Concept explainers
To review:
The experiment was done by the researchers to see the growth of plants with wider girth in warmer areas in Siberian pines (Pinus sibirica) in Tarbagatay pass region in Mongolia. They estimated that the growth of trees is reverse in cooler areas. It was assumed that with the increasing temperature, trees are getting longer and girth is becoming wider. The graphical data was prepared by taking account of the ring widths of the plants and years of growth. The conclusion has to be inferred from the experiment on the basis of the graphical data.
Introduction:
The study of growth rings or annual growth rings that are present in the secondary root xylem is called herbchronology. These rings are mostly present in the perennial herbaceous plants. The annual growth rings are counted and it gives a rough idea about the age of the perennial plant.

- Imagine that you are a member of a research group conducting research on fruit type and seed dispersal. Your group has submitted a paper to a peer-reviewed journal that addresses the factors that impact fruit type and seed dispersal mechanisms in plants of Central America. The editor of the journal communicates that your paper may be published if you make ‘minor revisions’ to the document.Question: Why is seed dispersal important in the life of plants? What would be the consequences of having seeds that simply fell to the ground underneath the parent tree?arrow_forwardIntraspecific competition is a competition between members of the same species and is commonly observed in crop plants. Table 6.2 shows the results of a greenhouse experiment which examined the effects of density on the germination and growth of barley. Plants were grown for two weeks in 10- cm diameter pots kept in identical environmental conditions and watered regularly. At the end of the experiment the plants were cropped by cutting the stems at the soil surface. Explain why knowledge of the effects in density is important to the crop farmer.arrow_forwardImagine that you are a member of a research group conducting research on fruit type and seed dispersal. - You have been asked to observe a 2m2 area of a forest ecosystem in the Northern Range. Describe three (3) diagnostic features of each of the following plant groups liverwort, clubmoss, fern, and monocot which you would use to determine which plant group the species under observation belongs. The characteristics may be vegetative or reproductive but must be observable in the field with the naked eye or with the use of a hand lens. True or false arrow_forwardRoscroot (Sedum integrifohum) is an herbaccous plant species that is found on limestone cliffs in southeastern Minnesota and westem New York. and on rocks slopes at high elevations (3,000 m. or - 10.000 At) in Colorado. In Minnesota and New York. the plants are sprawling and have -drooping leaves, whereas in Colorado the plants are erect and hold their caves upright. a. Briefly describe a study that vou could do in order to determine if the differences in plant morphology observed in these populations of roscroot are genetically based or due to environmental factors and describe the results that would allow vou to conclude that it is heritable. - About 200 years ago, Jan Batista van Helmont wanted to know where growing plants get the materials necessary for increase in size. He planted a tree seedling weighing 2.2 kilograms (5 pounds) in a barrel filled with 90 kilograms (200 pounds) of soil and then watered the tree regularly. After 5 years, the tree had gained almost 75 kilograms (164 pounds), and the soils weight was unchanged. He incorrectly concluded that the tree had gained all of its additional weight by absorbing water. How did the tree really gain most of its weight?arrow_forwardIntraspecific competition is a competition between members of the same species and is commonly observed in crop plants.
