Summary Introduction

To review:

The significance of the evolution of chemical synapses that make higher brain functioning possible.

Introduction:

Synapse is a small gap between two neurons. This space is involved in communication between two neurons. There are two types of synapses: chemical synapse in which physical gap is present between two neurons and electrical synapse in which the plasma membrane of two neurons are joined together by a site called gap-junction.

Construct a unit concept map to show the relationships among the following set of terms: action potential, arbor vitae, brainstem, diencephalon, epineurium, gray matter, lateral horn, nerve fiber, node of Ranvier, synaptic cleft
Schwann cells are a type of glial cell found in the nervous system. In addition to the conduction of nerve impulses, the outermost layer called neurilemma aids in nerve development and regeneration. After examining the image below, can you explain why brain cells have limited capacity for regeneration? Human Brain Cross Section. Rajalakshmi L Nair et al. Select one: a. Neurons in the central nervous system lack neurilemma of Schwann cells. b. Neurons in the central nervous system are surrounded by white matter. c. Axons of the peripheral nervous system lack neurilemma of Schwann cells. d. Neurons in the peripheral nervous system are surrounded by grey matter.
Consider the circuit from Q5 (above). We want to add another inhibitory neuron to this circuit to increase the likelihood that neuron D will have an action potential. With which cell (A, B, C or D) should our new inhibitory neuron make a synapse to make it more likely that the post - synaptic neuron will have anaction potential? The diagram below shows a simple neural circuit with three pre - synaptic cells labelled 'A', 'B' and 'C', and a post - synaptic cell labelled 'D ' (see image below). Assume neurons A and B each have outputs of +2 and neuron C has output of -1.
