Critical Thinking Application
Teaching higher order thinking skills is not a recent need. It is apparent that students, at all levels of education, are lagging in problem-solving and thinking skills. Fragmentation of thinking skills, however, may be the result of critical thinking courses and texts. Every course, especially in content subjects, students should be taught to think logically, analyze and compare, question and evaluate.
Implications for Teaching Thinking must be practiced in each content field at each educational level. For the teacher, this means hard work. To teach students to memorize facts and then assess them with multiple-choice tests is a much easier choice to make. In a course that emphasizes thinking,

The criteria for critical thinking are:
1. Distinguish between fact and opinion.
2. Examine the assumptions, including ones own.
3. Be flexible and when looking for explanations, causes, and solutions to problems.
4. Be aware of erroneous arguments, vagueness, and controlling reasoning.
5. Stay focused on the whole picture, while examining the specifics.
6. Look for reputable sources.
The instructional design parameters for self-paced instruction included these factors:
1. Instructional objectives stated initially to the learner.
2. The learner selects his or her own path of inquiry.
3. Small steps, with the necessary tools introduced only as they are needed.
4. Frequent student interaction, requiring high level cognitive involvement.
5. Alternative paths available for variable levels of involvement or usefulness.
In research, there is no right or wrong process; although there are many heuristics that can be passed on. Appropriate use of information requires that we see knowledge acquirement as fluid and varying. (Jones, 1996)
Critical Reading Teaching students to think while reading--critical reading--should be central to any discussion of thinking skills. This is in part because the reading of textbooks has such an important role in the content fields. Critical reading is defined as learning to assess, draw inferences and arrive at conclusions based on the evidence.

Throughout one’s lifetime, they will experience setbacks and obstacles, as well as some pivotal moments. In the process, they develop deep-rooted values and opinions which will overall create their personality traits. What I find interesting is the mind sharpens itself through culturalistic ideals and rituals a given society may deem relevant to them. Psychology is what lets me figure out the answers to the questions developed from my burning curiosities. Generally speaking, how we interpret the information is what shapes our worldview. Attending Lynn University as a graduate would allow me to mold my optical senses and offer me a sharp vision consisting of determination and focus.

Voltaire once said, “No problem can withstand the assault of sustained thinking” (“Voltaire Quotes”) What Voltaire intended to convey was that extensive and critical thinking can allow people to arrive at rational solutions to problems. This is one of the reasons why the significance of thinking critically has become a popular issue that is discussed about in educational systems nowadays. It is imperative that students develop critical thinking skills and not just blindly be taught what to think, but rather how to think. Pure memorization will not lead to authentic learning; instead, encouraging critical thinking is what will help students evaluate problems and make reasonable decisions. The strategies used to engage students in critical thinking promoted student learning during each assessment. Critical Thinking is interpreted as actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information based on observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication (National Council for Excellence in Critical Thinking 1987). I believe that critical thinking opens the mind and ensures you to see things in unfamiliar ways. It creates a creative mindset and can lead to many accomplishments in the future if you master these skills while you are young. Children are already naturally critical thinkers; therefore, teachers should assist children in honing these skills and use them constructively. I infer that if we took an initiative to teach critical thinking at a young age and have it consistently taught all the way until the end of high school, more children would leave the K-12 system more prepared for higher education
Critical thinking is an extracurricular class where student learn to explore in their knowledge. During Quarter 1, Adeline learned several things in critical thinking that were helpful. Unlike the gifted class in elementary school, critical thinking in middle school is more complex and challenging. Many of the activities required Adeline’s class to actively collaborate with others. In fact, Ms. Francia’s class incorporated standards in all of their activities.

The critical thinking course helps you understand and stimulate your thinking process enables you to think more clearly. Everyone uses thinking in their daily lives. However, not everyone uses their thinking ability to the fullest. In a result, people make poor decisions and careless mistakes. Thinking is an ability that constantly improved over the years. There are other reasons why you should study about the thinking process. For example, college is one of the reasons. In college, you absorb an abundance of information from various authors and must comprehend complex and abstract ideas. Critical thinking is ubiquitous; it is needed in the workforce, in the school, and in life. Teachers and college professors often emphasize critical thinking is the key for success in college. While critical thinking is significant, there are often faults about critical thinking in general because of the lack of a clear definition. Providing a clear definition of critical thinking will guide students to understand what it critical thinking truly is and it will also guide to improve their critical thinking.
Critical-thinking abilities in reading instruction allow individuals to analyze, evaluate, and personally and creatively react to information presented in a text passage based on their own prior knowledge and past experiences (Blair, 2013, pg. 96). A student with critical thinking will be able to hypothesize, summarize, judge, look for assumptions, and imagined (Blair, 2013). However, critical thinking doesn’t develop by itself. If the students ae no instructed to think critically, they simply will not do so (Blair, 2013, pg. 96).
The intellectual purpose of education is “to develop knowledgeable and informed critical thinkers” (POE). The information presented will build the cognitive foundations for the students to work with. To develop as critical thinkers, students need to be shown how to take the ‘literacy and numeracy’ information presented and use it to perform higher order thinking. Higher order thinking includes, but is not limited to: divergent thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, and synthesis. In addition to this knowledge, students need help to develop the skills (knows how) and dispositions (such as enthusiasm and promptness) needed to help them be successful throughout life. In short, this course was very informative and it the most significant learning experience for me was defining critical thinking because I was intimidated by the word critical thinking. For the most part, I knew what the term critical thinking meant because I apply it in my everyday life. However, in our first assignment, I had to read to read define critically thinking several times to get a better understanding. In my own words, I described critical thinking as analyze a subject in more depth, but I learned in our reading assignments that the definition of critical thinking is “define as a set of skills which an individual applies to not only to another person reasoning, but also to one’s own reasoning” (Black, 2012, p. 59).
When defining the term “critical thinking” it can seem overwhelming and daunting, especially for young learners. In laments terms, you are teaching your student how to think for him or herself when it comes to problem solving. Instead of giving the student the answer, you give them the tools to discover the answer him/herself. Critical thinking is an important component of any classroom. No matter the age group, these skills stay with a child for the rest of his or her life. As a teacher, it is important to understand what critical thinking pertains to and how to structure part of your lesson plan around developing critical thinking skills.
