Operating System Comparison

In our world today there are so many different types of operating systems as well as features and applications that run on them. There are many similarities as well as differences between Windows 7, Linux and Windows Server 2008. The one enduring similarity is that all three are intended to be utilized as an operating system is meant to.

One key element of Apple’s strategy in computers, personal media players, tablet computers, and smart phones is product innovation, diversification and development. Over the years Apple has been very successful in integrating software and hardware in new developing products. Despite the struggling economy in recent years, Apple has been able to grow their market share and stay ahead of the game.

The first OS we are going to look at is Linux, it can be a hard system to use and understand, if you have not used it before, you must have a good knowledge of computers in order to deal with Linux. Commands have to be typed in on the command line, and most people do not know or understand command line text. Linux does not have a great number of vendor selling their computer or software, so there is not a good support system for it.

Depending on your personal preference and need, there are a variety of operating systems available to users today. Whether it’s MAC OS, UNIX, Windows, etc they each have their own aspects and appeal that draw users in. The spotlight however, for the duration of this paper will be placed on a derivative of the UNIX family of operating system, Linux. The topics covered will include the history to include a handful of versions (distributions).

The current hardware within the organization will support the Linux platform and architecture. This makes a Linux implementation more cost efficient, because the Linux operating system is open source, allowing licensing for the operating system to be almost free, and maintenance quite minimal in cost, when compared to its Widows competitor. The implementation of Linux within the organization can also accommodate the use of several of their Windows based applications.

When considering which operating system for a home or business office computer or network of computers, it is important to evaluate all areas of the different operating systems options. When evaluating Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows Server 2008, and Linux operating systems it is important to consider the system requirements, the different editions available, security features, system features, updates and support, user interface, and cost effectiveness. Depending on what a person’s or organization’s needs are will determine which operating system is best fit.

We decided to look at another Operation System (OS) besides Windows 2003. The Linux OS is an open sourced system and can be adapted to work with-in a multi-platform environment. First we looked at the fact that company wide we would have UNIX, Microsoft, and Linux if we went in this direction.

It emphasizes the features in these two operating system such as history, cost, security, user-friendliness, performance, and future trends. It shows how impactful these features can be when an enterprise chooses an operating system. The research in this paper highlights the pros and cons of an enterprise using one operating system or the other. It directs the readers to have a better understanding on which operating system is better for specific instances. Readers will have an enhance perception on Windows and Linux and the platforms they serve. In our paper we try to fully analyze Windows and Linux’s operating system, so an enterprise can choose the best operating system for themselves.

There are many operating systems in use today, a few examples are Windows 95/98, Windows NT, MS-DOS, UNIX and one you may not have heard of, LINUX. The focuses of this report are the operating systems UNIX and LINUX, two very interesting and powerful systems. The world has come a long way with its development of technology. Day-by-day the people who are using and relying on technology have dramatically increased. But out of all these new technologies, the computer is probably one of the most important, if not the most. And two operating systems have been competing with each other from the beginning. These two companies are Apple with their Mac and Microsoft with their Windows PC. Although both Apple and Microsoft have created great machines they differ when it comes down to price, design and operating system, and popularity.

In the next coming months, Sojourner Inc. plans on implementing an operating system migration. Our desktops are still running on Windows XP. Needless to say it is time for an upgrade in operating systems. The IT department looked at 3 different operating systems: Microsoft’s Windows 8.1, Apple’s Mac OS X Yosemite, and Linux’s Ubuntu. The categories analyzed were compatibility, ease of use/transition, security, stability, technical support, and cost.
