Non-profits Organizations and the Need to be Financially Sound
The African Entrepreneur Collective is a 501(c)(3) company that has a commendable and admirable social mission. Essentially their goal is to create jobs in Rwanda, Africa. They believe that the best method to accomplish this is to help the entrepreneurs who are already creating jobs, create more of them. They primarily receive their funding from government grants and private foundations, but they also accept personal donations. Their reliance on these grants and foundations makes the people in charge of retaining and finding new sponsorships extremely vital to the company, and therefore they wield substantially

While this has surely benefitted the people who got the jobs, it equates to only 175 jobs per year and is a very small number overall. One factor that this organization does not take into account, that further dilutes its effectiveness, is the number of jobs that these entrepreneurs would have created regardless of the company’s involvement. The only true benefit provided would be the additional jobs that would be gained from using the company’s service, not the total jobs these entrepreneurs added.
I cannot find any financial reports from 2012, and since the African Entrepreneur Collective received their 501(c)(3) status in 2013, Guidestar.org does not have this information either. However from 2013-2016 total income was $1,464,414 ($1,875,943 total income minus the $411,529 in retained earnings that can be utilized in the future). This means that the company needs to raise/earn $2,092.02 per job created, hardly an impressive figure. That number is assuming all 700 of these jobs would not have been created without the company’s help, and that is a highly doubtful conclusion at best.
The African Entrepreneur Collective primarily relies on grants, foundations, and private donors to survive ($813,764 or 83.4% of their total income in 2016). The largest grants come from the United States Agency of International Development (USAID) and other international development agencies such as Global Giving UK and the
Until spending time in the nonprofit program at Johnson, I never considered the many different tasks associated with starting a nonprofit. Additionally, through growing up at a long-established nonprofit, I took for granted the work involved in establishing it as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The IRS website provides explanation for the many these required tasks needed to file for tax-exemption status. Filing the articles of incorporation and establishing bylaws remain crucial for an organization to receive recognition as a legal entity. However, establishing a nonprofit involves a great deal more than simply attaining tax-exemption status. Tschirhart and Bielefeld highlight many of these aspects, such as developing the mission and vision statements of the organization (Tschirhart and Bielefeld 49). As the reading from last week discussed, evaluating and acquiring resources for an organization should stem from the mission of an organization. Even more so, in order for that to take place, the organization needs established with a mission that will keep it rooted in its cause and a vision
There is a non-profit organization located in Greenville NC called, The Junior Women’s Association of Greenville, NC. They have a board of directors in addition to members of the organization. They state on their website, http://www.jwagreenville.org/ , that this organization is comprised “of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective leadership of trained volunteers.” I feel that in order to serve with full potential on any board of directors one must feel a real passion for the goal of the organization. I do truly support what this organization stands for and believe that it can help make Greenville a better place. They partner with Association of Junior
The first policy alternative to consider is one suggested by Laura Cox Kaplan, a professor at American University and Co-Chair board member of the organization Running Start. Running Start is a non-profit organization that has the prime goal of combating the gender gap among elected officials and in Congress by motivating young women and giving them the skills that they need to thrive in their work environment (Kaplan, 2017). Kaplan’s suggests that organizations like Running Start can be used to close the gender wage gap both in the government and private sector (2017). The policy alternative would be to create and increase organizations that work closely with young women and provide them with skills needed to succeed in their careers, increase
The ability to convey financial information in a simplified manner without hiding or misrepresenting the financial standing can be challenging. There are many different types of nonprofit organizations and each meets a specific need. I work for an organization that began serving a particular population of homeless individuals in Jacksonville Florida in 1972. We have grown, changed and adapted over the years, which has been determined by data, changes in need, and governmental indicators. This nonprofit has grown from a small, two-person organization to an agency employing thirty full time employees. As a result, capacity has increased, as well as funding of which is now approximately $7 million in Federal and State grants serving Northeast Florida. These funds need to be represented in a financial statement that is consistent with regulations that have been established for nonprofits. The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) is an
To reduce suffering in the world and advocate humane behavior through providing rescue, rehabilitation, and safe zone to abandoned, neglected, and abused animals.
