Signs and symptoms are different on most babies but may include different physical defects as intellectual or cognitive disabilities and problems coping and functioning with daily life. Distinctive facial features, deformity of joins, vision and hearing problems, poor coordination and valance, poor memory, poor social skills and difficulty planning or working towards a goal are just some of those problems.

Many women that become pregnant are unaware of the consequences of drinking alcohol during pregnancy and the damaging effects it has on the fetus. When a woman who is pregnant drinks alcohol, the baby is also drinking alcohol. Each year in the United States, up to 40,000 babies are born with “Fetal Alcohol Spectrum disorders” (FASDs) (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration). Additionally, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum disorders (FASDs) comes with effects that range from mild to severe. These effects include mental retardation; learning, emotional and behavioral problems; and defects involving the heart, face and other organs. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, the patterns of drinking that place a baby at greatest risk for FASDS are binge drinking and drinking seven or more drinks per week (Surgeon General). However, FASDS can occur in babies of women who drink less. There is no way of measuring how much alcohol one can consume before defects occur, and no proof that small amounts of alcohol are safe. As little as one drink a day can cause a baby some degree of harm and interfere with their normal development.

The fetus is not the only one harmed by alcohol consumption during pregnancy, but the mother is as well. The results of drinking alcohol with a baby in the womb can be very serious. There are a range of effects that can occur to the child exposed. The most serious result of drinking during pregnancy is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). Some of the effects of FAS are hyperactivity, short attention span, learning problems, behavioral issues, delayed development, and abnormal facial features. Studies show that drinking 1 or 2 servings of alcohol a week will damage the fetus’s development of the brain. Although, drinking small servings a week will not cause FASD. According to the National Institutes of Care and Health Excellence in Great Britain, they have concluded that, “It is safe to consume one to two drinks not more than twice a week during pregnancy”. The U.S. Surgeon General disagrees with that statement because they said, “We recommend that no alcohol be consumed during pregnancy”

Teratogens are agents that can cause abnormalities and such agents include; drugs, chemical, infections, alcohol, and tobacco in different types of cigarette, pollutants, maternal health states, as well as maternal age and nutrition. The teratogenic agents can be disastrous to the developing human being from the moment of conception to birth and through life. Teratogens can be present in the women’s body before conception take place and it can affect the unborn baby at birth delivery or manifest later in the life of the individual child.
