Chapter 12, Problem 12TYK
Summary Introduction
To review:
The number of genes that control pod color. The letter designation for genes and finding the dominant allele.
Introduction:
When homozygous parents with dominant and recessive traits are crossed, they produce F1 progeny in the ratio 3:1, which means that out of four offspring, 3 are dominant and 1 is recessive. The dominant genes are denoted by capital letters and recessive genes are denoted by small letters.

Sunflowers with flowers 10 cm in diameter are crossed with a plant that has 16 cm flowers. The F1 plants have flowers 13 cm in diameter. In the F2 generation, 4 flowers are 10 cm in diameter and 4 are 16 cm in diameter. Between these are 5 phenotypic classes with diameters intermediate to those at the extremes.a) Assuming that the alleles that contribute to flower diameter act additively, how many genes control flower size?
b) How much does each additive allele contribute to flower diameter?
c) What size flower makes up the largest phenotypic class?

Two pure-breeding lines of petunia plants are crossed. Line 1 plants grow to a height of 54
cm, and Line 2 plants grow to a height of 18 cm. Petunia plant height is controlled by three
genes, A, B and C. Line 1 has the genotype A₁A₁B₁B₁C₁C₁, and line 2 has the genotype
A2A2B₂B₂C₂C₂. Assume that genotype alone determines plant height under ideal growth
conditions and that the alleles of the three genes are additive.
If the F1 plants are self crossed, what is the expected proportion of F2 plants with the
genotype A₁A₁B₁B₁C₁C₁

One strain has purple flowers and purple stems. The other strain has white flowers and green stems. When you cross these strains the F1 generation has purple flowers and purple stems. From this information you know that purple flowers is dominant to white flowers and that purple stems is dominant to green stems. In terms of genetic mechanisms, there could be two explanations: (1) flower color and stem color are each controlled by separate, independently segregating genes, and (2) there is one gene controlling both flower color and stem color. A. If explanation #1 is correct what would you see if the F1 generation were self-crossed to produce an F2 generation. - In cucumbers, speckled fruit color (u') is dominant to uniform fruit color (u), and large spines (ss") are dominant to small spines (ss). These two genes are linked at a map distance of 20.4 m.u. A true-breeding cucumber plant with speckled fruit and large spines is crossed with a true-breeding plant with uniform fruit color and small spines. One of the F1 plants is crossed with a plant with uniform fruit color and small spines. - In a study of black guinea pigs and white guinea pigs, 100 black animals were crossed with 100 white animals, and each cross was carried to an F2 generation. In 94 of the crosses, all the F1 offspring were black and an F2 ratio of 3 black:1 white was obtained. In the other 6 cases, half of the F1 animals were black and the other half were white. Why? Predict the results of crossing the black and white F1 guinea pigs from the 6 exceptional cases.arrow_forwardOne strain of periwinkleplants has green leaves and another strain has white leaves. Bothstrains are true-breeding. You do not know if the phenotypicdifference is due to alleles of a nuclear gene or an organellar gene. The two strains were analyzed using reciprocal crosses, and thefollowing results were obtained:A plant with green leaves is pollinated by a plant with whiteleaves: all offspring have green leaves.A plant with white leaves is pollinated by a plant with greenleaves: all offspring have white leaves. Is this pattern of inheritance consistent with simple Mendelianinheritance, where green is dominant to white, and/or is it consistentwith maternal inheritance?arrow_forwardWhat if the 80 offspring that were produced by Doja’s experiment instead contained 28 F2 offspring that have green peas, tall stalks, and purple flowers, and 29 of the reciprocal phenotype, yellow peas, short stalks, and white flowers.
