to change her mind. For that reason Romeo becomes depressed and isolates himself from family and friends this is illustrated when Romeo’s father Montague complains “private in his chamber pens himself, Shut up his windows, Locks fair daylight out.” This implies that Romeo thinks that the best solution to this situation is to deal
Love also cannot be affected by other people. Romeo thinks he knows what love is with Rosaline, but when it comes to Juliet, all other people are inexistent. Love should be powerful enough to drive someone completely crazy about the other, in a good way. Right when Romeo meets Juliet he says, “For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night” (1.5.60). From this point forward, Romeo’s love is dedicated to Juliet. No one can stand in the way. Next, Shakespeare deceits the reader by bringing in Paris for Juliet to marry. However, Juliet speaks her mind and says, “O, bid me leap, rather than marry Paris, From off the battlements of any tower, Or walk in thievish ways, or bid me lurk Where serpents are” (4.1.78-81). Paris seems like a good guy, but he really shouldn’t interfere with Romeo and Juliet. In fact, this act of marrying sooner brings more conflict for the star-crossed lovers to commit suicide sooner. Still, Romeo and Juliet did that act out of love and didn’t listen to anyone’s advice. Lastly, all family members of the Capulets and Montagues are not a problem for Romeo and Juliet’s love. Neighbors are supposed to be comforting and welcoming, but as for Romeo and Juliet’s families, they want the other family dead. Juliet says, “O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore are thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name; Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, And I’ll no longer be a Capulet” (2.2.36-39). Just by chance, Romeo and Juliet have to be enemies. Loving an enemy can be pretty
Have you ever seen a murder mystery movie before? If so, you would recall that the detective tries to look for clues that leads to the suspected murderer. In the play, Romeo and Juliet, the same format applies, however, the murdering was done by the victims, Romeo and Juliet. With the tragic play coming to an end, we, the readers, are left wondering, “Who is to blame for Romeo and Juliet’s death?” While most characters may have a clear correlation to their suicide, the real murderer was in the stars, or in other words, fate murdered Romeo and Juliet. If fate had not have Romeo and Juliet’s death already foretold, provide hardships for the two, and mess up the Friars scheme to save Romeo and Juliet’s marriage, the play would not have been considered a tragedy.
Anguish is conceived in love and death. William Shakespeare creates turmoil through his language in Romeo and Juliet. His tragedy shows how hate and love coincide with one another. Throughout the play, Romeo and Juliet’s passion for each other keeps them together, but eventually kills them both. Shakespeare creates the conflict through his language. His use of similes, metaphors, and verbal irony set the mood for his play. The way these components flow together create the atmosphere that made this misfortune legendary.
A tragedy is defined as a “play dealing with tragic events and having an unhappy ending, especially one concerning the downfall of the main character (Google, 2016).” Shakespeare has deviously crafted Romeo and Juliet to become a famous tragedy alongside Titus Andronicus. These plays fall into this category due to the character’s fate, their flaws and thus creating great sorrow. Romeo and Juliet is a battle of power and fate as two nemesis’ battle each other to discover who reigns superior.
Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet ended horribly and that’s why the play is called The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. The two star-struck lovers ended up dying from taking their own lives, but who’s fault was it really? There are multiple people in this play that made Romeo and Juliet want to die, but Tybalt had the most effect on them. Tybalt was a fighter and killed Mercutio, which created Romeo to long for revenge. The two fought and Romeo ended up on top, but was then banished from Verona and was forced to go to Mantua. Every thing went wrong from there after he was forcibly evicted from his home town, and the cause was Tybalt.
The demise of Romeo and Juliet began when fate brought the two love struck children together. At the beginning of the play, William Shakespeare writes a line showing the readers and audiences how Romeo and Juliet’s demise was by fate. In the prologue, while giving a background about the play he states, “From forth the fatal loins of these two foes/ A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life” (Shakespeare Prologue.5-6). Shakespeare is saying that Romeo and Juliet are born in two separate families, that have a long lasting and violent feud. Out of all the people in Verona the two fall in love with each other. Another instance of the play that shows us that fate plays a role in the demise of Romeo and Juliet is when Peter asks Romeo to read the guest list aloud to him. Since Peter is illiterate he asks Romeo to read all of the people on the guest list. Romeo reads, “Stay, fellow. I can read. / Signor Martino and his wife and daughters…/ Signor Valentine/ Mine Uncle Capulet, his wife and daughters, / My fair niece Rosaline and Livia, / Signor Valentio and his cousin Tybalt, / Lucio and the lively Helena” (I.ii.68-76). Out of all the people in Verona Peter walks up to Romeo and asks to read the list. Not many people were invited to the party, but Romeo’s first love was. It was fate that led Romeo to attend Capulet’s party; and it was that let Juliet and Romeo to meet at the party. Romeo came to the party to see Rosaline, but he quickly forgets her because fate led him to fall
Relationships are hard to maintain, are they not? The couple will run into problems, that they need to fix. Romance stories make it look easy, like way easy. Romeo and Juliet’s tragedy in lies in their love because that their families have a vendetta going on, meaning that they could not be together unless they were together in secrecy. The fate of Romeo and Juliet runs strongly through the entire play as the theme of misfortune where the deaths of the only child ends the family of both Montague and Capulets paying the price for the parents past actions. As Romeo walks to the Capulet party, he presumes the future ‘I fear, too early: for my mind misgives. Some consequence, yet hanging in the stars, shall bitterly begin his fearful date’. The audience is left with a certain idea that what he is about to do, will lead to multiple events that will eventually result in the untimely death. Romeo following Tybalt and Mercutio death declares himself, ‘O, I am fortune’s fool’ revealing the fixed life of all characters and leaving the audience think they are moving and acting as according
There has recently been a horrible tragedy. Still at a very young age, of 13 we are sad to announce that Juliet Capulet has passed away. Although she is gone we will always remember the memories that we have with her, the good and the bad. Juliet was born and raised in Verona her whole life. She had no intentions to marry anybody until she met Romeo. They instantly fell in love which caused problems because there was a feud between their two families. “For never was a story of more woe / Than this of Juliet and her Romeo.”(RandJ. 5.3.320-321) The tragic ending of Romeo and Juliet has long torn at the heartstrings of people everywhere. But who was most responsible for it?? The tragedy Romeo and Juliet was written by William Shakespeare and ends in the deaths of the two main characters. Several fateful choices are made in the play that eventually lead to the dreadful outcome. Lord and Lady Capulet are the characters most to blame for the ending of Romeo and Juliet as a result of the fact that they did not establish a trusting relationship with Juliet, forced her to marry Paris, and then rushed the marriage.
In the love tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare, the nurse, Juliet’s caregiver, suggests that love should be cherished for the sexual intercourse and the fun of it. Lady Capulet, Juliet’s mother, explains that a handsome, wealthy man with the name of Paris is requesting to marry Juliet. The Nurse interrupts with excitement, “A man, young lady–lady, such a man as all the world–why he’s a man of wax” (1.3.81-82). The nurse describes Paris as a “man as all the world,” since she cannot seem to find the right use of words to describe him, revealing that she is overwhelmed with his perfection. She refers to him as a “man of wax,” suggesting that his complexions are as flawless as if he were to be sculpted from the smooth substance. Later on,
