INTRO Genetically modified organisms are genetically modified organisms. If you look in the average American cupboard many of the packages found there contain foods that have been genetically modified. Some researchers believe that people need to be more aware of the genetically altering chemicals put in their body. Consumers should be limiting the amount of genetically modified foods in their daily diet.

Several of the rats developed stomach lesions and seven out of 40 died within two weeks. Scientists at the FDA who reviewed the study agree that it did not provide a “demonstration of reasonable certainty of harm.” In fact, agency scientists warned that genetically modified foods in general might create unpredictable allergies, toxins, antibiotic resistant diseases, and nutritional problems. Internal FDA memos made public from a lawsuit reveal that the scientists urged their superiors to require long-term safety testing to catch these hard-to-detect side effects. But FDA political appointees, including a former attorney for Monsanto in charge of policy, ignored the scientists’ warnings. The FDA does not require safety studies. Instead, if the makers of the genetically modified foods claim that they are safe, the agency has no farther questions. The genetically modified tomato was approved in 1994.”(Smith).

The human body is not designed to handle all the toxins that are put into GMO products, and as consumers, we should be informed of the potential harm we are putting into our bodies. Helke Ferrie, in his article “Evidence Grows of Harmful Effects of GMOs on Human Health” states, “…all modern human diseases are being caused by environmental toxins of our own making” (12), on the contrary, in the journal “GMOs – A solution or a Problem”, Mark Lynas claims that “… there has never been a single sustained health concern [caused by GMOs]” (132). Ferrie mentions multiple studies where GMOs have proven to “…increase the incidence of cancer, diabetes, hormone disruption, neurological, immunological and other metabolic disorders” (12). The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a difference between adult returning students and traditional aged students regarding their perceptions of the health risks associated with Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) foods among students attending a small, Midwestern college. At this time, no empirical research has been found that have studied the perceptions of health risks associated with GMO foods among students in a small, Midwestern college. This lab was performed to explore and discover GMOs in food that were given to test. Our group used oats, a GMO positive food, and a test food. Our goal was to find out whether the test food was GMO positive or negative and to record data accordingly. I hypothesized that the test food will be GMO positive. To see if my hypothesis had been correct we performed the process of PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction), to find the presence of GMO positive or negative DNA in the foods. We first extracted the DNA from the foods, and then added primers to the DNA as well. I then inserted the DNA onto a gel using a micropipette. Using gel electrophoresis and a UV transilluminator we were able to view the staggering results.

Recently, there has been multiple studies regarding whether or not GMOs are safe for human and animal consumption, and the results are extremely negative (“5 Reasons NOT to Eat Genetically Modified Foods”). From these tests, researchers have found birth defects, sterility, organ damage, gastrointestinal disorder, gut rot, new allergies, accelerating aging, infertility and immune system disorder in rats (“Smith”, “5 Reasons NOT to Eat Genetically Modified Foods”). These tests are not only done on rats. Glyphosate, a substance in Roundup, caused “total cell death in human umbilical, embryo, and placental cells within twenty-four hours” (“5 Reasons NOT to Eat Genetically Modified Foods”). Therefore, Genetically Modified Organisms have been proven to be extremely dangerous to our health. Lastly, “After GMOs were introduced in 1966, the percentage of Americans with more than three chronic illnesses went from seven percent to thirteen percent in nine years” (“Smith”). Additionally, “food allergies skyrocketed, and disorders like autism, reproductive disorders, and digestive problems are on the rise” (“Smith”). Genetically Modified Organisms cause extreme damage on our bodies and should be banned.

GMO are able to survive a long time because the DNA that they 're crossbred with it, gives it the ability to survive and adapt to its surroundings so it can be later consumed by the one who purchased it or it 's grown. Although, GMOs can help end world hunger and give the world a larger supply of food, which is a wonderful idea that it can, but it can cause more harm than good. But like most controversy scapegoats are necessary because most people do not like difficult investigations that call for heavy research or reading. Although the food supply has rules, regulations and safety procedures on how to treat the food, clean it and remove harmful food-borne illness; mishaps in the procedures can lead to food-borne illnesses that can not only damage our health, but can also be fatal. So why are consumers being misled by products and instinctively misguided? The very process of creating a GM plant can result in guaranteed damages; they will produce new toxins, allergens, carcinogens, and nutritional deficiencies. However, scientists in the biotechnology industry have come up with a new way to genetically alter foods and other products, by producing GMOs. An acronym for Genetically Modified Organisms, GMOs are organisms that have been genetically modified to show only the desirable traits when they mature. To produce what they call, “transgenic plants”, scientists use recombinant DNA technology (JRSM). They can do this by isolating a gene that produces a specific trait from one organism and splice it into a chromosome from another organism, giving that organism the trait that the first organism originally possessed (PBS). Scientists at Cornell University discovered a way to splice genes into the chromosomes of plants, and that is by using a “Gene Gun” (PBS). Using compressed gas, the “Gene Gun” expels many of the same genes adhered to microscopic balls at a plant. When the balls pass through the plant, some genes stick to the cells of the plant, producing cells that can be grown in culture to produce a “transgenic plant” (PBS).
