On April 4, I watched the TED Talk of Susan Cain, a writer. She claimed that introverts are not shy or antisocial. Specifically she claimed that introverts are not inferior to anyone just because they want to work alone. As she said, “Introverts feel at their most alive ….. and their most capable when they’re in quieter, more low-key environment.” Although some people believe that introverts like to work individually because they are shy, Cain insisted that they do that because that's how they bring out their full potential and be more creative. She stated that it's everyone's loss when introverts are told that what they are doing should not be done in this society to support that introverts have their own way of doing things which makes them
Susan Cain, a well known and appreciated writer from America in the field of psychology, recently held a speech on one of the famous TED talks and entirely captured me by trying to give the audience an understanding of introversion.
Susan Cain’s Ted Talk The Power Of Introverts brought a new conversation to society in how introverts are treated. Five years ago (when this took place) this topic was not very well discussed, which made this piece very eye opening for some. Using Aristotle's appeals: logos and pathos, as well as a comparative argument in her ted talk, Cain persuades viewers that we as a society oppress/shame introverts, not allowing them to strive or be themselves in our now extroverted society. She advocates for a more balanced society that serves both introverts and extroverts instead of just extroverts.
Leslie A. Gordon describes an introvert as a person who is unwilling to speak out thoughts or feelings freely. She further says," introverts gain energy from quiet reflection and solitude. They tend to think before they speak, take a deliberate approach to risk and prefer listening. While not necessarily shy or anxious in social settings, they're usually not comfortable in groups. Introverts are energized by focusing deeply on a subject or activity that truly interests them and may become overwhelmed in stimulating environments”(Gordon). She means that introverts can be described as shy and spend most of their time alone. They don’t like being around people, especially large crowds. They are mistakenly judged as individuals
In her article Shyness: Evolutionary Tactic? author Susan Cain addresses many of the preconceived notions society has against introverted people. Cain argues that society tends to favor the outgoing and extroverted and shames those who prefer to be alone rather than socialize. The author utilizes certain writing strategies as a way to change her audience’s original views surrounding introversion. Cain’s use of comparing and contrasting, specific examples, and strong transitions that bridge various ideas to each other make her argument, that introverts are essential to society, much more persuasive.

In the essay, “Shyness: Evolutionary Tactic?” Susan Cain, the author clear her point and tell the readers the difference between shyness and introverts, stitter and rovers and she has also given great example that prove her point and which make the essay clear by the examples.In the essay the author, Susan Cain, have used so many rhetorical strategies which makes the essay more clear and more understanding but the main three strategies which was used by the author in this essay, and which was perfectly used was definitions, facts and compare and contrast.
Susan Cain’s “Power of Introverts” talk was all about the importance of people who are considered introvertly inclined in our society. In her talk, she described first how her family influenced her in being an introvert. Reading is her family’s social activity and that one can roam around through his or her own imagination. She also discussed about her memorable summer camp story where she has discovered the way extrovert people live and tried to shift in this kind of life. With all these changes in her life she never left her introverted life and espoused the ideas that when it comes to creativity and leadership, the society needs introverts and the things where they excel most. She explained that introversion is how one responds to stimulation including social stimulation which is different from a person being shy – the fear of social judgment.
An introvert person is usually someone who enjoys solitude rather than spending time with a group of people. Introverts are often known for being able to “recharge” on their own, rather than recharging by socializing. Extroverts usually gain energy from spending time with other people. For many introverts, being in a social surrounding and spending a lot of time around people can be exhausting, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t like people. It means they choose not to be surrounded by others. But why do introverts want to be alone? Is it because they lack social skills or social interest? Or maybe they create a protective wall where they don’t let people in.
The article “Introversion: The Often Forgotten Factor Impacting the Gifted” by Jill D. Burruss and Lisa Kaenzig begins by giving examples of how an introvert may behave. The authors continue by explaining that introversion is in not an issue, but a personality type which differs from that of the “normal,” more outgoing and friendly personality type, extroversion. Introverts and extroverts are different personality types, most people fall into one of the two categories. Typically, an introvert’s main focus is in the internal world of thoughts, while an extrovert's main focus is on the external world of people and events. When people hear the word introvert, they usually think of someone who is quiet, shy and keeps to themselves. The word introvert generally has a negative connotation associated with it, but Susan Cain argues in a Ted talk called “The power of introverts” that being an introvert is actually a good thing. In her argument, Cain uses ethos, logos, and pathos to appeal to her audience and this essay will analyze how she does so.
In Quiet, Cain classifies introversion as a temperament that prefers low stimulation, works slowly and deliberately, and gain energy from solitude; extroversion is the opposite, with an inclination for high stimulation, fast living, and constant socializing. In Part One: The Extrovert Ideal, Cain examines the cause and effect of the rise of extroversion in America. According to Cain, America used to be a culture based on character that shifted into a culture revolving around personality. Not just any personality, the American ideal became a gregarious, friendly persona that was an eloquent speaker and sparkling individual. Cain researched a vastly successful individual, Harvard Business School, and an evangelical megachurch with similar results and observations: it was assumed that to be a leader and make any headway in life, one must be an extrovert. However, neither introvert nor extrovert is more suited to leadership, but rather it depends on other factors unique to each situation. Extroversion does not make one a better leader, or a success. In fact, introversion has a key strength when it comes to leadership and the workplace: introverts have the ability to master a skill, focus on one project until fruition, and basically spend hours achieving better results than the more flighty extrovert. An introvert acting like an extrovert burdens themselves in self-confidence, reliability, and physical and mental health. Although this is the case in most people, other individuals seem self-reserved and quiet, but their inner mind is full with overflowing thoughts and drama. In the excerpt, Cain highlights the tendency for introverts to have a deeper creativity in their mind. Bill Gates, J.K. Susan Cain, an American writer and lecturer and an author of the renowned book “Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can`t Stop Talking”(“Susan Cain,” 2016). She argues in her book that this modern age devalues and misapprehends the proficiencies that introverts bring to the world. In addition, she believes that the best works that the world has ever seen were made by introverts. In other words, she adds on that groups or cooperates inventions are not ads on the invention. Examples of introverts that have shocked the world with their inventions are Leonardo da Vinci i.e. the world’s best artist, Steve Jobs i.e. the founder of Apple and much more.

Introversion was defined as “withdrawn and often shy, and they tend to focus on themselves, on their own thoughts and feelings” (Jung, 1923) Therefore focusing on this personality trait can help to better understand why people tend to be reserved and withdrawn from everyday life. Carl Jung was the creator of the neopsychoanalytical approach, which focused on psychic energy. While Gordon Allport and Hans Eysenck contributor to the trait theory, focused on biology and individualized traits. Jung, Eysenck and Allport focused on extrovert vs. introvert, yet had completely different ideas of how introversion is seen in everyday life. Personally believeing this trait is one I carry, focusing on completely different approaches will bring light to many explanations of why people act the way they do, including myself. By using both case studies and personal work from the works of Jung, Eysenck, and Allport researching introversion should not be a an issue. Although there is a lot of work to do with introversion, through this research one can get a better overview.
