This essay will consider Standard bank as one of the organisations which have been visited during the development informatics programs student field trip in January 2017. The essay is in four parts, which provide the information about organisation’s background, problems that occurred in it, what should be indicated for the future research and how it could be done.
1. Background
Standard bank is one of the core banks in South Africa, which was formed in 1862. It operates throughout different countries in the world with more than 45 000 employees working for it. This wide geographical allocation is reflected in its strategy to connect capitals and people of these markets (Standard bank, 2015).
Standard Bank has a mission to make a

However, despite such a positive intention, there are problems in the process of its implementation as CRM part of the SAP platform has not been implemented so far, thus nowadays Standard bank are not able to achieve stated goals (Ferley, 2017). Therefore the further research is needed to be conducted to identify why it is happening in such a way.
2. Research Problem Statement
The research problem could be considered as a gap between the desired SAP platform implementation indicators and the current ones.
During the process of SAP implementation Standard Bank was faced with an escalation of the project’s time frame and budget. Initially launched in 2007, the project was restarted in 2010. At the moment of the field trip in January 2017, it has been postponed to the third quarter of 2017, which means the escalation of the overall project’s schedule in 40 percent and budget in 2,25 times (from R 8bn to R 18bn) (Ferley, 2017).
However, nowadays we still are not able to predict the real outcome of the project- whether it will be a success or a failure and why.
The SAP implementation project team has investigated major problems when they initially have been dealing with a waterfall approach, for example, the out-of-date information about system requirements, wrong resources allocation and isolated business process. Therefore, they shifted to the agile approach, suggesting it will cope with the arisen difficulties more efficiently (Ferley, 2017).
Therefore, it can be concluded that the earlier research that has been done has limitations that qualify our findings and present opportunities for further research. Not much research has been done about the need of CRM in improving the performance of banks and creating a better relationship with customers. For this reason, this research has been done so that more insights into the topic could be identified. Moreover, the earlier research done on this topic could be used as an important tool for further research.
The IT staffs were certain that the existing SAP software will provide all necessary computer support. They believed that even if the SAP would not fit their business processes precisely, it may be an investment that provides greater long-term flexibility and better solutions to the company’s problem.

Cost and resource needs are higher for traditional than Agile due to Waterfall’s sequential development phase of all requirements determined in the beginning, software design and finally implementation of master design. The need for all information up front takes substantial time to gather and the sequential design does not allow for project changes as the flow enters into the programming stage. With Agile, costs remain low because there exists an incremental and iterative approach to the project, meaning less time is used to collect all requirements up front, the
Agile processes do not devote much time up front to formal system specifications, but rather relies on continuous communication with the customer throughout the development process. The process accounts for the fact that needs often change or cannot be fully developed early on and is flexible to this. (+)

There is a cross section of projects ranging from a few weeks to a few years. There are also a wide cross section of customers, those capable of articulating clearly their requirements and the ones that are not clear on their requirements and the overall outcome to be achieved. The level of programmers within the Information Technology Department, where development work is executed, range from intermediate to advance or above average programming competence. The Waterfall approach is easier to manage and can be utilized for projects where there are clear requirements and the project is determined to be a long term one. Also, this method may be best suited given the organization’s requirements for thorough documentation and project accountability, when it comes to budget and cost. The Agile methodology can be used for projects where the requirements as well as the expectation from the end product are not as clear. The developers that are above average in terms of their competence can also use this method. In addition, the Agile method is also best suited for the projects that would require rapid
From my perspective, though not being privy to a genuine cost analysis, yet being well versed in areas that do impact our financial well-being – most notably where challenges in back-end scenarios could be met more immediately and internally rather than hired out and realized on an external vendor’s own timeline – I will provide an analysis that clearly displays the benefits of agile methodology over our current use of waterfall. With this essay, I intend to provoke change, though I do understand that further consideration and discussion will be required prior to any realization of meaningful change.
SAP is a leader in the Global Business Software market and in this case study we will examine their strategies both the successes and failures.
