The experimental design to evaluate the role of flavanoids present in chocolate, in inhibiting the cell cycle of breast cancer cells growing in culture.
Introduction:
The 8000 different compounds of polyphenols are divided into 10 different general classes. Flavanoids comes under this family and consists more than 4000 varieties. These compounds are one of the common components in the human diet. They are generally present as O-glycosides with sugars bound at C3 position. The cocoa solids produced from the cacao tree beans, are the rich source of flavanoids. Flavanoids are a large group of antioxidants present in the plants. Flavanols are the specific type of flavanoids found in the chocolate. Dark chocolate cosists 45 to 80 % of cocoa solids, and milk chocolate contain 5 to 7 %, thus dark chocolate is considered as a rich source of flavanoids. They exhibit specific properties beneficial for human health because they interact with many of the cellular targets, and acts as anti-oxidant and free-radical scavenger. Flavanoids also bear anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and especially anti-cancer properties.

- How did you know that Paclitaxel was inhibiting cell division? What method of observation was used and how did you interpret the images to come to your conclusion that Paclitaxel was inhibiting cell division?arrow_forwardFor most cell types, serum must be added to the media to get cells to grow and proliferate in culture. Nevertheless, serum is very expensive and can complicate experiments utilizing the cells. Many companies have developed "artificial serum" which enables cells to multiply without the use of serum. See data below. What are likely components of the artificial serum that enables cells to grow. Explain (limit 3-4sentences). It acts by inhibiting microtubule depolymerization. Which of the following is a likely cellular side effect of treatment with Taxol? Increased exocytosis Loss of pseudopod formation in white blood cells Decreased endocytosis Increased cell sizearrow_forward
- If a percent difference is a positive number, what does this tell us about the change in weight of the artificial cell?arrow_forwardStem cells have the potential to transform into any of the various cell types in the body, and thus researchers have explored how stem cells may be used to treat different conditions. Which conditions benefit most from this treatment? At least 351 companies in the United States are now offering unapproved stem cell procedures at 570 clinics. If you had a serious illness such as Parkinson's disease and found an unregulated clinic that offered to cure your illness using stem cell therapy, would you accept the offer? What do you think is the reason that FDA and state medical boards are indifferent to those treatment; are unaware of the scope of the problem or simply are ignoring itarrow_forwardThere are many compounds that have been advertised to reduce or delay aging. Resveratrol is a compound isolated from red grapes, and can be found in red wine. This compound is thought to have substantial effects in mammals, such as preventing the growth of tumors and reducing age-related diseases. Many studies have shown that resveratrol and its derivatives cause a cell-cycle arrest in S phase and induce apoptosis. A series of cultured cells have been analyzed for DNA content in the presence and absence of these compounds using a flow cytometer. Using the controls cells (dashed line), which of the following histograms better represents the DNA content of cells treated with the compounds? The X-axis shows relative DNA content.arrow_forward
- Some types of cancers are treated with surgery, chemotherapy, stem cell replacement or radiation, similar to ultraviolet light. Why might it be beneficial to irradiate cancer cells? Choose the Best answer. A. it kills off all the cancer cells. B. it forces all cancer cells into G0 C. it will halt cell division and possibly be forced into apoptosis D. it could kill off the cancer cells, halt cell division or possibly force the cell into apoptosisarrow_forwardOne example of a DNA virus (a virus that uses DNA, not RNA, as its genetic material) that causes tumors is human papillomavirus (HPV). Do some research and explain how HPV inactivates the RB protein and indicate with which type(s) of cancer it is associated. Don’t forget to cite your sources.arrow_forwardHeLa cells are a line of cells grown in laboratory culture that has been used extensively in research. This cell line was originally derived from malignant cervical cancer cells that were removed from a woman named Henrietta Lacks in 1951. They were grown in culture and shipped to research labs around the world where they have been used in many important experiments. Like HeLa cells, many other cell lines were originally taken from cancerous tissue. What are the advantages to using cancer cells for developing cell lines? Why not use normal tissue?arrow_forward
- Why Nutlin may represent a potential anti-cancer drug?arrow_forwardCellular reprogramming and induced pluripotent stem cells have allowed scientists to model various diseases and screen drugs in these in vitro models. Please select a disease that can be modeled through the generation of induced pluripotent stem cells. 1) why is it important to model such a disease? please explain clearly with example Thank youarrow_forwardLet's say that you have been tasked, at a bioengineering firm, to design a synthetic biological cell. One of the first things that you and your team must consider is the size of the cell. Each member of the team decides that it should not have a radius longer than 100 um. Why do you and your team decide this? Isn't bigger better?arrow_forward
