Subject: Coach K vs. Coach Knight
Several NCAA Championships, consecutive final four appearances, and hundreds of victories. These are only few things from a long list of accomplishments that two the candidates for the head coach position have already achieved as a coach. Based on statistics, it would be hard to differentiate the legendary Coach Knight and Coach K, but if one examines the masters from a psychological perspective, significant differences can be found. Even though the accomplishments of these individuals are impressive and clearly reflect the effectiveness of their leadership styles, there are factros such as personal qualities and characteristics that make Coach K a better fit to the Pepperdine Athletic Program. His ability of being able to change his leadership styles depending on the circumstances is one that Coach Knight hasn’t been able to accomplish. The unflexibilty and stubbornness of Coach Knight not only makes him a less popular coach but a less efffective one as well.
Another reason why Coach K would be a better fit for the head coach position is that he is a better transformational leader. Charisma, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration are tools the theory describes as necessary to influence others. What makes Coach K one of a kind is that he combines all these to achieve a performance that is beyond expectations. His philosophy of ”sharing with one another and caring for one another” and his principle about close and personal communication earn admiration, trust, and respect from his players while his vision about the team being a family gives players a clear and appealing motivation to work hard for each other. By not making too many rules, he also stimulates individual creativity and by providing individualized consideration, he is able to satisfy the personal needs of his players. As a transformational leader, Coach K is able to create trust which is the foundation of a good coach-player relationship.
Because Coach K serves the needs of his players very
Sports management is a really broad field, therefore I decided to focus on my minor and one of my major interests of this field: coaching. In this paper I will be explaining my personal five building blocks that make up a well-rounded coaching philosophy and coach. Those blocks are; leadership, organization, attitude, respect, and resiliency. Each of these five aspects are equally important and balance each other out. Leadership, the action of leading a group of athletes towards a goal. Organization, being able to organize a team and have a plan in order to help the team achieve goals. Attitude, it is very important for a coach to have a winning and positive attitude that is contagious to the players. Respect, there has to be a good
At their finest, coaches perfect their player’s flaws to push them to their potential ability, improve their skills, and create determination within the team. They can expand the importance of such a sport to intensify motivation and the value of good sportsmanship for the sake of not only their reputation, but the outcome that comes from it. Coaches must not lag when it comes to hardships that comes about; they must stay connected. The closer the connection between a player and a coach the better they are moving forward and continuing on the love of the sport and job.
879 wins in 36yrs of coaching, 2nd most in men's college Division I basketball history behind Bob Knight.
In conclusion, Although Coach K was originally mentored by Coach Knight as both a player and as an assistant coach; they both have adopted different styles of leadership. They appear to be almost polar opposites, yet have both managed to have done well in their respective field. As the late Emanuel Rohn once said, “The challenge of leadership is to be strong but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not a bully; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly”. If only Coach Knight had followed this simple statement, how much further would he have gone?
After reports of several transgressions and the surface of a damaging videotape which appeared to show Knight physically assaulting a former player, the president of Indiana, Neil Reed, had explained to Knight that there was a zero tolerance policy where Knight was concerned (Wolff, 2000). Despite the repeated warnings and the newly stated zero tolerance policy, Knight continued to commit transgressions that eventually got him fired from Indiana University where he had coached for almost three decades. Indiana University took a thrashing from Knight fans’ over this decision, but keeping Knight as an agent of the University could have resulted in a legal disaster. From a Biblical worldview, the
Before Mark Dantonio took charge of his new football team, the previous coach, John L. Smith, was slowly leading the program downhill. Smith’s last season at Michigan State lead to Athletic Director Mark Hollis replacing him with Mark Dantonio. His previous role as an assistant coach in the program would allow for a smooth transition into the program (Hollis). Suddenly, Dantonio was confronted with a long to do list. He must find a way to rebuild a previously existing winning culture to surround the program. Accomplishing this means finding success over local powerhouses such as Michigan, Notre Dame, and Ohio State. Dantonio relied on player development to compete with these teams but eventually he had to start drawing in talent. His tenure
In comparison to Knight, Watts feels that Dennis Rodman and Mike Tyson are in similar categories. “Mike Tyson bites off an opponent’s ear…and we call him a “manic-depressive”. “Dennis Rodman acts like Dennis Rodman and we call him “a nut” (Watts 1). These comparisons may have similar references in a way, but we need to look at Bobby Knight with the positives that he has brought to the game of college basketball. Sure he may be the “King of the rude and crude” as said in the comical comment by Watts (Watts 1). Or maybe he will continue to create off court problems. But before anyone wants to look to oust a coaching icon, people should look to the positives. Although Watts and other various critics feel Bobby Knight should be released of his duties in college
I have recently been provided with the opportunity to become the head basketball coach of Winner University. Winner University is an institution that competes at the division one level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The program is known for making it to the Final Four and winning the national championship for college basketball, this particular program is also known for producing NBA standouts. Winner University is a dynasty and is known for nothing but greatness in the basketball world. The particular problem that I am facing is that I am knew to this program and I want to incorporate my own coaching style and beliefs into the program, while continuing to upheld the tradition of winning here at Winner University. My goals
Mike krzyzewski started his coaching career as an assistant on knight’s staff with the Indiana Hoosiers during their historic 1974-75 season. Krzyzewski returned to west point as head coach of the army cadets. Mike krzyzewski was named the head coach at Duke University after five seasons at the
This paper shows the different leadership styles and how it can affect the team results. both the leaders try to motivate the team, one tries to motivate them extrinsically and the other one intrinsically. The paper says there is no right or wrong style of leadership, but a true leader motivates others to develop those leadership qualities in them and do better. This paper gives a description of the coaches and the team players who showed leadership qualities even in the most difficult situations because they knew that their team needs them. It also describes the contribution on these players in their victory. They forgot their difference and played as a team. There were no
Every year, Mike Krzyzewski consistently has the Duke men's basketball team loaded with talent and ready to lead them onto a highly successful season. David Cutcliffe has built up the Duke football program to be consistently successful in recent years. There are two clear parallels that are visible between Duke's men's basketball and football programs, that also hold true for the university's academics as well: they are consistently successful. It is this consistent quality of excellence and successfulness that first attracted me to Duke University, and has led me to further my interest in the school. It is the kind of quality that has not only become habitual of the university, but is also emanated by the alumni of the university, whose success
Coach Mike Krzyzewski was a phenomenal coach and leader. He had the most career wins in NCAA Division I history. His is a prime example of exceptional leadership. Throughout the book Leading with the Heart I have seen prime examples of the following leadership theories: transformational leadership, trait theory, behavioral theory, and power and influence theory.
Basketball teams need a coach that believes in them. The team needs a coach that will work hard to help them achieve the goal of winning. They need a coach that communicates and shows interest in each of the players. On the other hand, they need a coach that can be directive, but also supportive. In the case study this week, Shirley was quite the opposite. Conflicting enough, by all appearances she did not have a total grasp of the concept of leadership in coaching basketball. Factors that could cause the lack of leadership could be confidence or even lack of knowledge (Cohen, 2000). In this paper, Shirley’s leadership style and behavior will be discussed, along with looking at situational factors and other leadership styles that
The coach is visionary and lives life by adhering to core values. He should have very real strength of character and commitment to personal integrity and honesty.
In viewing Bill Knight, I found Coach K to struggle in his leadership skills with his team. He did not establish a good rapport with his teacher and always put his
