Willy Russell creates a play to show us the class differences that existed in Liverpool in the 1980’s. He does this by showing us the contrasting lives of the two boys and their mothers. Mrs Lyons has an easy life and Mrs Johnston has a hard life and has to work hard to earn a living. The same applies to the boys as Mickey has the hard life and Eddie has the easy life. Willy Russell also shows us that education, living conditions, housing and wealth can be affected as a direct result of your class and social background. This meant that the people from working class backgrounds had a harder life because they didn’t have the same opportunities. During the 1980’s a lot of people were made redundant because mills and factories closed …show more content…
She is trying to earn a living as a cleaner which is a poor job and she is struggling because a cleaner can’t afford to feed seven mouths.
Finally Russell shows us that she is in such a desperate situation that she ends up giving her child away. This makes you feel sorry for her because she is on her own and has to cope with everything herself.
This tells us that because of her social background her life chances are limited. Russell shows us she is uneducated through her superstition. Today if a woman is left alone then she gets help from the government through income support, child benefit and other kinds of financial backing. But at this time the government didn’t offer financial help to the people so many people like Mrs Johnston suffered. But life is still not equal because many people still can’t afford designer clothes or afford to send their children to private school.
This has changed now because then the government didn’t provide any financial help for single mums. Also at this time there were high levels of redundancies and unemployment. This meant it was harder for her to get a job and provide for her family. When she says ‘Next week
I’ll be earning, there’ll be loads of stuff to eat’. This suggests that she is looking for work to make her life better. At the time this was written, people lived in overcrowded homes in the slums of the cities. This meant that living conditions were poor

Both narrators are working class. Marisol used to have a job as a saleswoman in an appliance shop. However, she soon got fired because no one even needed appliances. Then she and her mother lost income completely. “My mama and I are going to run out of money in a few more weeks and I don't want her to have to find work” (Henriquez 77). In Tobias Wolff’s 1985 short story “The Rich Brother,” we are introduced to two brothers. According to Wolf, you cannot even tell that they are brothers because of their physical differences, but as the story goes into more detail we can tell that they are different in every aspect. One of the major differences is that one is wealthy and the other is always in need of financial assistance. The older brother, Pete, is a successful real estate agent while his younger brother, Donald, works as a painter whenever he can. The two brothers are very different in their belief about what is valuable. Pete is a man that has worked hard and values what he has acquired. His brother Donald, on the other hand, values sharing whatever he has. Even if
During the workshop I used the medium levels to show the different selection of dominance and class between the characters David, the low class poor man, who only earned 13,000 per year, and Tyrhys, the higher class rich man, who earned 1,250,000 a year. I was the judge which determined whether or not taxes should increase, I showed that I was the most dominant character via the level on which I stood from, for example when we started our performance as me standing high up on the bench which showed I had the higher authority, tyrhys who stood up tall who showed respect and upper class, whereas david slouched which presented his character as condescending. Tyrhys’ tone was fluent and sophisticated with a gentle but stern tone,
Throughout certain peoples lives, life can be a bit harder than that of others. In the book “Spoon River Anthology” By: Edgar Lee Masters many stated that life wasn’t very easy for them or for some other person in their life. These characters usually had very rough lives and or had rough deaths. In the the section of Fiddler Jones to Mrs. Reece, three characters that I chose were Nellie Clark, Nancy Knapp, and Mrs. George Reece. For them, life was not always easy.
When Harry arrives at Hogwarts, he and the other first-years follow Hagrid into a giant castle. Harry and the other first years meet a strict Hogwarts teacher who tells them that they will be sorted into houses. These houses, she said, will be like your family-you will earn points for your house by triumphing, as lose points for trouble-making. They are told that they will be sorted into the houses depending on how well they do on a test. They are left to wait in silence. Suddenly a bunch of ghosts burst through the wall, talking, and see the students. They greet the students kindly and tell them they hope to see them in their old house. Based upon the talk of the kids, there is a bad house, Slytherin, that all bad wizards got into, even Voldemort.

Should being in a different social class have an effect on how you feel about someone? Even if the person has a pure heart, but low in social status? Jane Austen outlines in Pride and Prejudice the substances of social class, pride, and women's rights. Austen satirizes the social standing of the upper classes and how they treated people of the lower class. How the people in the eighteenth century and also Pride and Prejudice were split into categories by what they have or what they know are very similar.
In both of the two stories Sonny’s Blues by Tobias Wolff and The Rich Brother by James Baldwin, there is one brother who is successful and one who would not be considered successful by most. Pete in The Rich Brother is the successful brother while Donald is not. Pete is successful financially but Donald is very smart but he does not make smart decisions. In Sonny’s Blues Sonny is the little brother who is always in trouble and his older brother is very successful. In both stories there is one brother who is considered to be successful by society’s standards and one who would be considered to be unsuccessful.