In order for a nonprofit organization to obtain funds they must show evidence. For APCH this is not an issue, in fact, this organization happens to shared data of all their accomplishments, youth outcomes, tutoring, volunteers, clients who have enter college, yearly hours of youth counseling, tuition for school, expenses of activities, school supply, field trips, donations and expenses for educational courses (Things We Measure, n. .d).The only challenge APCH may have as stated above is their 75% spending normally it has to be at 60%. This can lead them to not have enough assets for other areas in their programs.
When I graduate from Texas Southern University with my Master’s degree, I plan on starting a non-profit organization. When it comes down to creating my organization, I will use statistic for a lot of information. I will use statistic when discovering the average income of the area I am choosing to locate for my organization. As well as the average crime rate, the dropout rate of urban youths, unemployment rates, average age of gang members in the area, and the success rate of other organization in the area I choose as well. Each set of number would be very important to the success of my organization and I will need to make sure the numbers are properly found. Also the numbers are true to the census.
H1: Non-profits that increase the amount of contact with stakeholders through the use of marketing exhibit a higher response rate to donation requests than through the use of conventional marketing techniques.
In a recent article, (link to the nonprofits are like VCs blog on .vc), how charities are using their investment portfolios is changing, but many nonprofits are still behind on how to raise money for their foundations. Working on an archaic system of donations, fundraisers, mailers, etc; grassroots nonprofits have typically had a hard time coming into the tech age, and using it to their advantage.
Any facility or organization needs to have a structure in order to function effectively. I found two nonprofit hospitals just an hour apart from each other. The first hospital is Brattleboro Memorial Hospital (BMH) a 61-bed not-for-profit community hospital located in southeastern Vermont with a mission to provide community-based quality health services delivered with compassion and respect (BMH, n.d., para. 1-2). I have not found an organizational chart in their website, however, BMH is governed by bylaws and a volunteer board of directors in which according to Yoder-Wise (2015) coincides with the definition for private non-profit organizations. That said, the board of directors provides their expertise to make decisions on the overall governance
There are tons of non-profit organizations that have made tremendous changes in our world but are these organizations providing the essentials people need? The Human Rights Watch Organization is a coordination that was made to make the international world a more efficient place it was created by Helsinki Watch to help defend and protect human rights as well as give voice to the oppressed and hold oppressors accountable for their crimes. According to their website (hrw.org) this organization has helped strengthened the rights of children, women, refugees and migrant workers as well as bring up topics such as domestic violence, rape, war crime and many more to help people know more about what rights they attain. It is wise to contribute time or money to this nonprofit organization because as a human being that loves freedom and equality this organization provides the essentials needed to help people attain their rights internationally and it’s great that it was developed by people who voluntarily signed up to help achieve change for
Over the past few years, there have been several developments regarding the financial implications of the nonprofit sector. Based on Kucinich (2012), one of those implications was a proposal in the 2012 presidential election by Republican candidate Mitt Romney that would have either eliminated or posed serious limitations to the charitable tax-deduction, and President Obama responded to the policy idea with, “if you eliminated charitable deductions, that means every hospital and university and not-for-profit agency across the country would suddenly find themselves on the verge of collapse. So that’s not a realistic option” (p. 1). Why exactly is there a political push to eliminate the charitable tax-deduction? Don’t nonprofits provide
One of the prominent features of the US healthcare is that nonprofit and for-profit organizations work together in delivering quality healthcare. The form of business has consequences that may be positive or negative. The non-profit organization enjoys more priorities than for profit organization when it comes to co-operating tax. Furthermore, these organizations are formed for limited purposes. The main reason why an organization will be termed as not for profit firm is when it undertakes the role of charity, benevolent, scientific, educational or religious functions (Rosenau and Linder, 2013). The repercussion for not for profit organization is the limited purpose of any generated income. Employees in such

In “Evidence from the National Assessment of the Social Innovation Fund (SIF)”, Zhang, Griffith, Pershing, Sun, Malakoff, Marsland, Peters, and Field (2017) empathize that SIF is a most lucrative and much-needed non-profit organization to support community and society in terms of youth development, job creation, and better futures. In order to execute its plans effectively, SIC collaborates and partners with other organizations to raise funds, and human resources to improve organizational capacity to create a solid fundamental strength. One of the most difficult challenges that SIC has to deal with is the financial obstacle during the economic recessions. Zhang et. al (2017) insist that in the 2008 and 2012,
